Went out for a pint or three in Wigan yesterday to try and gauge the Rugby league world cup in the taverns of our great town what did I find in the last orders is akin to the jockey on shameless a few flags put up and the majority watching Liverpool v West Brom a mon walked in shouting get this shyte off put racing on a total disgrace for the said center of the universe of rugby league tried the Raven not a flaming flag up in the place went on to the tudor same story nobody talking about the greatest game in the world are times changing in this town ????

Maybe it was something to do with every TV set in the land being able to receive BBC, and folk didnt have to venture to a pub to watch it on sky or some dodgy foreign stream.

I’d have thought you should really be more concerned about your side’s alarming position in the 2nd tier and their inability to sell out of tickets when its a fiver.

As tragic as the whole case is, it was avoidable. The McCanns should not have left their kids unsupervised, and no amount of PR can change that.

Whilst I sincerely hope she is found, I very much doubt its going to happen. However, I also hope this £5million (and rising) cost of the UK police investigating the case will result in the McCanns being prosecuted for leaving their kids alone while they went out.

My apologies, the 173,000 was taken from a site that wasn’t as reliable. However from http://www.barb.co.uk/viewing/weekly-top-10? the viewing figures for 2013 are as follows:

    Superbowl – 258,000
    1st day of ashes – 478,000
    Grand Final – 276,000
    Playoff Final – Championship 994,000, League 1 – 389,000, League 2 – 441,000
    3rd Lions Test – 975,000

I threw in a couple of bonus ones:

    Heineken Cup Final – 265,000
    NFL Divisional Playoffs – 147,000 & 115,000
    Wigan v Leeds Playoffs – 205,000
    Live Rugby Union (28 Sep) – 103,000

I would say that Superleague compares very favourably – only beaten by football and international sporting events. Rugby Union club games rarely even appear in the top 10.

I meant on sky, who are the company currently under-paying for what is quite a popular product. Free TV will always attract more viewers. Based on that theory, women’s football is more popular than Championship Football, where the viewing figures are less than 500,000. Very few premiership games get over 1 million viewers.

The actual breakdown is only available via subscription, but FYI, the Superbowl was watched by 173,000 on Sky Sports, with the next best being 125000 for a divisional play-off. I cant be bothered to find the other sports.

Perhaps the next negotiation with Sky needs to be a bit more robust by the governing body.

SL is the 2nd most popular team sport on TV, regularly attracting around 200,000 viewers when its on Sky Sports 1.

I like the idea concerning the “beefed up” league and revised play-off as suggested by mutty. The only thing I can’t get me head round is the “closed shop” – no promotion /relegation. To me, this is an essential part of league sport,so as to maximise interest both at the top and bottom of the league.

My 15 (16 if you left Leigh as a stand-alone club) team league proposal could be split into SL1 and 2 with 8 in each playing each other 4 times with one promotion/relegation slot.

You would get 28 very intense, competitive games, compared to now, where about half of them are very one-sided affairs.

Catalan are actually pretty well-supported – the French experiment only failed when the RFL tried to move into Paris.

For me, there should be a SL of 15 teams:

    Wigan
    Leeds
    Saints
    Warrington
    Catalan
    Hull
    Hull KR
    Widnes
    Cumbria
    East Lancs (Salford, Leigh, Swinton
    South Yorks (Doncaster, Sheffield)
    Huddersfield
    Bradford
    Calder (Wakefield, Castleford, Featherstone)
West Yorks (Made up from Halifax, Batley, Dewsbury, Keighley)

The remaining clubs (York, Oldham etc can remain in their current form in a development league. Looking at the tables, Hunslet & York add no value to the Championship. Rochdale & Oldham are a league below with the development clubs (London Skolars etc).

All TV & sponsorship money should be split 80% to SL clubs, 10% to RFL, 10% to development clubs.

    Salary cap retained, but increased.

Top of the League are champions. By all means have a play-off afterwards if there is a desire for another competition, but make it one where there are no 2nd chances for losers.

    Challenge Cup to remain.

Incremental money for whatever place you finish in the league, and make it worth their while playing for position.

No promotion and relegation. Licence system to continue, allowing SL clubs to plan, and also allowing development clubs to develop before they are thrown into the Lions Den.

If that were adopted in Super League – merging small clubs to create teams like Calderdale, South Yorkshire, East Yorkshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester etc (I’m sure someone could come up with some catchy names), you could turn many small fanbases into a few much larger fanbases and their teams could then compete on a more even keel with teams like Wigan, St Helens, Leeds and Warrington who have the fanbase and resources to operate on a stand-alone basis.

The merging of Huddersfield & Sheffield took place in 1999. The clubs merged as Huddersfield/Sheffield Eagles, and played at Huddersfield, for all bar 2 games. Very quickly the “Sheffield” and “eagles” were quietly dropped, and they became the Huddersfield Giants. Sheffield re-formed the Eagles in Sheffield, where they still play.

Castleford & Wakefield were supposed to be merging, and fought tooth and nail to retain their individual identities. They are still in SL as stand-alone clubs, attracting crowds of around half what Wigan & Leeds get, but with the same costs wrt staff, infrastructure etc. Result is that they dont have a hope in hell of breaking into the top 5.

It was also mooted that Cumbrian clubs should merge to form one SL club. They all resisted, with the result being that all three clubs are bumping along in the lower echalons.

The RFL needs to accept that RL will never rival RU, football etc and cut its cloth accordingly. So what if its an M62-dominated sport? If the folk along the M62 like it and will go to watch it then so be it.

Whilst it may seem an insular approach, it is a far more realistic one. Wales has been tried and failed, as has London. RU has the money and the influence to crush any attempt by RL to develop in these areas, and they do just that. I compare it with opening a village store on the doorsteps of Tescos.

If any of you are interested(!), there is a long thread here with comments as to the background, pro’s and cons of such a move by IL:

Personally, I feel that the governing body have failed in their duty to promote the sport, and its little wonder that the majority of the top clubs (and their fans) are fed up with the way the sport is being run.

    talking bllx again mutty
wurriors are no bruce springesteen nor a club well known around the globe like we are
leigh stadium would be quite sufficient for such a small event, or even one of the other big named rugby clubs
infact why dont you stick to some sport from down south where you belong and stick to shandy drinking you southern tart ;)

You would be hard-pushed to find another club competition in the UK this weekend that attracts a higher attendance than the one that will be at Old Trafford tonight.

It may not be full, but one things for sure – It will certainly be more than 4 times, and possibly more than 5 times the piss-poor crowd that bothered to show up at the DW on Thursday. Now that was an embarrassment – almost as bad as the 12181 that showed up for your first ever league cup semi final.

God help your crowds if you get through the group and folk actually have to pay to go! ;)

Being played on a football ground.
What does that tell the World !

Bruce Springsteen played at several sports stadium this summer – what does that tell the world?

It tells them that the events were so popular that they needed an arena large enough to meet demand.
