Shame he can’t play against Arsenil
Please God, let that have been a simple typo
unless leyland is meaning that arsenal won’t score.
I wonder how many people around the globe had heard of Wigan Athletic before last May despite us being in the P L for 8 seasons. The whole planet watches the Cup and our little club and our amazing triumph was the topic of conversation of football fans from every Continent even if only for a short while. That’s why to me it has to be the Cup.
I think you are underestimating how much being in the Premier League put us on the map, but I accept that the FA Cup win did it even more!
Promotions & relegations come & go but you can never ever take away a cup win.
last year f.a cup or staying in the prem, i said f.a cup, this year its got to be cup again, want that feeling again and i quite like the championship. Here here! Well said that man
….he gets caught on the ball mostly because he’s holding it, waiting for one of the statues to come to life !totally agree with you on that one as i was going to post a similar comment myself. & its a great shame the supporters can’t see that. Last night i thought he was excellent caused mainly by the “statues” singing from the same hymn sheet. Its when they are not singing from same said sheet that makes gomez appear useless, which in turn, makes the fans get on his back more than any other player in the team.
Uwe has managed 2 points on average since taking over so we would be 3rd on 78 points (one behind Burnley).& with burnley yet to play us, that would have been a cracking winner takes all game.
Oh & for me, between mcarthur & gomez for MOM. Kiernan had a solid game too IMO.
A very entertaining game & suppose a draw was a fair result from 2 attack minded teams.
TBH i’ve never ever took to alcohol & simply don’t like the taste. I don’t have a problem with it nor those who drink it.
Alex cribley had a pretty decent record too from the spot, especially during the ’87 – ’88 season i think it was. I think he finished 3rd overall out of all penalty takers from all 4 divisions that season.
Sadly john i dont drink, but i used to love the programme when it was on.
I was on prescot rd fields as i was taking charge of my sons football match yesterday & seen a bloke in a latics shirt so put 2 & 2 together when i saw your name & obviously came up with 5.
However unlike yourself i’m not from these parts originally. Born & bred wiganer but have lived up here for 10 years now.Having just watched the highlights this morning on the FLS, to be fair it was a bad penalty as he hit it at what is known as the ideal height for the keeper to save a penalty.
I’m just wondering if say for eg fortune was our regular penalty taker, would he be berated as much as senor gomez for missing 2 consecutive penalties – probably not.
Everytime i watch gomez during a game i fear for him if i’m being honest because its as though people actually want him to stuff up all the time – yet when he does an excellent defence splitting pass or some other hint of tactical genius which he is capable of (not all the time i admit, but then again name me 1 footballer who can play brilliantly for a full 90 mins), the crowd remains quiet.
I’d love nothing more than on tuesday night we are awarded a penalty & gomez steps up, smashes it in & shuts you moaning f***kers up. But, one thing about gomez (& watson for that matter) is that they never ever go hiding during a game.I suppose the run of victories had to end at some point it’s just a surprise it came against a bottom 3 side
The injuries are totting up though. Barnett,McCann and now Perch.Let’s hope the latter’s is not too serious as I’m still not sure about Rogne.
In fairness to rogne it was his 1st game for many months so he’s bound to be lacking in match practice. However, he will need to get up to speed quick if barnett is missing for a while because IMO barnett has been one of my player of the seasons (as well as the usual mr (dependable) boyce.
as for 2 points dropped against lower league opposition, don’t forget, they are fighting for their lives, similar to what we used to do for the past 8 seasons bar 1 or 2, so they’d have been up for that game last night. IMO we looked a bit tired last night & maybe a little bit of complacency had set in before a ball had even been kicked.
In that last 10 minutes alone I went through a feeling of complacency, then despair, then ecstacy, to a feeling of oh sh1t right at the end. Entertaining though.
A very good & positive article.
