Unbelieveable what has gone on at Pompey, they’ve recieved something like £100m in transfer fees and yet have debts of £120m……some absolutely crazy financial decisions been made at that club
For “crazy” read “crooked”
Whelan, meanwhile, has reiterated his plea for Premier League sides to get their finances in order, and revealed his plans to reduce Wigan’s debt by two-thirds.
“I have been saying for a long time there should be a limit on the size of club’s liabilities and debts – including Wigan Athletic,” he added.
“The club owes me quite a lot of money, because of loans I have lent it. What I am doing is converting those loans into equity and taking shares.
“It’s a debt-for-equity swap, and I would advocate every club in the country looking into doing that.
“Wigan will be doing that, which will wipe out around two-thirds of our debt. It’s one way of cleaning up a lot of balance sheets in football.”
Above quote from today’s WEP.
Say what you like about DW (and frankly he won’t care) I’ll bet most clubs in the League, and especially Portsmouth, would love to have a Chairman saying those sort of things.
I’m not being sycophantic in this – but I like the sentiment behind this. Loans as equity means he is only owed proportional to the value of the club, and therefore is intrinsically tied into seeing the club being successful, while at the same time not demanding cash back.
If we only get a point against West Ham we’ll be on 36.
Oh aye. Lost the ability to read numbers and write them down. Then again, I am absolutely convinced that I have numerical dyslexia, so that should come as no surprise really.
If you’re dyscalculic ( ;) ) then are we sure it’s 33-1??

That’s fine if you have an adjustable satellite.

He’ll finish up at Young Boys Berne, you watch – he just looks the type :shock:What about Young Fellows Zurich? A far better class of chap albeit in a lower league ;)
Where’s Garswood when you need him?At work, actually – but on lunch.

Each day i go to the cashpoint i am optimistic that it will display a balance of 24 million pounds,
Not a good analogy. We are in a position of being above Hull ebven if we lose that game – it’s other games as well that will determine the final outcome.
A better analogy is that I’m optimistic I won’t be in the red.
Also, for the shallow-minded footballer, lifestyle-wise, London is quite possibly a bigger draw than Wigan
We’re near enough to Manchester though. Not exactly Hull or Stoke are we?
Do you think he’ll spit his dummy and not appear for us again?
My comment at the beginning of this thread.
I was making no judgements – just posing a question.
A bride on her wedding night says to her new husband “I have a confession, I used to be a hooker”
“Actually, I find that a bit erotic – tell me more” he says.
“Well” she replied “my name was Nigel and I played for Castleford”I thought he was Boycey for the first half hour :?Thanks for posting that. Because I spent the first half hour trying to remember his name – you know that thing where you go through the alphabet in the vague hope it’ll come to you… :?
You can always tell him if you want.

Fair play to him for having a “Guest Book”.But….I’m just lost for words at his “autograph card”    :o

Booing your own team’s ineptitude – not just for “soccer” ;)
Do you think he’ll spit his dummy and not appear for us again?
And for James to note – there was cheering at the DW tonight…. when that board was held up.
Straight down the tunnel he went. A legend in his own mind.
Yeah…Insulting our longest serving player and cheering his exit. Great. Have a bad game and latics fans hate you… No wonder people don’t want to sign and no wonder players want to leave.

Very busy today and was intending to make a brief visit to comment on one topic. I have read just two posts; Garswood’s and JamesC’s.
I spent the whole of the time in the period between the team being announced and kick-off bemoaning the fact that Scharner had been picked.
I spent the whole of the time between kick-off and his substitution praying he would be taken off.
I spent the rest of the game slagging off our support for a disgraceful and childish show of disrespect to one of our longest serving players – however poor we (I) may think he has been over the last few months, that was a shocking display.
We are comfortably the worst set of fans in the country. Apart from a valiant effort from the kids in the north-east corner, it was the usual moaning and groaning and know-nowt comments. Almost not surprising that our pampered prima donna players couldn’t be bothered putting in any effort.
Garswood – I’ms surprised at you, but you are entitled to your view of course.
JamesC – ring the date in the diary. I agree with you 100% :)
Not quite sure what you’re surprised at.
Let’s look at this logically. What is football? No – stay with me on this one.
For the vast bulk of the time and vast bulk of levels it’s a past-time that gets people out into the fresh air with a bit of healthy exercise. That’s why you would not heckle abuse at someone playing in the local park, or on a school-field. It exists for the participants.
But that’s not what we’re talking about here – there is another level – professional football, and in particular the Premier League. That does not exist for the health and well-being of the participants – it is part of the entertainment industry. It is a business like any other. We are the customers, the clubs are the service providers.
If a cowboy builder comes along and botches a job that you’ve paid for – do you say to him “well done” in case he gets a bit upset.
If you take your car to the garage and it breaks down 100 yards from the exit, do you go and give words of encouragement?
If a painter comes in and leaves half the wall unpainted do you shrug your shoulders and call him back in again next week without saying anything abotu the poor job, in case he decides not to try again.
If I don’t do my job properly, the job that I am being paid for, I expect to be pulled up about it, be told that this just isn’t good enough.
The way football fans can do that is by showing dissent. I’m not making a judgement here whether in any particular situation, last night or otherwise, that was correct or justified. But it is a right that supporters have – that the paying customer has – and the recipients of that criticism need to do something about it to rectify the impression that they are not doing their job that we are paying for.
And if their attitude is that people aren’t happy with what I’m doing, so stuff ’em, I’ll not bother, tells its own story.
