SW – I agree that thats what he’s trying to do. I don’t think its particularly effective, nor that attractive to watch.

I think crosses into the box would work OK – say Zog played left side, you’d get Scotland near post, Rodagella far post who would always beat a left back in the air (like super Lee always used to beat their right back), plus Scharner, good in air from midfield.

Like you, I’m not a coach, but the system Martinez is playing seems overly intricate and beyond the ability of the players he’s got to break down lesser teams

SW and SMB – re the 4-3-3 with wingers playing on the wrong side, in practice Rodagella and NZog don’t play high enough up to make it 4-3-3, and the full backs don’t get far enough forward, so it becomes a narrow 5 man midfield, easy for mediocre teams to play against – I don’t think its any coincidence that we have struggled against the poorer sides this season without width from the likes of Valencia. Don’t let Zog scoring one great goal cutting in fool you that this is the way to go.

Personally I’d like to see the wide men switch to their natural sides against the poorer sides to stretch play, and create space for the attacking centre mid to burst into.

At the moment the wide men are cutting in all the time into congested areas and becoming easy to defend against – its how the best teams defend – show them inside, and our players don’t have the ability to play intricately through it

Hardly a stupid comment. 31 appearances, two goals. I can think of maybe three or four he’s set up. As I said, end product doesn’t justify the laziness, as he’s cost us more goals than he’s scored with stupid mistakes in stupid parts of the pitch. If you’re going to be a lazy git on the pitch, you’d better make sure you score plenty, or set plenty up, or you’ll find yourself on the bench as he has.

As for Gomez, he’s not played enough to make a judgement, but first impressions for me are better than Koumas.

Thanks for taking the time to put these notes up, especially for people like me who live a long way away and can only get to matches.

Good read. Still not convinced by Bobbys tactic of right footer on the left and left footer on the right especially against weaker teams – makes us play too narrow and easier for weaker teams to defend against

Scotland – works really hard, pretty good at holding it up, quite mobile, runs the channels pretty well, can’t score in a month of Sundays

    He’s the new Heskey!

End product doesn’t justify the laziness. He’s as lazy as Le Tissier was for Southampton, but he used to score 10 a season and set up twice as many.

Gomez looks likely to be more effective on end product, and busier.

EL – yes that liverpool one was the one I was referring to when Thommo turned Hansen in the area and smashed it past Grobelaar right in front of us. I think Brian Griffiths scored a good free kick as well, but that was at other end in front of the Kop – still pretty sweet moment that as well.

banjo – know what you’re saying, but I don’t think they really addressed my point, which is why I replied again.

If they’re going to waste that amount of time on it rather than showing the match they should at least give a balanced view. Thats what I was saying, and they didn’t answer that.

Unfortunately I am old enough to remember the 5-3 win over Port Vale from 3 down, but didn’t include it as I was on hols in Devon. Gave up listening to the radio at 3-0 with 30 mins to go. Couldn’t believe it on final score!

Another top moment was Mellors last minute winner at the Riverside (about the only decent thing he did for us), particularly for me as I live in the North East and my in laws are big Boro fans. Sweet.

in reply to: 80% home crowd full #12652

Good going I’d say. More home fans there than the Utd or the Chelsea game.

I sent an email to MOTD2 last night, pointing out a few reasons why 16,000 home fans for probably the least attractive home game of the season is pretty good for a club in a small town thats come from where we have. I also asked why, in a 5 minute highlights package of a good game, they wasted almost a minute going on about the crowds, and mentioned it again in the discussion afterwards. Show us the football fgs!

We’re a small club in a relatively small town with a divided sports watching public between two sports. Get over it MOTD!

God – hadn’t thought about the obvious one – Unsworths penalty at Bramall Lane. Suppose I wasn’t there though and I was at all the others – have to be there to get the full champagne effect!

Forgot Camaras wonder goal at Sunderland

And Pie’n’gravy…Why on earth would a big four team sign boyce…really?[/quote]

Sorry, should have been more specific. I don’t think a “big 4” team would sign Boyce, Bramble or Scharner. But one of these clubs with delusions of grandeur e.g Spurs, Villa, Sunderland, Newcastle, City etc might, if they were sensible, try and sign one of them. Reliable Premiership level centre halves don’t come easily (Fitz Hall anyone?). But luckily for us they go for “trophy” buys like Collocini instead of our lads.

If Joleon Lescott is worth £22m, what are our three worth? Does anyone on here think that the lumbering alky fool Dunne (can’t remember what Villa paid for him) is a better player than any of our three?

in reply to: Another Killer #11290

Re. Collocini – try using your own eyes. He made more mistakes in his first 10 games than Boyce has done in his Wigan career. OK he’s an Argentinian international, so there must be a good player in there somewhere, but for me, he was one of the key reasons they went down. (and Steven Taylor was no better). I’d definitely rather have Boyce, Bramble or Scharner than him on what I’ve seen of him so far.

Whenever the transfer window opens my main worry is that we’re going to lose one of our three centre halves, but thankfully most of the “big” clubs go for “trophy” buys like Collocini rather than proven Prem centre halves like our three. Long may it continue. Certainly wouldn’t take Kilgallon above those three. Wasn’t he the one that did the needless handball for Unsworths penalty vs Sheff U?

in reply to: Another Killer #11219

“He isnt quick, not a good header of the ball and nothing special at tackling.”

You must be watching a different player to me mate. Boyce for me is a class defender. Quick, good in the air, good tackler makes v. few mistakes. Up there with the best centre halves ever at Wigan. I for one would be gutted if he left, but glad he’s so underrated in the Prem, and the likes of Newcastle paid shedloads for rubbish like Collocini.
