I think this is the answer:

May 1999, our final game was Vs Chesterfield at Springfield Park.
Latics win 3-1, courtesy of Liddell (2) and McGibbon.
And then, onto our final ever game at Springfield in the first round of the play-offs against Man City. Ends in a 1-1 draw with Stuart Barlow scoring for the Latics
Then we have the second leg at Maine Road and “the hand of Goater” finishes us off !
Just watched the You Tube clip and can’t believe how that tackle on Sharpie wasn’t awarded a penalty.
There was no “keep the ball” and bore the pants off everyone in this game; by either side.

However, do you remember this one
Play-offs were introduced in the 86/87 season.
    Our Manager was Ray Mathias.
Our last game was Vs Brentford at Griffin Park.
We win 3-2 to sneek into the play-offs, courtesy of Lowe, Cribley and Knowles.
Then we flunk the two legged round against Swindon.
I think we were two up home and it ended 3-2 to Swindon. Absolute shock of a game.
Then we could only manage 0-0 away, and Swindon go onto promotion in the final.

Roller coaster stuff from the Latics.

    Good point, Bullitt !

Ah, remember it well and still got the Season Highlights DVDs !!!
Don’t think I’ll be adding to the DVD collection this year, if they dare to produce one.
Anyway, good times are just around the corner.

As I posted some weeks ago.
I recall an early season interview with SM; probably after the good start against Derby & Bolton.
He said the first objective was to overcome the 8 point deduction and to reach mid table safety. When asked “what then ?” the response was “let’s just see how far we can take it”. So I don’t agree that the only thing in his mind was survival.
Maybe, Danson has told him to take the foot of the gas because he wants a progressive financial curve and not a vertical take off !

After the Bolton game at Horwich, I wandered home in the sunshine thinking that if we keep up that type of performance we can easily reach the play offs. One swallow did make summer, because I can’t really think of any other memorable performance this season.

Okay, so next season we will really see what SM is made of. Damn well hope it’s more exciting than this season

Not sure what this possession football is trying to achieve. Take yesterday as an example:-

Wigan 70% possession, 13 shots, 5 on target.

Burton 30% possession, 15 shots, 4 on target.

So with over twice the amount of possession than Burton, we still allow them more shots.
That tells me that the theory of keeping the ball from the opposition doesn’t work. Had it not been for Sam Tickle, Burton would have done a smash and grab.
Shaun needs to get back to the drawing board before next season

Just like the Fleetwood scenario. Another PUIAB.

I also fear that if we do get a “windfall” from a Robinson move to Chelsea, the money will be earmarked for the general running of the club and not seen as a bonus to be spent on bolstering the squad. We could actually end up with a less able squad than we have now

I have to agree with alot already said above. We basically don’t have a forward no focal point. Humphrys and Aasgaard are certainly not what I’d class as forwards. J.Jones played very well for me, I love the positivity he brings to a fairly negative side as he’s always prepared to take players on and attack with pace.

I’d break the bank for Chambers he’s gonna go all the way. He never makes a mistake and always looks to go forward

I hope S.Smith can make that right back position his own over Claire he’s a far better more aggressive player than Claire.

My tin hat goes on here for my next remark but I don’t get Adeeko. The manager see’s something I don’t. For me he gives the ball away far far too easy and too often. He rarely wins it back and it’s alot of headless chicken stuff for me looking busy but not actually doing much.

That second half was like the Alamo and we got pummelled but held on. Was it good defending or poor finishing?, today I’ll say it was more like poor finishing especially the sitter of a header tr TV TVhey missed.

At the end of the day it’s 3 points against a side who’s fighting for a play off spot so we can’t grumble but playing like that 2nd is a dangerous game to play.

There’s a basis of a very good side. The problem Maloney has is finding a steady regular starting 11, he prefers using 16 players per game

As for Magennis coming on ? It’s like going down to 10 men hence no rest bite up front.

I’ve raised this possession football mallarky a couple of times on this board.
Sad to say, but that’s how modern football is played.
Today we played the possession card in the second half and it worked; but not without giving the fans the jitters. Had we been able to bang a second in before the 60 min mark, we would have been in cruise control.
So just for VAT 69, here are my comments from previous posts:-
As previously stated, I for one would love the legend that is Shaun Maloney to become one of our all time favourite Managers.
I think the problem starts with football in general, whereby it’s “fashionable” to play possession football and Managers follow the herd rather than create their own winning brand / style of exciting football. Anyone remember Kevin Keegan at Newcastle; if they score three, we’ll score four.
I think I posted the following comments 3 or 4 months ago: listening to post match analysis on Radio Lancashire, Kevin Gallagher was decrying the style of Blackburn Rovers and other Championship teams. This Saturday, after watching Blackburn Vs Plymouth he was reiterating the same comments, saying: how a lot of the games are boring because Managers have adopted this possession philosophy, but haven’t got sufficient skill sets within the squad to pull it off. In other words you cannot emulate Liverpool or Man City without the right ingredients.
I do get this thing about “possession” if you are playing Premier League or European football, where the standard of the players are generally World class and if you lose the ball you can be punished at the blink of an eye. However, we are playing in League One where class is replaced by cut & thrust energy & enthusiasm and we must therefore have a more adaptive style of play, but still be able to play the possession game when we need to “shut up shop” to secure the three points to win (and not to protect a draw).

    Yes, we were woeful !
Didn’t feel like a well earned win. In fact, if Leyton Orient had equalised in the last 10 mins +, we would have walked off the DW thinking “that was a fair result”.
If Skeggy Mon thinks that was a wonderful win, he’s been taking the same deluded pills as S.M.

And don’t give me all that “young squad” tripe !
Just take a look at the age profile of the team that Leyton Orient fielded :-( :-(
And they plated some decent football without being big boot or dirty :-( :-(

I always remember Roberto’s first few words in the post match interview after losing 9-1 at Spurs.
He felt there were some positives that he could take from the game; whilst I was screaming “give your head a wobble’ at the screen.
This season feels a bit like deja vu. Every time we get beaten, it’s by World beating teams such as Exeter, Stevenage & Fleetwood and honesty is conveniently avoided.
We need to see a big reaction & improvement this Saturday.

Makes me wonder if the Manager / Team Meetings are an open forum; but the players aren’t allowed to offer any constructive criticism of strategies & performance.
As a “senior” member of the squad, maybe Callum Lang spoke up in the interests of the Team and got blown away by SM

And to add to that, like me you probably had to queue for two hours to buy your ticket in the first place !

I think that Swallow flew South, yesterday.
Certainly wasn’t circling over Highbury Stadium :bye: :bye: :bye:

The most memorable thing about today, was the Sharp’s Atlantic Pale Ale in Jim’s bar before the game :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:
