It didn’t do Baines or McManaman any harm and by all accounts some of these young un’s could be better

Leighton Baines was playing in a side that was winning every week and he had an easy job.

Let’s just say for example that Gelhardt is put on the bench next week. A goal down we throw him on. Now it could be the making of him and he bags a brace and never looks back. Or he could miss a chance, get bullied by a lump of a defender and have a stinker. I can guarantee you that if he was to miss a chance to get a point or a winner that the fans would turn on him in seconds. Similarly, if we played the kids and lost they would berate Cook for playing the kids. It’s a Wigan thing. Happens at the rugby as well.

Cook is trying to protect these players by not throwing them into the fire. If/when we are safe he will blood them or he will blood them in nothing cup games be that the league cup or the JPT if we do go down. If Gelhardt is seen as being ready then he will probably go out on loan to get that experience of being around the first teams etc and playing every week like Callum Lang currently is.

BTW, for anyone at the fans forum or who bothered to listen to it as opposed to just ranting about this that and the other, Cook said that the young lads train with and play against the first team each and every week so they will be around these experienced lads they can learn from. Similarly Cook will see whether they have the ability to step up. Gelhardt (sorry to keep picking on him) could for example get bullied by Chey Dunkley each and every game/session which indicates he isn’t ready for the level we are at.[/quote]

Your wrong m8 totally wrong, I don’t know what fans your on about. That might be what you would do but certainly not me and plenty more.

And drawing a comparison with us and the rugby fans ?? FFS give Latics fans a brake will ya.

I pretty confident that the vast majority of Latics fans (you always get the 1 dickbox) wouldn’t turn on a young red necked kid who’s come through the ranks and puts a latics shirt for the 1st time then misses a chance. That’s a feeble attempt for a reason not to play any youth lads try again.

Let’s see how long Cook last next season when he keeps knocking on the door of the “Bank of IEC” for a player to sign another over 30 player if you haven’t noticed we’ve fook all to sell.

And the Baines ?, I nearly flooded my skids in laughter. Baines was young and wasn’t ready so when he came into the side he had to play his balls off and learn very quickly and regular got it wrong
the same goes for MacManaman and yes they both had 7 shades kicked out the both of them while they were learning thier trades. Ask any player they’ll tell you the same, there’s never a right time to turf them in , it’s a fookin gamble.

Baines and MacManaman wouldn’t have gone on to bigger and better things if they hadn’t of been lobbed in the deep end with no float.

Baines and MacManaman was bullied like fcuk and lumps kicked out of them you know or do you not remember ? and, I don’t remember hails of rugby type boo’s.

Exactly. Baines made mistakes but in a team that was winning and full of quality. Make a mistake in a team losing and not actally that good and you get found out as there is nobody to sweep up his mess.

If you think Wigan fans be them football or rugby dont complain then you dont hang around the dw much

Back to the game. I appreciate our predicament but these negative tactics that Cook has adopted of late in order to grind out the odd point here and there are soul destroying to the paying punter. Now those dull tactics may very well keep us up ( Just ) but what of next season? Because Cook will have done what was asked of him and kept us up this season, who’s to say that those mind numbing tactics won’t be applied again!
Comparing our squad to some of the teams above us I see us as having a better overall squad than quite a few of them. Take Preston for instance. More or less safe now with a squad that is nowhere near as good as ours but they seem to have a go at teams ( Remember our little trip to Deepdale! ) and have some great results under their belt this season. Yes they have had some bad results and their league position reflects that but they are pretty much safe and some might say have a long shot at a play off place! What are they doing with an inferior squad to us that we aren’t? Can you see us battering the top of the league like they did the other night!

Are you deaf or daft INJURIES!

Are you daft the Knobbers lost far more of their main players than we did through injury but despite playing the same formation that we do actually play to win. Good post Filmoss.

Well I know one or two of their fans but Chorley isn’t Preston. You should know that being a Merseyside lad.

No we don’t play to lose but it’s looking more and more like we are playing for a point or sit back and play for a point when we could play to win.

We definitely play to win, as we did on Wednesday against Stoke.

We just didnt quite have the guile and cunning to create that final power play in the endzone.

But look at it like this. We faced a team, or the majority of a team, that were two levels above us last season, and we kept a clean sheet and held our own. That has to be taken as a positive.

I can’t comment about the Stoke game as I couldn’t go unfortunately because of a family friend illness. Thing is Vat yes I understand your positive but there is a massive resemblance of how Yootha sat back and was happy with a point.

I wouldnt exactly say we sit back, although I’m not sure what we’ve done in away games as I’ve not been.

I think we lack that creativity at times, especially as we’ve missed Nick Powell, and until recently, Jacobs and Massey. I like how Morsy drives forward though.

Donny, we played nowt like the Joyce era. Joyce was undoubtedly the worst Manager at the Latics in my lifetime (and you know how long that is). We defended well but the midfield failed to give Josh & Leon good service. They were both chasing lost causes (aka the Will Grigg era). Midfield is the second line of defence, but has also to be the engine room & creator; and that’s where we are stumbling at the moment. Would have been better with Reece at right back and Evans or Powell in midfield. On the positive side, we have taken 4 point off joke city !

At one time we used to bring games forward against other teams not in the cup.
Nowadays we jet the whole caboodle off to Dubai.
                        Skint my arse.

Chill Fella, we are playing a big Chinese team on Saturday and they have probably sponsored our short trip to Dubai. See the positive side; or would you rather we be training on the mud flats at Runcorn ?

I also follow Red Star Belgrade (Crvena Zvezda) and they themselves have just had a warm weather training break in Antalya, Turkey. As Belgrade had 3 or 4 weeks where it was under a few feet of snow, they had to get away to train and played a couple of other teams in friendlies who had done likewise.

No problems with the boys jetting off to Dubai. I believe the training facilities are spot on, and of course they will have good weather. Wonder if theyre staying at the Palm Atlantis? Each room has a huge fishtank as a wall, its five star all the way.
