Of the games I was at in order
Reading at home for promotion
Away at Coventry in cup
Away at Leeds 2-0 in Championship
Away at Liverpool League cup (whilst we were 2-1 up……)Someone mentioned Reading home being bitter sweet because of all the glory seekers turning up. Slightly harsh I thought! I know a lot of people who went that day, who maybe go to 6-10 games a year. OK, they aren’t diehards, but they’ve supported Latics at some level for a long time. And we’d have been gutted on a day when we needed to win to get up if the ground had been half empty….
Quite funny I thought!
Reminds me of an old Latics match day announcer who told us that player x had a problem with his calf, but the rest of his herd was OK!
Obvious. Take the £5m and bring back Roy Tunks. Failing that, Tony Pennock. Or Phil Hughes. Or Simon Farnworth. Or Nigel Adkins. Better stop now – showing my age
SMB – you forgot one of our own board members – Maurice Lyndsey. He hates us as well.
Strange move by Coyle in my view. He’s made a good rep for himself at Burnley. If he’d kept Burnley up, he could have held out for a bigger club, and even if they go down he’ll still be well thought of. I know he’s got links with Bolton, but seems at best a sideways step.
Reminds me of Jewells ill advised move to Derby – he’d got his reputation from taking Bradford and us up and keeping us there – should have waited for a better club.
Compared to what we paid for him, our worst ever buy.
It doesn’t reflect well on him, that we gave him probably his last chance at proving himself at highest level at Wigan, and he has never seemed interested in putting in the work required. Even on Saturday, if he’d had a blinder, there’s not many others pulling up trees, so could have got back in the team. I’d get shut of him back to a Championship club where he can be a bigger fish in a smaller pond.
“It was £6m + Taylor, which to me still seems a bit steep.”
You’re right – I remember there being a fee involved, but thought it was nominal. £6m + Taylor does seem a bit more pricey, but he’s probably starting to justify that now. Chance of him leaving in Jan, but surely not to Birmingham
NZogbias move to us was make or break for him. If he performs to his potential/ability, as he seems to have been doing recently he’ll be going to a much bigger team than Birmingham (e.g he’s a better winger than anyone Liverpool have got at the moment). If he doesn’t, why would he want to go to Birmingham from us anyway? It’d be another Ellington move to West Brom.
Still, I thought we’d got a great deal at the time swapping him for Taylor, and its looking that way now.
Duke – you’re right – I am aware that you can pick the said DVD up for a pittance, but he is pre pocket money age! And I definitely got more than £1 of value from watching all those wins again! And Roberts/Camara were great!
As for Jewell, I agree he’d lost his way by 06/07. Kept us up and was honest enough to leave us at the right time. Good on him.
m_a – my point is Scotland is playing up on his own and being asked to do a lot without much support. Bent, King etc played off Heskey who won everything in the air and did all their work for them. All they had to do was realise they just needed to get within 10 yards of Heskey every time the ball was played up, and they’d get on the end of something in time. Owen did it for years at Liverpool its not rocket science. That makes the likes of them (and I don’t remember King ever scoring in open play) far worse players than Scotland, who puts in a lot of effort for the team in my book.
OK he’s not scored. And I’d rather see Rodallega up front and our wingers on the right wings. Works hard though, runs the channels and definitely not our worst Prem forward.
I give you Marcus Bent and Marlon King. Both v. poor strike rates and lazy gits. At least Scotland works his arse off. Neither of them had the intelligence to work out that if they’d played off Heskey properly they could have got 15 goals a season.
And we’ve not only got the goal of the season (although if it was a ‘big’ club it’d still be being replayed every hour…), but now got the save of the season as well with Kirklands late effort.
Vat69 – looks like you agree with me!
And at the risk of going too deep at the psyche of it, in Sky/Prem terms the likes of us and Wolves are just fodder for the big 4 clubs – so the prawn sandwich brigade can open their hampers and sit back and join the goal fest. But they’re arrogant enough to want it to be the best team that the others can put out so they can smirk even more. They think that the likes of Wolves and us should feel honoured to play at their palaces – that is all we can aspire to. When the likes of McCarthy reject that “deal”, it becomes an affront to their power and ego – playing at Old Trafford should be the height of their season – why are they not taking it seriously?
The ego of it becomes apparent when they play weakened teams against the rest. Ferguson said something last season about his weakened team still being one of the best in the division – maybe so, but its still a weakened team and is not showing their opponents and the rest of the division any respect.
Like I said, I’m not sure McCarthy has made the right decision, but at the end of the season he’ll be judged on whether he has kept them up, not whether he kept the score at Old Trafford down to 2-0 instead of 5-0. Sky helped create the financial monster that is the Premier League – they can hardly complain when the smaller clubs start playing the tactics to stay in it.
2nd rant over!
I feel very sorry for the fans who travelled and shelled out £42. Mind you, until fans start refusing to pay those sorts of prices, they’ll never come down. Thats another issue.
But it all smacks of double standards. The big clubs with managers like Wenger are the first to start moaning about weakened sides, then are the first to do it – e.g Liverpool at Fulham that nearly sent us down, and Utd last season. The pressure put on us to put on a show in a meaningless game for us vs Utd 2 seasons ago….I’d have been tempted to play the reserves that day. The PL have written to Wolves asking for an explanation but took no action against Utd or Liverpool in the other cases
I quite admire McCarthy for having the balls to make a decision that he thought was right for his team – if he really thinks it’ll help him get 3 pts against Burnley, that could be the result that keeps them up. I’d call that strong management, whether you agree with his judgement or not. The fact that Utd operate in a different world where the likes of McCarthy can’t imagine getting a result at Old Trafford is an indictment on the PL rather than McCarthy.
I’d be sorry to see him go. Ok he should keep his gob shut sometimes, but his versatility adds a lot, usually gives 100% and was an excellent value for money signing – Jewell paid about £3m for him I think.
