Thanks for the history lesson Sammy. The article tells me that, after clearing their £3m debt and selling CP for £12.5m, there was £9.5 million left.

What it doesn’t tell me was what was the value of the sale of Springfield Park. Perhaps you or one of your historians can enlighten me, and then tell me how much of the profit from the sale of the old ground was used towards the building of the new one. When you answer this question, you may realise why the ground is still owned by a company other than Wigan Athletic FC.

He may have plans to buy us out and the ground and Charnock Richard etc etc. Could move Salford RL in to our place and chuck the Warriors out. Maybe the Warriors will be off to their first choice in Horwich. Got to admit I would rather have Salford at our place than those ungratefully disgusting parasites.

he doesn’t want to buy wafc he wants to buy the rugby team and stadium
And then send the laughtics off to Salford to share with them and Sale Sharks. Then you can truly be the Manchester United of the lower leagues.
Surprised at you mutt, more chance of Nelson getting his eye back. Normally you are a reasoned at times and sensible lad but you are hoping beyond belief now. If any of the clubs ever leave the DW and I don’t think for one minute they ever will it will be the Warriors. What both clubs have now works, whatever both sets of fans think it works.Whether Blue or Cherry and White we will always be Wigan.
Agreed. In the hard world of economics, having an expensive item that is only utilised for 23 out of 365 days a year is bad for business. Having a dual purpose stadium is the way ahead – even premier league grounds such as the Etihad now host major concerts, and if Man City and their multi billionaire owners are finding an alternative use of their stadium, then the DW must be used for as much time as possible to bring in an income stream that covers the cost of running it. Remember, the stadium is run by a separate company, and the two clubs pay rent to use it, and if that company cannot cover their costs with the rental money then they must look elsewhere to raise money. If that doesn’t happen, then the company will turn to the tenants and increase their rent. You only need to look at Coventry and the Ricoh to see what happens when a once prosperous football club falls to the 3rd division and then has its rent increased.

Frankly Im sick of the myth being pedalled that the Warriors are cuckoos, parasites etc. The land was given to DW at no charge on the basis that it would be a dual purpose stadium. The sale of Central Park to Tescos raised more than the sale of Springfield Park. The ground is owned by a separate company. The Warriors have a lease to play at the DW, just as the football do. Both clubs are very happy with the arrangement.

in reply to: Ins And Outs! #142765

Ins:

Some 34 year old who played for Blackpool last season.
A goalkeeper who has been on loan to about 10 clubs, and has never played higher than 3rd division.
Possibly a bloke who got relegated out of the football league with Tranmere.

Outs:

The last of the class of 2013 and all the loanees.

All the others have made noises but don’t have the balls to submit a transfer request because they’d have to forgo a pay-off.

And you won it the season before last, when your home record wasn’t so appalling.

It always ranked high on the list of “looking forward to” games amongst the Sunderland supporters, mainly due to the price, the view, and the number of tickets made available.

My oldest memory is of my younger brother coming along with me and my dad to a NPL game. We stood on the few rows of terracing at the Shevvy end. My brother spent the whole game sat on the hill digging a hole with a stick and then proudly sitting in it. He cried when we went home as he wanted to stay sitting in it.

On-field, the first home league game against Grimsby and the 4-2 cup win against Chelsea stand out, as does the Mackem mud slide which is still the funniest event I’ve witnessed at a game! The last game I attended at SP was against Chester where a bloke called Keith Gillespie tore their defence a collective 2nd ar$ehole. I didn’t know at the time he was a loanee from Man Utd!

I’m thinking of him proudly standing there, arms folded and the good leg standing on a war chest.

Like this perhaps?

Every team in the soup or leek apart from Catalan Dragons, are your big local derbies.

Sure they are. Now, who in the 3rd division are going to be the team that you cheer when you hear they are losing at half time. Who are your footballing big rivals, and will they hate you with as much passion as Preston*, Bolton* do?

Whats going to be the chant from the remaining available seats in the Boston stand:

We hate Bury and we hate Bury
If you all hate Fleetwood clap your hands.
Stand up if you hate the ‘Dale.
Oldham – You’re just a small town in Yorkshire.

(* – actually they dont even recognise you, let alone class you as a rival)

Blackpool, Fleetwood, Rochdale, Oldham and Bury for derbies next year. Strewth, is that how for we have fallen. Just can’t believe it!

Out of that lot, are Bury now your big local Derby?

Thanks. Just contemplating whether to watch Bruce or Colback suffer the relegation anguish on my laptop whilst watching Sunderland party on down at the bridge on Sky 1. Lumped the last of my dosh in my sportsbook account on Hull to go down – don’t mind losing £20 if it means the mags are playing at Rotherham next season

:-)

If he does leave, as long as IL doesn’t take any tips on hiring managers from the two Dave’s then I’ll be happy.

Why are folk comparing footballer’s wages to the fan’s wages? Most players in the Conference earn more than us mere mortals!

Because he is looking to the fans for sympathy.

Admittedly they live in another world, but remember the “sympathy” from Joe Public for Ashley Cole when it was revealed he was only offered £60K a week to stay at Arsenal.

in reply to: Bye Bye Boycey ? #142401

Has this “laughable” offer been divulged anywhere, or is Boyce playing the fans like a well-loved fiddle to drum up sympathy?

Say he was on £20K a week and took a 40% cut in 2013 (after his cup-winning bonus), his basic would have been £12K a week. If the new contract offer meant he had to take a further 40% cut, his basic would have been £7200 a week – still earning more in a month than most of the supporters earn in a year.

His earnings over the past 9 years would be somewhere well above £5 million, so if he is crying poverty, I for one am not going to feel sympathetic.
