The likes of fulham have lost 6 – 8000 fans since dropping to the championship, we by my reckoning have lost a couple of thousand since last season. But anyone remember our first season i think in the championship years ago versus palace & we only drew in 6,500.
We seem to have that hardcore of 12000 still. I dont know what yesterdays crowd was, but why the doom & gloom i dont know. Doom & gloom was around 93-94 & we averaged crowds of 1200, which i feel proud to say that i was there during our darkest period in all my 36 years of watching wigan when that was a sh1t team & manager.
We have got off to a slow start admittedly, many teams do & we will hit bad patches throughout the season, again, many teams do. & the talk about replacing good players with average. Remember what league we are in. We cant attract certain players now. We are in the championship & can only attract players from that league or lower or risk a foreign import.
It could be worse. We could support fulham who spent £11 million on just one striker & who got tonked yesterday. They probably thought they could come to this division & walk it. They are finding & hopefully to a great cost, it dosen’t work like that. & if they don’t go up, it is they more than ourselves who will discover the cost of failing to get to the premiership.
Technically i’m kind of at fault for being one of those not renewing my ST but as i’ve said a few times now, my reason is mainly because of work & my shifts clashing with home games. I have had the pleasure of the first 2 home games but that is it now for me until 1 game in september then november. Hopefully things will improve after the new year & i can get one of those half season ones.
Go on then leyland i’ll post a comment.
Thought we looked good today & some good individual performances albeit against a poor side i admit, but created enough chances to score 5, 6 or even more. Personally i thought riera not wanting to come off was a good sign that he wanted to stay on & try to score more. Took his goal well btw.
Good to get our first 3 points today. MOM for me, probably perch though i was also impressed with ramis, mcarthur & huws.
Still need another goal scoring striker & midfielder.
I would be highly surprised if we feature.
This site needs griff & it has been boring & quiet without him IMO. No, i’m not defending him before anyone accuses me of that. But i happen to like his opinions, (as i do most on here cos we are all entitled to them & the diversity of our opinions), but i also miss his sarcastic put downs.
Hang on a minute. Talk about panicking about nowt. Anyone could see the transformation Rosler orchestrated last season despite the fact the team had played a record number of games and were out on their feet come the end of the season. For those that went to QPR they will know that game could have gone either way and the team battled to the end. The cup run too was fantastic.Fresh season. Fresh faces. We draw at home in a disappointing performance against a team who were constantly in the top 6 all season last year then make 10 changes against lower opposition in a cup we could well do without and lose. Suddenly folk are almost calling for his head! Unbelievably fickle and short sighted. I (like many others with a brain) will reserve judgement on the current squad until at least Mid September when new faces have settled in and old faces have recovered from injuries.
I posted something similar on the ‘got out of jail’ thread last night. Lets see where we are after about 10 games. In other words, as mr bigroy said – about the end of september, early october perhaps.
We are 2 games into the season. I personally am not too bothered about the league cup, hence why i am not up in arms about it this morning.
As i said in my original post it would be harsh to judge after one game, especially the very first game of the season. In fairness, i wasn’t that impressed by the 2nd half, but so many teams struggle at the beginning of the season before they start to find their feet.
if after about 10 games we are still playing the same way, playing poor & are behind the other teams, whilst it may not be a panic situation, but by all means be a little concerned.
that goes to all of you BTW.
How loose would you like us to play leyland.
Nathan EllingtonWas going to say him myself. But where is he now???
Very dire defensively today & for carsons 2 saves we would have lost. Not sure where barnett was today, but i would have started with ramis & barnett & kiernan had it have been a back 3 from the start.
Wasnt too keen on taylor or huws & not too keen on the overall play, but it is early days. Cant really judge after the one game. They weren’t Leek fans
Shared toilets were fun too that night
Sorry Tez. That was simply a typing error. It was stoke fans.
3 – 2
14,500In the incident I’m referring to and probably Garswood to, on leaving the ground Wolves fans immediately mingled in with the Wigan crowd, selected their prey and then began their intimidation routine. There is a steady incline back to the coaches where you are not protected, its not that far so you really don’t expect any trouble.I had a middle aged chap standing on my toes and bumping into me trying to get a response. This was happening to loads of Wiganers despite age or gender. In a crowd situation this is nigh impossible to pick up on CCTV.
Their aim was to get a physical response from you and then bushak, they would wade into you claiming it to be simply protecting themselves against your aggressive behaviour.
I quickly had this sussed, so simply nibbled back without making it too obvious. My other mates were getting the same, the odd fan did react and that’s when the attacks / fighting started. It didn’t end there, as the away crowd reached the top of the hill, some geezers who looked like officials, where directing the fans down a street to the right. We could see the coaches to the left in the distance, so we ignored them and carried on. Those who took the right turn, thinking it was a safety measure to keep fans apart, were met with a possy of Wolves fans despite coppers being all over the place. It must happen regular, so why the coppers didn’t intervene god only knows.
I’m making this out to be the worst option for travel, the fans traveling by train may have missed all this, but my thinking is if it happens so close to the ground with a heavy police presence, then town centre areas must be a nightmare.
My advice is do not wear the club colours if going by train, keep a low profile especially if we win.
Hopefully these idiots may have grown out of their thuggery, although like I said, the majority looked to be between 30 and 40 years old.I’ll still be there for the game and just hope that 10 years on things have changed. :woohoo:
I had a similar experience when we played leek town in the FA Cup back in 1993/94. Walking to the ground with my uncle, his brother & father i had some bloke behind me kicking me in the back of the leg saying “come on!” I didn’t take him on as i knew what would happen so carried on walking to the ground as normal. After the game, a load of leek fans charged towards me & my uncle. I actually thought at that point i was dead, but they ran past us & headed towards a load of wigan fans.
Got to agree with the comments hereWolves away is the only ground your guaranteed trouble
Coach in and out and let the police deal with the idiots
Mate of mine got hit in the face with a sock full of pool balls last time and many on here will remember the police dogs
Is this a recent thing or something that happened in the past. I attended the university there between 1996 – 99 & lived RIGHT next door to the ground when i lived in the student halls & never saw a thing. The only time i did see a scuffle was when they played west brom once but even that was only minor.
Didn’t renew mine this season mainly cos of my shifts – between start of season to 1st jan, i can only get to 3 games & one of those is iffy. Hoping my rota is a lot kinder after the new year & if so i’ll get one of those half season ones.
