The French are quietly going about their business and are my tip to do well.

Argentina next for them though mutt so one of the big boys are going out. They have been lucky up to now and it would be just like the Argies to turn up after struggling to get through the group stages.[/quote]

They weren’t lucky today – they played very well. I wouldn’t fancy Portugal or Uruguay to beat them either.[/quote mutty your like a rat feeding on people’s miss fortune s your a horrible kind of klumps supporter..

I have to agree mutt they were good today incredible pace did for Argentina. Taking nowt away from the kermits mutt but have you ever seen a team so divided between players and manager as the Argies?. Messi looked absolutely fed up and wtf was that all about leaving Aguero on the bench and playing a false 9. As much as I dislike the French I would rather them win it than the Brazilians who since their fabulous winning side of 70 have been the media darlings who football cannot manage without and are the favourites every world cup despite never coming near to the great side that triumphed back then.

Thanks for your contribution to the thread. Your grammar is appalling though.

Now, back to Nuneaton’s more relevant (and adult) point. The Argies are a divided lot. Messi hasn’t got his Barcelona team-mates with him to set him up for hat tricks against crap opposition, and neither has Aguero. They are a poor side with a couple of massive egos who cant accept that by virtue of the place and time of their birth they are forced to play amongst players who they consider inferior. It doesn’t help having that fat coke-head watching their every move either.

The best team rarely wins the world cup. If it were on performances alone, then possibly Croatia should win it, but Brazil really need to up their game if they want to be 6 time winners. Its a very open competition, and in terms of pure entertainment, arguably the best I recall watching

Would you explain please, given that the purpose of championships is to determine who is the best at the time? You may argue that England weren’t the best in ’66, but they beat both Portugal and West Germany in the knock-out rounds. Similarly the Netherlands, Cruyff et al., couldn’t beat the Germans in ’74. Being the best is about winning, not how nice you play. You sound like Wenger.

Enlighten us please Rugby mon on how the winners are rarely the best team please. Is it because of the format of the world cup?
Should the African and Asian sides not be in the finals to make way for Italy and Holland etc?
Or is it because of the group system and way countries progress from two sides rather than a knockout? Not sure what you mean.

Does the best team in England win the FA Cup or the League cup every year?

Technically (in terms of league placings), Latics were the best team to enter the FLT last season, but did they win it?

Once the WC knockout stages come up, it becomes less down to ability and more down to nerve and a bit of luck – be it a deflection, refereeing decision or moment of pure individual brilliance. Other than their first game and the semi final, Germany didn’t set the world alight in 2014, drawing with Ghana, scraping past USA (1-0), needing extra time to beat Algeria, 1-0 against France, but they did just enough each time.

Thus far, the best team I have seen is Croatia, but I don’t think they’ll win it.

For obvious practical and logistical reasons the World Cup is flawed, as is the case in all knock-out competitions, in that not all teams play each other. But that’s the beauty of a knock-out competition and what makes it exciting and interesting. I for one wouldn’t have it any other way.

Having said that I’m with Jimmy Sirrel (look him up) when he said, “the best team always wins, the rest is only gossip.

Would you say that of Russia today Sam?
Spain passed the ball over 1,000 times and dominated with 79% of possession. Yet with all those passes and possession could only muster up 9 shots on target.
Were Russia the better side for getting the result and holding in or Spain for their fancy passing game?
At least their players can join the Argentinians, Portuguese and German players on their yachts now. Bye bye Spain.

Yes, because they played to the best of their abilities and held Spain to a draw. They were then the best team in the penalty shoot-out.

Does the best team in England win the FA Cup or the League cup every year?

Well, the best one certainly won the FA Cup in 2013! However, the comment was ‘The best team rarely wins the world cup.’

So, do we award the World Cup on the decision of a Mutty, a committee or some such?

I’m also with Jimmy Sirrel and Sammy, “the best team always wins, the rest is only gossip.’and that also makes Russia the better team because they won the game.

Just a thought but perhaps we shouldn’t allow ‘little’ or ‘worse’ clubs to be promoted to the Premier League and just allow the ‘bigger or ‘better’’ clubs, then Sunderland may have a chance.

Bar a miracle Sunderland will be the best team in League one.

Should Spain have had a penalty which VAR denied, Russia had a brilliant game plan and it worked superbly. Thought De Gea didn’t cover himself in glory in shoot out. Did the best team win, no but the best tactics did.

Opinions on who is the best team can be made on varying criteria and who’s to say which is correct. It is also markedly subjective.

Considering de Gea is regarded as one of the best ‘keepers in the world he’s been a massive disappointment in this World Cup. He got nowhere near any of those penalties with two of them going straight down the middle.
And Neuer hasn’t been much better either.

I get what mutty is saying and its true of any knock out comp. 1 bad day and you’re gone but as I always say about the rugby league format; you knew the rules at the kick off.

Been a much better World Cup this than it looked on paper thanks to some shock results.
