Barca v Elche Thursday, Elche played 7-2-1 lost 5-0
Wolves interested in Delort, now wouldn’t that be funny if he paired up with Dicko and got a play-off place?.
I hope Delort does well for himself as he must be totally pissed off hereOh dear, don’t tell me you’ve reverted to idiot mode over Christmas, too! And you were doing so well lately! ;)
Give over you big girls blouse, the lad asked a simple question and The Egg is the only one who has managed a sensible reply. That’s all that was needed, unless cup winners wanted to open it up a bit more. It was you I was about to congratulate on behaving better over the past week or so, but leopard and spots and all that I suppose. ;)
And Standish, “a nice little earner” is a common and well used turn of phrase that befits his current position. The same cannot be said about the other players you mentioned as, in my opinion, they will return to first team football, however, I believe that Caldwell has had his playing days here at the club and will not return to first team football. I have no proof of that, I have not spoken to anyone close to the club, I have not received a postcard from DW with that Post Script on the bottom – it is just my analysis of observations made since the season began.
I accept your clarification, but I disagree.A ‘nice little earner’ is generally used to describe a lucrative venture of someone taking money from customers for a service or products.
So if he was charging people for coaching sessions then yes, but not if all he’s doing is fulfilling the part of his contract that he’s currently able to fulfil – ie. doing his job.
Caldwell was on the bench not so long ago – so I suspect he still has ambitions of playing.
Although if I’m wrong, surely all that’s happening is he’s being paid to be a coach rather than a plyer/coach?
correct , he ain’t playing and there’s no mention of him coming back in the near future. I bet there’s not many coaches on the money he’ll be drawing for training kids. If the injuries that bad that retire and concentrate on coaching. Not a bad earner that, training the kids while still drawing a hefty wedge
Why is it an earner?
He’s either fulfilling part of the coaching role that come with his player/coach contract, or he’s doing it free of charge off his own back.
Key word “part” I would say he’s a player over coach so my question was , is he playing or what ?Caldwell signed a one year contract with Wigan in July 2014. As part of the new agreement he was also given some coaching responsibilities.
July 2015 get rid time,
To be honest, I’d be surprised if you knew the finer details of the precise arrangement between the club and Caldwell. After all, you seem to know nothing about anything else.
Some young kid got his chance for Bolton and pissed all over us and not just with the goal. When all else fails you must give others a chance Delort, Reira , Flores, etc . And on the subject of bad trainers ? Shit trainers exist at every level of the game. You don’t have to be pro to hate training or never impress like forest gump ,,,,Jesus wept.
When something doesn’t work you have to explore every option at hand no matter if its outside your principles or are we still on the Martinez my way or the highway method ????
Who mentioned Forest Gump?
You don’t have to tear-arse around everywhere to impress in training. They have practice matches, different excercises. It’s not just about running around.
If you have two players of similar ability and one shows he’s willing to put the effort in during training and one can’t be arse – which one is goig to get picked?
There has to come to a point that you know no matter how you train or how many goals your score in the reserves you ain’t gonna get picked. With a striker , the proofs in the goals. It doesn’t matter about holding the bib in piggy in the middle or skipping through the ladders it’s about been in the right place at the right time and scoring.
I don’t know if he is any good but I know that when all my other options have been exhausted I would have at least tried him at least in the cup,,,,Bolton did.Training and playing in a competitive game are worlds apart, how many times do you hear a manager say ” He’s not match fit, he’s not ready he needs ** games under his belt”. He’s never been given a crack at the whip like Dicko who must have also not been ready or was also shit in training. He scored 18 goals in 35 appearances Jan-Jan 2014-2015

I suppose we all knew deep down that the “fall” was just round the corner after spending season after season just a budgies dick off going down. What got me the way the collapse snowballed and hasn’t stopped.
We’ll only clearout when we go down and players who are on good brass move on and younger hungrier players take their slots in the team. There’s is alot to be said about homegrown players the likes of Harry Kane it makes you proud as a fan. Lets give some of our own a sniff.
I still remember David Glenn (Glenny), he would play at home and be in Crofters before me !! his hair still wet ! be we were all proud that one of our own was playing.
If Whelan had of backed Bruce to the hilt we’d be with Pompey and Leeds. Our wage bill was through the roof when he left and it took 12 month of clearing out to put it back on track.
As for – the rise and fall of Wigan Athletic’ ? Shit, good, shit ,,,,,the end…….But as a whole I thought Saturdays performance was a marked improvement and both goal keepers stopped it from been a high scoring match.
Forshaw & Watson are too alike , macca coming on with 20 to go might have tipped it for us but Maloney (once on) with his direct running changed the game.
Would a Delort or Riera have changed the game ? Until our manager thinks outside the box we’ll never know. That’s what makes good managers, adapting ,motivating and risk taking. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it but if it’s smashed to shite you try everything within your powers to fix it you just don’t leave it and hope it self heals
I’m beginning to think it’s football politics and money that’s the reason why certain players aren’t getting a run out, it’s gotta be.

I’m not sure why some think it is so hard to assess a player’s quality in training rather than in a match environment. As far as I’m aware, they do play football in training (apart from when Coyle was here, of course, when it was table tennis). And in fact, those who suggest that some players are not “good trainers” may be missing the point that managers and coaches might just be able to spot that and don’t actually appreciate it.It might explain, for example, why James McClean, who I’d suggest would run himself into the ground when he’s in Asda might be preferred to someone like a Delort or a Riera who may be more of, shall we say, a lazy twat.
I use Riera/Delort merely as examples as I obviously don’t know the above to be true as I am not paid to be at the training ground day in day out to assess such things.
The manager has made it quite clear he doesn’t fancy certain players by omitting them from the team altogether. Have you ever played the game ? let me explain, some players hate training , period but on match day their a different animal. My son is coming up for 19 and plays at a decent amatuer level. He hates training and like a few others trains like a pig but on matchday he gets fired up and is a total different character, captains his side and regular M0TM awards and player of the season awards. If you gave out the same awards for training he’d get a polished turd.
Would you run your bollocks to the ground in training if you knew beforehand you would def not be playing no matter what you do ? it’s a vicious circle, it’s time to give others a run in the team, you never know. So he drops Delort, he plays in the reserves and scores and , yep , not even the bench. Do I know if he’s any good on a matchday ? no, and neither does MacKay because we both haven’t seen him but there’s not just Delort there’s a full second team not even getting a sniff.
As it stands at Wigan, players who are fancied by the way they “train” more professional whatever they are not getting the results, period. MacKay’s plan isn’t working with player selection so I say give the lads who don’t get a run a chance or what’s the point of a squad ?? we can’t be any poor than we are at the moment. If you don’t you will never know.
I would point to Riera more than Delort who has suffered the most. By all reports there are 3 La Liga teams after his services so they must know something MacKay doesn’t.
If we clearout the squad in Jan how long will it take for the new additions to bed in to the reserves cause that’s were their they’ll be heading….training ? were would Paul McGrath be without training….
So we base if the lad can score, been in the right place at the right time on dribbling round cones and 5 a sides oh, not forgetting piggy in the middle. If you based every player on the way they perform in training I could name 6-8 ex prem players who would have never got out of the Sunday leagues based on “training”.
There is no substitute for competitive football, Dicko proved that.
So Holt out , Delort not fancied, Riera on his way out on loan, it’s like were clearing out ready for the drop.
Based on training , pmsl, biggest load shit I’ve ever heard.
desperate times calls for desperate measures but 2nd from bottom isn’t desperate ? …still tickles me …training ffsWhen the manager can’t see it were fooked
