There’s a difference between playing a winger and playing somebody on the wing.

Maloney started on the right, but he isn’t a winger. Beausejour started on the left. He played last season as a wing back and I wouldn’t expect him to take his man on like a traditional winger.

McManaman, who does play like an old-fashioned winger, replaced Beausejour. He played on the right and Maloney switched to the left.

In the Championship, I’d like to see two forwards – Holt and Fortune, say – with Maloney behind them. Alternatively, we could have Holt and Maloney in the centre and McManaman on the wing.

With our squad, we could field any number of other formations too. But perhaps we’ll be more cautious on Sunday – any forecasts of how we will play?

You can have a drink on a plane, can’t you?

I expect the team will fly. We could charter a plane too!

Yes – we could have had an interfering owner like Suleiman Kerimov.

A new manager should be given a chance to settle in.

Martinez played a back three last season, with Beausejour and Boyce as wing backs. Beausejour built up a good understanding on the left with Maloney. Their neat passing often put Beausejour through to the goal line inside the opposing full back.

I expect that we will revert to a more conventional back four this season under Coyle. Boyce may drop back to full back. Maloney is naturally an inside forward. He can support the centre forward or play in midfield. He can play on either the left or the right, but isn’t fond of playing on the wing.

Coyle is spoiled for choice – at the moment – in midfield. On Saturday he played Watson, McCarthy, McArthur and Beausejour. He could also bring in McManaman, Espinoza or McCann and now perhaps McClean too. McManaman can play on the left or right, while McClean appears to be solely left footed, and plays on the left.

I think we can afford to play a specialist winger in the Championship and I expect McManaman to challenge for a regular place this season. I can’t think that McClean has dropped down to the Championship to act as cover to McManaman. And I still can’t see them playing in the same team.

I am watching the situation with interest.

It’s hard to see McManaman and McClean playing in the same team. And we played at Barnsley without a winger.

A puzzling purchase, unless something more is planned.

Awreet Barnsley; we have nothing to fear or loose next week. It’s a day out that players, fans and manager can treat as a bonus and enjoy ! Not so Moyes !

Wigan will not treat their appearance in the Community Shield against Manchester United as simply a day out at Wembley, says striker Grant Holt.

I’m not too concerned about the result. But I don’t want the game to upset our plans for promotion.

However, Wigan do have a chance of winning the FA Cup, the Community Shield and then the Championship Trophy. That would be a stunning achievement!

He scored a great goal at Fulham!

Perch could be considered the dirtiest Premier League player last season (202 minutes/card), with Caldwell on 261 minutes/card.

Barnett has a shocking disciplinary record too. With Rogne and Caldwell both liable to injury, we could have trouble with our centre halves again this season.

In addition, Holt committed more fouls than any other Premier League player last season!

How I see the transfers – but no great disagreement with Salford!

Robles – loan ended; Nicholls returned from loan, Carson in

(I don’t know how they will accommodate Al Habsi and Pollitt too.)

Figeuroa and Stam out; Crainey and his international replacement Garcia in

Alcaraz Scharner Golobart and Lopez out; Perch, Barnett and Rogne in

David Jones out; Chris Mccann in

Di Santo and Crusat out; Fortune in, Dicko returned from loan

    Kone out; Holt in

I’d say the squad is a similar size but probably has a lower wage bill.

Coyle had to act quickly to find suitable replacements throughout the team and, to his credit, he did. The purchases he made before the season began are likely to be just as significant as the tactics he employs during it.

It was the failure to replace senior players – plus injuries – at Bolton that led to their relegation. The fault was not necessarily Coyle’s – there may well have been financial limitations that we are not aware of. (And I see that Holden is injured yet again.)

We have got off to a great start – I just hope that next week doesn’t damage our confidence. I am now anxiously waiting for the transfer window to close – and there are four more long weeks to go! But if any one of the big moves goes through, then it will start a chain reaction that we may get caught up in.

Aye, but did you actually go to the game ? With your username, you should have been first in the queue !

You’re quite right – I should have gone. But I am going to Wembley – yet again!

I’m hoping to enjoy a more relaxed season this year. I’ve got my season ticket, but I’m not determined to see every game. I will be willing to miss a match if something else comes up. And I’m usually busy on a Thursday night, so I may not be able to get to the European games, which would be a blow.

However, if Wigan are top of the table and in a challenge with their Lancashire rivals, everything could change. I’d be happy with a another trip to Wembley at the end of the season, though that would add three more games to a ridiculously busy season already. On reflection, it might be better to go up direct!

Another noticeable point – we had 63% of possession.

We were playing against Barnsley, who finished just one point above relegated Peterborough last season.

We started last season with a game against Chelsea, who had just become Champions of Europe.

We don’t move in the same circle any more, and the demands upon the team are hardly the same. Congratulations on a good win all the same.

I shall be happy if Holt scores 25 lucky goals!

What we’ve been missing is sufficient players up the field to create chances and players in the box to convert them into goals.

We should be able to take greater control of games this season and have a greater presence in the box too. I think we’ve got the players to do both.

Looks like Holt will be the 1st choice striker…cant argue with 2 goals though.

Goals came from Watson, Holt, Barnett and Maloney.

Holt just got one lucky goal. “Fellow debutant Holt, a £2m summer signing from Norwich, opened his competitive account for the Latics in fortuitous fashion, deflecting in Boyce’s effort after Watson had put the visitors ahead.”

But he did last for 75 minutes.

Coyle, the new manager, has made a good start.

Six cup winners plus five useful purchases. Well done!
