Yes I saw that tactic used against Everton, also from the East Stand, and I seem to remember it resulted in Moyes replacing the hapless Heitinga at half time.
The fact that you and I remember this does kind of prove the point. It’s so unusual.
Did you see it yesterday? I didn’t. Or against the Baggies last week.
Kone can’t score without the ball and he rarely gets it. Our periods of possession very often fail to produce a goal scoring opportunity. Be tight in defence of course, but when you get the ball make sure you use it, don’t just keep it. We need to be more adventurous, play the percentage game a bit more, put crosses in earlier rather than wait, lose the chance and play it back across the box. Get the ball in to the box and run on to it. And the home games against Reading and QPR are the times to do this.
Similar versus Stoke also – Di Santo down the line (West Stand side) to Kone, to penalty-area, across to incoming Di Santo. 2-1 (again).
Those examples I remember well because they resulted in an end product. Not every such instance results in a goal (unfortunately).
As for Reading and QPR.. both tough games. The latter will most probably be more difficult of the two – QPR players fired up, possibly playing for a new Manager !
Squeaky bum time for Hughes, next 3:
M Utd (A) lose
Villa (H) lose and Hughes out …
Wigan (A)Will Fernandez entrust more funds in Jan. transfer window to Hughes, or get shut of before and give ‘Arry, ain’t no feckin wheeler and dealer’, the chance to do exactly that, to save the mighty Rangers ???
‘Stick or twist’ time imminent (Fernandez).
Worst fears confirmed ! :cheer: (Hughes out) :( (QPR resurgence)
No predictions for tomorrow – just hope
(i) we secure a much-needed 3 pts.
(ii) JR isn’t up to his usual mischief !ZYeh right none of you lot will be there tomorrow will you to support our team set of bullshiters the lot of you who take delight in mocking the true fans like me great to be a big hitter on here yes but don’t really support the team good luck hope you enjoy reading at home
Seriously, whoever you are (like we don’t know), give it a rest. Tedious in the extreme and you are starting to make a proper tit of yourself. Nobody is really biting and it’s not remotely funny.
Personally, 3-4-1-2 as follows :
Al-Habsi
Boyce – Atherton – De Zeeuw
Valencia – McCarthy – Palacios – N’Zogbia
Liddell
Kone – Ellington
Subs
Filan – McCulloch – Roberts – De Vos – Bullard

Kone is quick, he’s also strong, and most importantly talented. How often is the ball played in front of him, perhaps beyond the defenders, for him to use that pace, strength and skill running towards goal?
On the rare occaisions he does get the ball it’s with his back to goal, a defender on his shoulder and another waiting to sweep up if he turns. Most likely though he’s a spectator, in the box, watching his teamates slowly move the ball upfield, passing it across the 18 yard line, out to Boyce then back to Mac, out to Beausejour then back to Maloney, finally back to Caldwell and Ramis, then start again.
Kone would be a good signing if he ever got the ball.
Think you’ll find the tactic is deployed from time to time.
The thought of Caldwell playing a diagonal ball 30-40 yards upfield out to the wing would have been unheard of last year; that he does so now is no doubt down to ability to ‘mix it up’ and use one of Kone’s strengths; namely, his pace /the ability to come out on top in 1-2-1s.
An Eaststander, seen that deployed several times this year – one example being the Everton game (play back please), Caldwell cross-field ball out to Kone (HW-line, right wing), leaves Hettinga for dead, down to by-line, coolness personified, incisive pass into Di Santo …and 2-1.
A little route-one (for Wigan). Good switch of tactics ..mixing it up a bit. Putting doubt into the opposition’s mind (play short v go long ?). Can’t rely on the same old ploy all the time, can we ?!
Incredible 4th, 2nd and 3rd weren’t too shabby either.
Mind you, …Joe Hart… has been found out on several occasions this season, needs to get back to his form of old
Poland, Sweden (England), Real Madrid, Ajax, Other (City) …
Wrapped up in his own importance, been reading the papers too much ???
Long live Ali A-H (excused the blip at Manure)!
We have a team :
Norman Conquest (Australian goalie – apparently)
BACK THREE
Fish – Costa – Fortune
MID-THREE
Black – Fucks – White
FRONT THREE
‘Shagger’ – ‘Shite’ – Kuntz
ON HIS OWN
Arse Bandeet :woohoo:
Winston White (ex-Latics)
PS. not intended to be racist (just ‘amusing’)
Surely you are wise enough to understand that Dave opinion of the next level will be done in a financial scale that will not put the clubs finances in jeopardy ,We all know that as wealthy as DW is he his out of his league when even coming up against clubs owners such as Reading and QPR ,Southampton even. The next level may or may not be achieved if it is it will be done within the financial capabilities of the club ,without putting the club in financial risk
Staying in the PREM’ this year is massive, given the stupid numbers being paid effective next year for TV rights.
Implementation of a salary cap discipline (being discussed) will help, to ensure greater available funding for transfers.
As will good form, a decent TOP 10/12 finish and a few extra on a Saturday. If only ….(more bums on seats, DW)
Stoke (b’ awful football), haven’t done too badly at all since they came up. Not in the same league as QPR money-wise, but the Britannia packed put every week (and they’ve splashed the cash a little)
If Abby Clancy is willing to go to the Potteries, then there’s gotta be hope for LATICS !
Kone @ £2.7M – you don’t always need to spend the money (granted you’ve got to be good to be in the right place, at the right time …)
Have people not realised we stand to lose Kone to the African Nations cup in January/February? I am almost sure he will go with Ivory Coast.
Just thought I’d mention it, as I reckon we will be knackered without him, unless we spend some money on a replacement, as Di Shito isn’t good enough, and Boselli is even worse than that.
I’d test the water with a bid for Charlie Austin from Burnley. His contract is running out, so might be able to do a deal. He’s already scored 21 goals.
Yes, in the Championship. Remember Marlon King, Jason Scotland, & Jason Koumas!
Rickie Lambert seems to be doing ok considering ! Moses made a decent transition as well in my opinion !
Moses got (was getting) there in the end …. incl. consistency
If it’s immediate impact we’re after (e.g. Kone, 4 in 11 (5, if credited with Swansea disallowed) plus min. 2 assists (Di Santo), is Charlie Austin the answer … ???
Bosselli, unfortunately, isn’t either
TTF we got Kone (for now that is …) !
Beausejour………
Shite. Never beats his man….CAN’T beat his man. Probably because he’s so wide and would need a sat nav to find a way past an opponent. The fattest wide player I’ve ever seen.
We sold Moses who had the ability to beat people, and now rely on this rotund excuse of a player. We’ve nobody really capable of skinning an opponent and getting a ball over. The nearest we have is Stam, and he seems to have to bust a gut to do it.
But as for Beausejour……no, I’m not a fan. Not Premiership class.
Moses and Beausejour and not like for like. Beausejour is used as a wing-back, Moses as a forward.
You couldn’t swap Moses for Beausejour as Moses wouldn’t do his bit in defence.
I also see a couple of posts saying Miyachi should be given a run on the right: he’s not a wing-back either. From what I gather (as I’ve not see that much of him) he’s an attacking midfielder, so you’d be looking at dropping one of the front three to make space for him.
Agreed
I’ve actually been agreeing with quite a few of your posts recently.I think we’ve turned a corner!
You can’t keep a good man down, class always shines through in the end
(joke) B)
Onwards and upwards !
Beausejour………

Kone /ANC
Yes, most have realised; subject previously covered (CL)
For your information, likely to miss Stoke, Soton, Sun’land and Chelski.
Di Santo
I think you’ll find if you look at his goal-scoring record over the last 20 games (plus assists)…not too bad. A much improved player (even if he heard a poor game, Saturday).
Charlie Austin
Arsenal reported to be looking at him
Though Watson faded badly, started brightly but he slows play down too much when sometimes we need a quick counter attack. Never rated Di Santo, his scoring record doesn’t justify his want for an improved contract and having got Kone ( who was great again today ) for 4 mill, we should sell as he was dreadful again today. Stam was great when he came on, would like to see Miyachi given a run on the right thoughWigan starplayer in Sunday newspaper, Watson 8 (Kone, 8 also).
Worst, Di Santo, 5Pretty much as I said above.
Watson didn’t just pass the ball yesterday, several occasions spring to mind, where he also took on and beat a couple of WBA players, took decent set-pieces (Watson ?, I hear myself say ?), had attempts on goal
Credit where due, yesterday he was good; particularly, when considered the fact that he hasn’t been a regular, he turned up /took his chance. If he did tail off, then that’s understandable (match fitness, he was knackered).
Hopefully, just a bad day at the office for Di Santo (thoughts on playing for country, Wednesday; or injury ?) Didn’t look at it, but as been very good of late (he, and Kone)
Don’t understand for the life of me, when we always persist with the same free-kick routine (Maloney, again yesterday…1st half, came to nowt).
FFS,try Figueroa (have some variety) – it would be interesting to say how willing the wall would be to stand up to his power. Once bitten, twice shy … !
Surprised nobody has mentioned how poor and out of shape Jean Beausejour looked ! Why he wasn’t substituted is a mystery to me ! As for Watson, a game of two halves in my opinion for him. His misplaced passes in the second half far outnumbered his completed passes from the first half. Stam was brilliant when he came on and must surely start next week.I would move everyone in the back line along one to accomodate him and drop the ineffective Beausejour.Phil,
For once, I will disagree with you.
In relative terms, Watson was bloody good – moved the ball well, and some incisive passes, even a couple of attempts on goal.
Not saying JB is an athlete but he is one of the best in the team to pick out the pass (cross)… he did again today. Put who you like in his place (Jones, Figs, etc.), no one will have the quality to deliver as he does. Perhaps he should a bit more for the team…that’s another issue.
Has to start for me (fits our style of play).
Stam – played well when he came on.
Boyce – as previously remarked looking a little sluggish.
Ramis – one or two suicidal short balls to team mates today; looked lost lost when Caldwell came off (one on one with Lukaku, if I remember well)
