• in reply to: Kone on his Wigan future. #116917

Owen Coyle speaking sense once again!

“Kone is a terrific player and I think the whole world is aware he has a clause in his contract,” Coyle told the Evening Post.

“If that’s met it would probably mean business would have to be done.

“But there has been nothing yet which has triggered that so we will have to wait and see what the news on that will be.”

“I don’t know what he’s been asked or if he’s been misquoted but the bottom line is I can understand that any player feels that they want to play at the highest level possible,” said Coyle.

“If that is to happen I know through my chat with the chairman and the chief executive that money would be reinvested in the squad and on a footballing front.

“So that’s where we are. Arouna Kone is a terrific player, there is no doubt with that but what is equally important is that fans of Wigan Athletic know that what we need next are players that want to be at Wigan Athletic. Those are the type of players we need to drive us up the league and back to the Premier League.”

“If your heart’s not in it then you won’t be the same player so what I want next year is a squad that is focused, committed and they want to be here for the right reasons,” he added.

“But I think as well players have to realise they have all played their part in the fact Wigan Athletic are in this Championship.”

in reply to: One of Coyle’s Targets Gone #116913

How do you know he was one of Coyle’s targets?

in reply to: Scott Carson #116911

If you’re not alluding to Nicholls being below standard for the Championship, then of course you’re being pernickety:

You are correct in saying Jay’s statement that Nicholl’s has proven he’s good enough for the Championship is not factually correct, but, you are just picking up on the word ‘proven’ – as it isn’t proven, it’s Jay’s opinion.

And likewise, Aidy Boothroyd doesn’t ‘know’ Nicholls is better than Foster – it’s merely his opinion.

If that’s not being pernickety, I don’t know what is!

In my opinion, I think Nicholls will be more than good enough for that level based on the standard of some of the goalkeepers already playing for clubs in the Championship.

Bloody hell you seem to have a very low pernickety threshold if you think my original post falls into that category
Of course I picked up on jayt saying he’d “proved” he was good enough coz the whole statement revolves around that word. To be honest I think if he’d also said “I think that he’s shown he could play at this level” though I’d still have the same opinion. The point is that he played in league 2, & did very well, but that level is a world away from the Championship. Doing well at that level means he’s shown he’s good enough for that level at the very least.
There’s a difference in Aidy Boothroyd saying that he “genuinely thinks Lee is as good as he (Foster) is” which is what he actually said, & him saying “Lee has shown he’s as good as Ben Foster”

The pernickety part of this thread is you accusing me of being pernickety coz I asked how Lee Nicholls has proved he is good enough for the Championship. Based on the post I originally commented on it’s a perfectly reasonable question to ask – moving on, personally some Northampton fans saying he could play for England one day isn’t the kind of evidence I need to prove anything!!

With your opinion of Lee Nicholls, I’d ask how much you know of Championship goalkeepers & how you’ve arrived at the opinion that a keeper you’ve never seen play at this level is better than them (or as good as)? Not saying I agree or disagree with you but the fact of the matter is that none of us have seen enough of Nicholls to know – I’d like to see him given a chance next season but I’ve no idea whether he’ll live up to the challenge if he was
And you wonder why I cant be arsed taking you on nowadays :silly:

in reply to: Di Santo #116908
Watson although he was not Prem standard ( Thanks for the header by the way ! ) will be above average in the Championship in my view. Both he and Gomez fit into that category and would be beneficial to our attempt at getting back to the greed league !

Thought Watson was fanatastic pre and post injury last season.

He certainly didnt look out of place in the PL.

in reply to: Loan Players – bolster the squad ? #116897

Carlton Cole is a proven striker at this level so he would be my first choice out of those but I think he is on his way to West Brom…

in reply to: Scott Carson #116892

But I agree that Nicholls proved last season that he is up this league…

Did he??? When? I thought he was on loan at Northampton Town
I’m not saying that he isn’t good enough or that he shouldn’t be given more of a chance but playing well in the 4th division does not prove you are in any way shape of form good enough for the 2nd division – Lee Butler (after a shaky start) looked a good keeper in the bottom division but I’d never have said he was good enough for the level Latics are at now
Irrespective of the league he played in you would only know if he was good enough for the step up by watching him play.

I personally didnt see him play at all last season however the Northampton fans think he will play for England one day.

Its a glowing reference from people in the know who have no reason to lie as he is not an asset of their own club.

He put in a man of the match performance for them at wembley producing a string of saves and saving a penalty all at the tender age of 20!!!

We need to give our best youngsters chances or how are we to expect them to develop into top players…

in reply to: Loan Players – bolster the squad ? #116886

Some bargain basement options…

DL – Fabio (Loan)
DR – Danny Simpson – Free
DC – Titus Bramble – Free
DC – Richard Dunne – Free
RW – David Bentley – Free
STR – Carlton Cole – Free

in reply to: Di Santo #116869

Has Di Santo been snapped up by Barcelona yet? Better be quick before Martinez comes in for him. Didn’t he say that he was good enough to be playing alongside Messi B) Notice he hasn’t come back for our other Barelonaesk player GOMEZ, who he said was as good as Iniesta

You mean Gomez who was included in the Championship Team of The Season for the one season he played in that league, and who now has played in the Premier League for three seasons?

I think we’d be better keeping hold of him.
Agreed! 12 Goals in the championship from midfield ! I will be chuffed if we get 12 goals out of any of our strikers !

in reply to: Di Santo #116867

Martinez has left and everyone on here has already got over it.

Maybe you should try getting over it too eh?!?

in reply to: Championship table #116865

That was going to be my exact comment after I seen the title thread!

in reply to: Scott Carson #116858
I’m surprised the Turks are willing to let Carson go, as it seems his form has been good. It would be a good move for us. Nicholls did well for Northampton and they loved him, but if he’s going to play for us this season, i think it should be in cup games and low risk games, against poorer performing Championship teams.

With all the games next season I am sure we will see him feature at some point popssibly in Europa depending on how serious Coyle can afford to take it.

in reply to: Full Backs that can defend #116843

To be honest I never thought Figueroa or Baines to be good defenders.

How many pictures exist of our early years in the Premier League of a goal being scored with Bainsey on the near post looking baffled, arm outstretched.

Anyone remember Chimbonda at Charlton that first season being absolutely lost as their wingers ran at him?

I have no problems with backs going forward, overlapping down the wing, or whatever. But their primary role is to keep that ball away from the goal – launching it into the proverbial row Z (I’m OK i’m in row T) if necessary.

Completely agree about Figueroa (Didnt he mostly play as a LM for Honduras before he joined us?) and Chimbonda who was always better going forward but I think Baines stats speak in volumes over the past 3 seasons and I am of the opinion he is one of the only players ever to leave us in the PL and actually take his game to another level.

Putting aside he has had the biggest fantasy football points haul out of all premier league defenders for the third season in a row , he created 116 goal scoring opportunities over the course of last season (more than any other player in the top 5 leagues in Europe) and created 8 chances in the Aston Villa game alone (last seasons PL record) He also made 92 succesful tackles last season with only 5 players in the whole of the Premier league completing more tackles.

That last statistic speaks volumes in comparison to all the CB’s, FB’s and hard tackling midfielders in the Premier League but if you look over all his defensive stats he is up there with the best despite his attacking endeavors.
Sorry Salford, I’m with Garswood on this.

I always much preferred Steve McMillan to a young Baines.

I’m sure Baines is very much improved these days, but he always looked a bit suspect when defending in my opinion.

For me, Melchiot is the most reliable out and out full back we’ve had in the Premier League.
Thats because Steve Mcmillan was class ! :woohoo:

Shame he had such a terrible time of injuries with us.

He wasnt as good defending for us as he has been for Everton, like I said I think he has gone to another level since he played for us and I just think his defensive ability is sometimes washed over due to his attacking proficiency.

I often hear “Yeah Baines is better going forward but Ashley Cole is a better defender” which is simply not true when you look at the stats between them for the past 3 years Baines comes out on top when you could consider Chelsea’s defending pedigree to be an advantage to Cole.

All in all it should be an exciting time for us from a defensive point of view as if we are being honest it is something Martinez struggled with in his time here.

I am fairly sure Martinez always wanted to play with a back four but quickly realised the players at his disposal were always up against it without the extra man in the center of defense.

He probably wanted a similar back four style to Barcelona but if you compare the likes of Alves to Boyce and Caldwell to Pique you can see where they not only struggled with a lack of mobility compare to Alves and Pique but also struggled to cope with the fact that apart from one deep midfielder they would spend the majority of the game with the rest of the team pushed too high up the pitch to have any defensive impact.

We were very suspect when teams played the counter attacking game against us take Townsend for example running faster with the ball than he would for a winning bet but if you look at all the space he had in front of him all he had to do is run in Figeuroa’s direction and say I fancy my chances against this guy.

The same player with the same pace would have took one look at Puyol or Pique and hesitated.

I think if Coyle can get a solid back four with the type of Full back’s that Garswood mentioned i.e. can go forward but are defensively responsible after their own forward runs then there is enough creativity with the likes of Mcmanaman, Gomez, Maloney, Beausajor to create a very good balance.

in reply to: Poyet #116836

You’re all assuming Poyet would actually want the Wigan job….

Coyle is here now and of what he can he has done a good job.

No doubt if we have no signings by the end of the week a few on here will be looking to set up the gallows.

The rumour I have heard is Poyet and the Brighton heirarchy have been falling out all season for a number of reasons and they have sacked him because he took some pictures off the wall from their promotion season that Poyet maintains is his property.

I give it a rumour rating of 2/10 but there it is.
