Unfortunately the “well nobody has ever used that phrase to describe themselves before” is hardly the most convincing argument around. All words & phrases originate somewhere
At the end of the day it is grammatically acceptable & (more importantly) it fits in with the song far better than “winners”

The reason why nobody has used it is a perfectly good argument though. It isn’t true. We are not the Champions of the FA Cup. We are the winners of the FA Cup.

Did Liverpool and Man Utd trade “Championees Championees” chants in 2001 when one won the cup and the other won the league? No, because Liverpool were the cup winners not the champions.

The club have produced a t-shirt with it on now and it still doesn’t make it true just like my belly would not be the fuel tank for a sex machine should I purchase one of those t-shirts from Benidorm.

I’ve read sporadic posts about the ‘FA Cup Champions’ song and the arguments as to whether or not it is correct. I see myself as being a bit of a pedant as far as use of the great English language is concerned, and I must say that, on balance and on points, I agree with the great unwashed that ‘FA Cup Champions’ is correct as far as carrying vocal weight to opposing fans and self satisfaction is concerned. Though not of lingual perfection, ‘Champions’ conveys the warmth, gravity, and the syllables, that ‘Winners’ and ‘Holders’ do not.

The latter are not certainly incorrect, in a lingual sense, but lack considerably in comparison to the former as far as singability is concerned.

My point being, no other club in the 142 year history of the FA Cup has ever referred to themselves as FA Cup champions, literally correct or not! No more to say on the subject – it’s been done to death, and I’m sure we’re all bored to tears with it.

However, your comment about warmth and gravity is the biggest load of cheesy, luvvie, thespian bullshit I have ever seen written on this forum ;)
The Champions thing really gets on my nerves as well. The massive boards the players celebrated in front of last year tell you exactly what we are.

It made me laugh in 2009 when Warrington rugby fans would refer to themselves as the Challenge Cup Champions. They even claimed to have won the double in 2010 after winning it again, I put that down to their lack of an actual championship win since 1953 and the old small club mentality. Sadly, we seem to be doing the exact same thing.

          FA Cup.

First lower division side to win it since 1980 and the first to defend the trophy since the 50s I believe.

Sir Andrew Liddell scored a free kick from a seemingly impossible angle IIRC

Uwe has managed 2 points on average since taking over so we would be 3rd on 78 points (one behind Burnley).

& with burnley yet to play us, that would have been a cracking winner takes all game.
I think we’d have had a longer league cup run and longer European run though so who knows how that would have affected our league form?

I’ll take going up in the playoffs.

I just thought that we should have carried on pushing at 2-1 as they were well on the ropes and I felt that taking Powell off ( For obvious reasons of shutting up shop ) was maybe a mistake and the Gomez substitution although backing up the shutting up shop theory was also puzzling! I have sort of contradicted myself there but what I am saying is, we could have got another if we had just kept on pressing !

Gomez had been booked and was late a few times without making contact with the man. Had to come off before he was sent off.

Great performance and should have really had all 3 points. James McArthur was MOM for me I think.

Just read Arsenal have been given more tickets!

30k turn out for the parade 15k to Wembley the year after? I blame Coyle

30K turn out for the parade. 13k actually attend games. I blame glory grabbing.

I want 3 points but wouldn’t be too down if we got a draw as it would be a good result all things considered.

I think the fact the Bolton player was running towards the corner and not towards goal saved Barnett, however I don’t even think it was a foul. Was Leon supposed to disappear or change his run just incase their feet clipped one another? Total accident as opposed to a malicous act like the Waghorn one on Ream for example.

Got to say, that like many of us, I can’t claim to be an immediate fan of Jordi Gomez. However, I think his application is far better under Uwe than it ever was under Roberto ( maybe too much of a “friend” thing going on there ); hence I would like to see him stay.

Or maybe it’s because under Martinez he was playing in the Premier League and under Rosler he’s playing in the Championship?
Don’t let that get in the way of the chance to have a pop at Martinez though.

Bit harsh on Jordi. Was a top save from Bogdan.

As others have said I think it would have been daylight robbery had we won that one. Happy with a point.

Automatic is still mathematically possible with our games in hand and still to play Burnley but I can’t see them dropping 7 points and us not dropping any. I’d be happy with top 4 and a home second leg.
