Out of interest, is this the longest thread in the history of cockney latic.
For the record, im joining the club & not posting on this thread anymore either. ;)
Welcome to the club
Not once.
And no, I’m not going to post on this thread again.
If as you say standish he was promised the EFC job around feb/march, that would have been around the same time as our already expected decline from the premier league, but also had just won our place in the FA cup quarter finals. Now im never ever going to dispute our magical day in may. But it would appear he put all his egs in the one basket where the FA cup was concerned to make himself look good for the EFC job & to give deluded scousers false hope of his champions league promise within 3 years.Like yourself i want our past players, managers etc to do well when they move on. But only when they leave on good terms which doesn’t put the club/team in any manure.
Anyhow standish. I thought you were not posting on here again. You keep coming back, so you must love this thread! ;)
I started hearing the rumours about this around the time of the Everton game – but I’d say the performance against Everton that day was more due to players seeing a cup semi final just over the hill than any tactical masterclass by Martinez.
They just wanted it more than Everton did.
And likewise in the final.
Couldn’t agree more Donny, Mr Jewell was the best ever manager imo.
But I did like Ray Mathias..Bob seemed to change his tac tics at 28 games when he knew we were in the s***.. The last ten games were always good to watch under Bobs tenure.
Had he have played that way during those 10 games throughout his 3 years, it would have been a pleasure rather than a chore. I am also not disputing that magical, historical day he brought us in may ’13.
But, lets say for arguments sake our 1st season back in the championship was under bobs tenure. He decided to stay for 1 more season out of a loyalty thing to try & get us back up, but failed against QPR in the play-offs. Fine at least he tried to get us up but sadly failed. He would have gone with my blessing. Had he have kept us up in the premier league & turned round saying “Ive taken this club as far as i can, time for a new challenge.” That is also fine in my book.
But, i cant understand how some on here still hold him with high regard after relegating us. & its not an anti martinez rant. I would be saying the same thing had bruce or god forbid jewell relegated us then left at the 1st chance.
I hold him in high regard because of the reasons I stated earlier, plus I liked him as a player. My preferences.I’d have liked him to do well elsewhere because I like all our ex-players / ex-managers etc to do well if they’ve gone to a bigger club as it reflects well on Wigan.
However, if he doesn’t do well and gets sacked. Never mind. I won’t lose sleep over it. I certainly don’t read articles about him and Everton or watch interviews with him.
And he was never going to stay another season as the Everton job had been his since around February or March. Us being relegated wasn’t part of the plan, and had he stayed another season the Everton job would have gone.
And that’s the bit I don’t get.
Were people honestly expecting him to stay out of loyalty, when there was a chance to double his salary and move to a bigger club?
I really don’t give a monkey’s what Martinez has said in the press or whether it is right or wrong.
He’s talking about Everton, not Wigan Athletic, so it doesn’t interest me.
He hasn’t been our manager for three years, and we’ve (well some of us have) moved on.
I’m grateful for the FA Cup. And I’m grateful for the wins against Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City, Everton, Chelsea, Stoke on the last day of season, the battering of Newcastle at the DW, the win at Blackburn, and the amazing run of games to trigger The Great Escape. I’m I’m also grateful that he was a mentor to Caldwell, and has had an indirect influence on how the team currently play.
But without this thread, I wouldn’t dicuss the virtues of Martinez at all.
And no, I’m not going to post on this thread any longer…
JOG ON, THEN; Standish Walker
Decent article, even though the writer thinks Wildschut is still on loan from Middlesbrough.
