Did I see on the released list that Pollitt was going? If so, and Ali stays, wonder who’ll be first reserve? Can’t see Kirkland wanting to sit on the bench any more.

Is the young lad good enough? If you’re good enough, you’re old enough – the big Spanish teams would have had him playing by now if he was.

Not very outstanding at sunderland were they and on numerous occasions during the season, thats why we were in the bottom 3 for almost an entire season because they were oustanding. if we dont strengthen at centre half we will struggle again

I agree with you that we need more strength at centre half, but I don’t think Woodgate is the man to fit into Martinez’s buying policy and ethos, which I personally agree with. If we could get an experienced centre half with good leadership qualities and fitness record like De Zeuw (or Henchoz, who I think was a good buy for that one season), then maybe. But I don’t think Woodgate is that man.

Personally I think the reason we were in the bottom three for most of the season was a lack of goals, caused by a lack of attacking intent.

For all sorts of reasons I wouldn’t touch him with a bargepole. I would like to see Bobby continue his policy of buying relatively young hungry players.

Any older players would have to show they were fit and up for it. Woodgate is neither.

    Yes, he’s a good guy!

Time will tell whether he becomes a good manager. Here’s hoping!

A couple of realistic targets (that I’d be happy with) are Holloway or Adkins.

Curbishley I’d also be pleased with as he has a good record of developing smaller clubs. Don’t think he would come north for a small club though.

Currently living in the North East, I happened to watch a few Boro games under McLaren. He was poor, and wasted an awful lot of money on dodgy players that they are still financially recovering from now. I definitely wouldn’t want him anywhere near our club.

Hughes and O’Neill wouldn’t realistically come to Latics.

MickeyC – I’d lust like to see a manager who uses the width and length of the pitch, and doesn’t wait until his back is completely against the wall before he sends his teams out with any attacking intent.

Holloway? Seriously? If you want to see 4-3 defeats and go down then be my guest, I’d prefer less entertaining wins to be honest.

Bobby has never said he wants to leave, he’s received constant backing from Whelan even when many were slagging him off and he constantly talks of the next level and a long term future at Latics. I have no idea why on earth he’d want to leave and throw Whelan’s support in his face and the plans in the bin.

Holloway almost kept a very poor squad of mainly lower league players in the Prem. Martinez almost got a much superior squad with much more combined top level experience relegated. If Bobby was to leave, (and I hope he doesn’t) it would be interesting to see what Holloway could do with a better squad. And it would certainly be more entertaining than what Bobby has served up….

Struggling to care to be honest. If he wants to go, and they want him, let him go.

Maybe we could get a manager in like Holloway who would play more entertaining football than Martinez has managed – might be interesting to see what he could do with a better squad of players.

Personally though I think Villa would be making a big mistake if they appointed him rather than a proven manager like Hughes.

I thought he did OK for us as well, chances limited by Bainsey.

A couple of those posts reminded me of Fred Eyre’s book, when he was playing at Southport he was asked to switch full back positions. The local paper said something like “this makes no difference to the versatile Eyre, who can play equally badly in numerous positions”!

Its a shame how the country has lost interest in the England team.

Funny – I was thinking the same. When Switzerland scored those two, I was laughing. Seems many others think the same.

My only interest in the game was seeing how Baines played, and I was pleased to see him do well.

    So Gohouri has re-signed.

Anyone got any good news to report?

in reply to: Martinez to Fulham? #67131

He’s been linked with Villa in the Guardian this morning – more realistic I’d say.

Wouldn’t be disastrous if he went. If he wants to go, let him, and we’ll have someone who wants to be here.

If he wants to stay, great!

We should all be used to people who have a little bit of success for us wanting to leave for “big” clubs by now – Jewell, Heskey, Bullard, Baines, Valencia, Palacios etc etc….

We’ll see what Martinez is made of over the next couple of months.

I don’t think Cleverly looks Utd first team class. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him back next season, possibly permanently.

in reply to: Best and worst signings in the Prem #66933

    Best:

    1. Hate to say it, but Camara, despite his strops and disappearances, did as much to keep us up as any player. Scored lots of goals, many of them great.

    2. Valencia – Jewell picked up a bargain there.

    3. If I’m allowed a third, for what Jewell paid for Boycie, what we’ve got from him has turned out a bargain.

    Worst:

    1. Boselli, but fingers crossed he may yet come good

    2. Landzaat was disappointing, but arguing against myself, I’m not sure he was disastrous

    3. A mixture of forwards including Marcus Bent and Marlon King, who couldn’t pick up the simple idea that Heskey wins everything and all you had to do was stay close to him and RUN! when he wins it.
