Don’t seem to get in the way in the rugby.

Doesn’t matter how good the coverage is, you can only polish a t**d so far.

Has this World Cup seen the death of wingers? They’re all doing the Bobby tactic of playing right footers on left and vice versa. Dull.

“I think ti is wrong of you to put Scharner in the ‘Passers through’ Category. He stayed, saw out his contract (Although stated he wanted to leave a few times) and also we are not selling him for a profit so that voids him from that group. So then which group would you say he was in.

Also I don’t mind the ‘passers through’ if we get a good season or 2 out of them and get a profit. Helps the club stay afloat.”

Yes, Scharner is a funny one – I included him because he would have been off like a shot if a bigger club had come in for him, but his ability on the pitch didn’t match that in his head, and he never played for long enough in his best position of centre half. But he did give us a good few seasons. Like you, I don’t mind a few of these types, but I predict under Martinez we’ll be seeing a lot more than I would like.

I don’t mind picking up good young players from the lower leagues, as long as we can get decent quality. We should be at the advantage of offering first team football. McCarthy is a good example – its been good for him coming here as if he’d gone to a top 7 side he’d still be waiting for his first game. I disagree with you about Taylor. He was no Zidane, but always worked hard and good on a dead ball, winning us quite a few games. I think his injuries didn’t help him fulfill his potential. I don’t think you could call him a failure – think we only paid 1-2 million?

I think that any decent home-grown kids in this area get snapped up by the bigger clubs. I agree it would be nice to have more coming through, though.

It amazes me that we don’t put more effort in. If you look at the local “big” clubs, most of them, particularly Liverpool, don’t give their kids a chance. We should be able to push to parents that their kids might actually get a go at Latics. But I suppose to many parents its an ego trip “my lad is at Utd” even though they’re unlikely to get a chance, and by the time the big clubs decide they’re not going to make it they’ve often missed the boat in terms of development In a wider context, what parent in their right mind would let their kid sign for Arsenal? (Unless they’re French)

On my original point, I think someone posted that they felt no bond with this team when they were doing the lap of honour, which I agree with to an extent apart from a few, as most of the current first team have no apparent love of the club.

“You don’t really realise what kind of club we are, do you?

And most of our fans don’t deserve bonding with, to be fair

Yes, I’ve watched us for 30 years. To me, there’s been four generic types of players that have kept us in the Prem. I’d like to add a fifth.

    1. Rehabilitations. Best examples, Heskey, Bramble, Kirkland. Established players who’ve lost their way and found themselves again at Latics.

    2. Old Hands. E.g De Zeuw, Henchoz, Melchiot. Proven quality that has a year or two to give.

    3. Lower division finds – e.g McCarthy, Boyce, Moses, Taylor. Good young talent that we are in a position to give first team football to.

    4. Foreign “passers through” – Chimbonda, Valencia, Palacios, Scharner, probably Rodallega, Diame, Figueroa. We get a year or two before flogging at a profit.

    5. I’d like to add a category of home developed players that will have a real link and bond with the club. We’ve only had Baines in this so far.

I’m saying I’d like less of category 4, and more of 1, 2, 3 and 5. Sorry if that means I’ve got no idea according to you.

Maybe he’d be better off taking time off to have a good rethink of last seasons terrible tactics

    Great, more Carlos Kickaball types.

Bringing in foreign mercenaries who will leave at a drop of a hat doesn’t build much of a bond between team and fans.

I must admit it crossed my mind not to renew, due to the poor quality of football this season – everything funnelled down the centre, too predictable, easy to defend against, boring with little goal threat.

But I will go, as I’ve been going for 30 years, and I hope Martinez will start producing more attractive, and particularly, purposeful football.

I would say that under Bruce the team as a whole had more balance, and looked better as an attacking force, yes. OK he had Valencia who gave quality right sided width, but Martinez has Moses who could do the same.

If we’re playing 4-5-1. (we’re not playing 4-3-3 as some suggest), I’d rather see it the way Bruce played it with real width. Take Zog example, and assuming we had any sort of centre forward, Zog gets the ball down left flank beats full back, gets to byline, we should have the centre forward at near post, the right sided winger on far post and the advanced midfielder(s), say Watson, bursting through the middle. Because Zog and others aren’t cutting inside all the time you’re giving him more space to run through. Thats what Tottenham did to us in the 9-1 win with Lennon torturing Edman.

    in reply to: zogbia #33737

I have judged him on his performances. He gets the ball, cuts in on his left foot, runs right across all the central midfielders, removing all the space, beats one or two players, then loses it. Thats why he rarely creates a goalscoring chance. He’s a good player being misused in my view, and it symptomatic of Bobbys style. Looks good for a while, but finishes up creating nothing.

Under Bruce I thought he played well on the left, and with Valencia on the right gave the team balance and width which we don’t now have.

    in reply to: zogbia #33734

So you guys would have played Valencia on the left then….

He’s got the odd goal cutting in, but not many assists this year. I reckon he’d have had more impact with assists playing on his natural side and getting down the wing properly. We’ve spent all season playing in front of teams, and this is one reason for it.

    in reply to: zogbia #33711

    Yes.

Can’t stand this modern trend of playing the wingers on the wrong wings. its really dull football. You end up funnelling everything through the middle, becoming very predictable and easy for poor teams to defend against.

    in reply to: zogbia #33573

We’re playing him out of position anyway, so might as well flog him
