Watson in double leg fracture heartbreak
Wigan Athletic can confirm the news that midfielder Ben Watson has broken his leg following an accidental collision during last night’s 2-0 Sky Bet Championship victory over Barnsley and is likely to miss the remainder of the season.
The incident came in the 15th minute, when he went in for a 50-50 tackle with Barnsley’s Martin Woods. Following lengthy treatment on the pitch, he was carried off the field on a stretcher and immediately taken to Wigan Infirmary.
Latics manager Uwe Rosler said directly after the match that he did not wish to speculate until the full extent of the injury was known.
The club can now confirm that there is a double fracture to the fibula and tibia bone in Watson’s right leg and he will undergo surgery as soon as possible. It is the same leg which he broke in a match at Liverpool in November 2012, but not in the same place and is not considered career-threatening.
Rosler said: “Until everything was confirmed, we did not want to go on the record but we have now had time to make a good assessment.
“Ben will receive the best possible treatment and we will do everything to help him make a speedy recovery. He is a terrific professional, a fighter, and I am sure he will return from this latest setback like he did a year ago when he went on to experience the high of scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup Final at Wembley, and write himself into the heart of every Wigan Athletic supporter.
“To lose a player and a person of Ben’s quality is a big blow to us but we will re-group and move on as a squad and keep trying to achieve our goals for the season, with the added incentive now of doing it for Ben.”
