Early season – Scott Carson
Mid season – James McClean
Late season – The guy who scores the winner against Fulham, Rotherham and BrightonWith the fixtures we have left, the chance to stay up is ours for the taking. Thankfully most of the crunch games are away, but we need to start picking points up at home.
Sadly though, I think after the first mis-laid pass on Saturday the chorus of booooo will ring out and we’ll be back to square one.
All the passion but no ability.
Earlier in the season it was the other way around.
No matter what may have gone after, he is still a legend for this:
They disappeared off the footballing map when Tom Finney hung up his bootsWho? ;)
I reckon the Geordies would show up in numbers.
Only chance they’ll have of seeing their side win something at Wembley
Meanwhile, over at Weepdale the fans add their two penneth!

For a club that have spent 25 of my 39 years on this earth in the bottom 2 divisions of the football league and haven’t graced the top flight for over half a century they have some front for banging on about how Latics are now “going back” to our “rightful place in the lower leagues”
Although I guess its a subject that they are all something of an expert in
Another of those clubs who believe they’re owed something because of their history.
Thank you Dave
Still according to the official site over 2000 die hards making the trip though which aint bad considering
Its a 40 mile trip to Blackpool FFS.
And yet is still further than most RL away games.
Facts are that a lot of the crowd are showing up for the tripe on offer because they bought their ST on the back of a relatively successful campaign last season. Now, if you could take off your Arsene-Wenger Rose-Tinted specs for a moment and consider the following:Even if you stay up, what is there to persuade people to shell out for a ST next season?
(GL – As an HR Bod, think “Employee Engagement”, and exactly how long a company can rely on blind loyalty from its workforce whilst shafting them with T&C)
And quite a lot will have bought one because they’re a Wigan Athletic fan and don’t switch club at the first possibility. We’re slowly weeding the JCL’s and glory hunters out and will at the start of next season know our ‘hardcore’ support. I’ll bet this is higher than last time we were in the third tier.
Still according to the official site over 2000 die hards making the trip though which aint bad consideringDefinitely not no.
A lot of people renewed their ST for this season on the back of a narrow play-off exit and an FA Cup semi-final defeat after a magnificent defence of the trophy. Even so, average crowds this season have slipped almost 20% to 12410 from last seasons’ 15176.
Even if you do stay up, what is there to persuade them to renew for next season?
If you’re insinuating fickle fans Mutty, you really are skating on very thin ice, so seeing as you like figures so much.
Wigan RL Timeline:
* Between 1976 and 1984 the average attendance is 5,579
* Wigan RL win the challenge cup in 1984 and their ‘Golden Era’ begins
* Between 1984 and 1998 average attendance is 12,741 ( 139% increase)
* In 1999 Wigan RL win nothing for the first time in 15 years. The average attendance that season is 9,239 (27% decrease because they had the audacity not to win something)
* St Helens and Bradford dominate Super League 2000 – 2009. Average attendance is 12,768
* Wigan win Super League in 2010.
* Average attendance in the more successful 2010 – present era is 15,307 (20% increase)
Seems it’s not just a Latics thing after all.
The 1999 attendance was due to it being the last season at Central Park and some fans boycotting.
Crowds at The DW were slow to pick up even though in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 we either won a trophy or reached a final.
Crowds increased from around the mid-point of 2006 when it looked like we would be relegated and have increased since. The average home (home fans only) gate is around 12000 but should rise this year with more big games involved.
Latics average home attendance has ranged from 15000 to 12000 recently and last year beat the rugby average by 1000.
Both clubs have their out of towners and both clubs have their Wigan born and breds.
Now back onto the topic…..
…I’ve been surprised at how strong our attendances have been considering the shit on show. Failing to sell out for tomorrow is a big indication that people are fed up though I think.
How can you tell from that?Yes, linesmen make mistakes and if they do it’s usually marginal but how can someone sat in the stands, even if they are in line with the incident, claim to see these things any better?
The only thing this clip shows with any kind of certainty is that Pennant clearly fouls Maguire in the run up to the goal.
Well for the first one, pausing it when it hits Fortune’s head and then drawing a line parallel with the pitch from the defender to McClean will help ;)
Second one is impossible to tell as I said.
Fine. Well do us all a favour and fuck off and watch a spectacle that’s more pleasing to ya then. ‘To be honest I wanted to go to see how bad they really were and they didn’t disappoint’. Make your mind up. Yesterday your mate dragged you out out on a freebie when you wanted to watch ITV. What did you expect? Fuckin champagne football from the worst performing team in our history? What kind of prick comes on here trying to piss everyone off telling us how bad we are? We all fuckin know how bad we are. FFS. Some of us go every week not just when we get a free ticket off a mate.Really? You sure?
Made two saves by my counting.
Two! Wow! That’s a keeper kept on his toes is that!
He was tested more than our goalkeeper was

Why don’t they just say they will be watching City v Barcelona on the box.
I’m very tempted to stay at home and do that! ;)
Did you get the best of both worlds in the end?
