I know at least 6-7 Everton fans from Wigan who regularly attend matches at Goodison and a lot of aways as well. They all sound like Wiganers but their families are all scousers. No problem with that at all. Worst ones are the Wiganers who support other clubs who have no justification at all for supporting them apart from chasing glory. Can’t understand it miself.

        Anyway, some threads need curtailing.

Double bulk with the hook in the loop method fished dead depth certainly sorts those Crucians out. Although seeing the shy bites has more to do with the double bulk and fishing dead depth than the hook in the loop, obviously ;)

Really? Forbes have him listed as having $470 million, doesn’t read much like a telephone number to me. Did you mean area code or are Forbes wrong?

I really don’t think it is an insipid brand of football though. I quite like what he is trying to do but for some reason (and this does come down to Roberto) things just don’t seem to be clicking. The concept is great but the reality is somewhat lacking. I just really hope that he somehow makes them click in the next few games and things start happening for us. Very frustrating to watch at times but if everything clicks into place it’ll be worth the frustration to have a club playing a brand of football that is not easy to achieve.

Fair play if you’d prefer someone else at the helm, that’s your opinion. I, personally, would rather struggle with someone who cares and who has a genuine passion for the club than be a “little” bit better with some long ball merchant who has our players kicking people off the park. Suppose it comes down to what you want out of supporting a football club. To me, Roberto is one of us and I will support him as such. I won’t have blind faith in him because, as stated earlier he has made a lot of mistakes, but I will give him a fair crack of the whip to get things right. He’s kept us up for 2 seasons with a dwindling budget so can’t be doing that badly, can he?

I’ve often pondered what supporting a club is and I still haven’t worked it out. It can’t be the players because they come and go. It can’t be anything to do with the stadium because that has changed and I’m still here. It’s definitely not the chairman. I don’t really care for the business side of it so it leaves me with just the memories of being taken by my Dad and the rapport with other supporters that has been built up with attending games. I guess, in that sense, I see Roberto as a fan and that is the reason I would like to see him succeed and am willing to give him more time.

It doesn’t really matter if we go down because it’ll still be my club and I can never change that. In it for good and bad no matter what. We have been spoiled in a way for the last few years but look back to where we came from, and where we might be heading again, it wasn’t that bad, was it?

            Totally off topic now!

The players coming in look a lot lighter on the wage bill ;)

Also, I can only count about 5 of the players who left who are still playing at the highest level. Reckon quite a few of them are drawing their pension by now. Can’t imagine why he would have got rid of those.

I think those lists highlight perfectly why we are struggling now. It’s worth bearing in mind how we are on much more of a stable financial footing than we were.

If we had carried on going down the same road that we were a few years ago then, chances are, without very big cash handouts from someone (you know, Mr Tight ;) ) we would be struggling for our very existence at the moment, let alone struggling to stay up. When you look at it like that then getting relegated but having a sustainable club to enjoy in the future doesn’t seem so bad.

I’m not saying that Martinez is not making lots of mistakes, he quite clearly is, but it is not an easy job to manage Wigan. Do I think he could do better? Absolutely! But for now I think better the devil we know, who we know has the clubs best interests at heart, than employing someone who is only out for heightening their own reputation at the cost of the clubs finances. That’s if they’d even come

Take your pick people because you can’t have it both ways. Well you can but it’ll be more by good luck than it will good management. That’s unless we could get Wenger or Ferguson to come and do a shift for us!

No, you are being a silly billy.

As long as you have a coherrent argument to back your fantasies up then that’s fine. How exactly do you expect us to be doing anything other than struggling then?

Lowest gates in the Premiership, lowest income in the Premiership, highest wages as a percentage of turnover in the Premiership, debt ridden (albeit mostly to Dave Whelan with no security on his loans), no new potential investors because we are an awful business prospect for anyone and to top it all off we have some of the most deluded fans with unrealistic aspirations in the league as well!

It’s all very well having aspirations but they have to be realistic. I aspire to be an amozonian goddess with thighs that could open a walnut but my problem is I have testicles. It’s an aspiration but without loads of money I ain’t going to get there….similar to the football club really ;) Any donations greatly appreciated.

Note: The amazonian bit might be a lie and any donations received may well be spent in the pub and not necessarily getting rid of my widgie!

Regressing is a good word for what’s happening at the club at the moment.
The fortunate thing is that our debt, wage bill and costs are also doing the same.

Unfortunately, so are our gates and income………..

I’m sure Dave Whelan did have a dream but I’m also pretty sure a dream is all it was, and ever will be. Anyone who realistically expects anything other than a struggle for us every season needs to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror. Ironic that those same people seem to enjoy United fans or Chelsea fans moaning and usually come out with some smart arse comment like “What have they got to moan about? They’d be alreet being us!” We are “us”. And in the context of football, and Wigan Athletic Football Club inparticular, that “us” means punching above our weight and being perennial strugglers.

                  Get used to it.

I’d, at a guess, say that his future intentions towards us was to get back the money that he had given to us out of his personal fortune and make us a self-sustainable club. That’s not a bad thing is it?

I don’t think the sun shines out of his arse either but to be moaning when were only signing Honduras internationals and top scorers from the Championship is a bit rich from WAFC fans in my view.

The biggest mistakes DW has made is to spout off utter tripe about this that and the other and raise expectations when in reality they shouldn’t be raised!

                        Reember where we came from.

What does the gate money, shirt sales etc etc blah blah blah.

It is part of the clubs turnover. You know, the turnover of which 89% is spent on wages

Garswood, facts are not the done thing on here.

See a big number (lets say 43m for example ;) ) and then proclaim “Well there’s no way we could have spent that, Whelan must be creaming it in”.

Do it without engaging brain, without looking for references to back up your silly claims and most definitely with no consideration for what our true level would be without the investment from DW.

Personally, i’m not bothered what level we are playing at but I am bothered that there should always be a Wigan Athletic. The club is now being run as a business instead of a rich mans plaything. As far as i’m concerned this is a positive step as it means the future of the club after Whelan has gone will be secured as long as we continue to live within our means.

Everything isn’t rosy but by no means is it tragic. I wonder if the moaners will still be around when we find our natural level within the game based on turnover etc and not from being bankrolled.

So you expect him to subsidise the club and then give you answers as to what’s going on whilst he’s risked millions on us and you’ve bought a couple of season tickets?

Only in a football fan could someone be so irrational

Stop thinking we are some big time club, we aren’t. We have a very low income compared to many of the clubs out there and we simply can’t afford to compete with some of the bigger clubs.

We would be very lucky if we are debt free by the end of the season so I ask you “where are the funds coming from?”. If, however, we were debt free then I guess that shows what a good business head Whelan has on him.

If you are expecting Whelan to subbie us from his own pockets then why should he? His comments about being a self sustaining club were (I don’t like saying this) spot on. If a business is not capable of looking after itself without some millionaire benefactor constantly bailing them out then they are not a viable business and will be shut down. Is that what you want?

He’s trying to find a solution for us to remain at this level and be viable. If it doesn’t work then don’t moan because without him our natural level would be 2nd, 3rd, conference.

Punching above our weight, getting some big time charlie scalps along the way and pissing sky sports and other broadcasters off is enough for now.

The reality is we will end up in the lower divisions again soon enough so just enjoy it whilst you’re here.
