I seem to remember him missing one but can’t for the life of me remember who against
Bryan Griffiths was the king of the penalty takers – think he only missed one during his time with us
Honourable mention too to Roy Carroll for being king of the penalty savers
15 December 2010 at 11:56 am in reply to: Never heard of us been compared to a spider in a bath? #53260I think its called begrudging respect for what the club has achieved despite no-one liking or caring about us either inside or outside of Wigan
Its a bit patronising in parts but also acknowledges the godo bits we’ve had too
Some of their info is a little wayward mind:
“From Northern leagues to premier league in 10 years” – I wasn’t aware that Div4, div3, league 2 was a league purely for northern teams!!
and i wouldn’t exactly say that the club’s “pre-Xmas fat reserves kept us from the grubby paws of the bottom 3” considering we finished 10thWigmon – I think the Israeli death threats to Zaki came when he turned down a move to Pompey last season on the grounds that the club was “too jewish”- and he went into quite an in-depth rant about it too
Of course Bob is testing our patience at the moment but I believe we will come out of this an more exciting and successful team – within limits. If it means relegation that’s the way it goes.
Do you really believe we will come out more successful under Martinez?
In the 18 months or so he has been in charge we have gone backwards. Never since we have been in the Prem have we looked as lost for ideas when going forward. Under Bruce we looked like we could have sneaked into a European place if we could have kept hold of our better playersWhether we come out of it more successful or not, I would not want Sam Allardyce at our club.
If Bob was to go, there are far better alternatives out there.
Personal opinion but I would be interested to know how many tried & tested premier league managers there are available out there with a track record for progressing their club’s on a shoe string budget
Quite how anybody can say this:
“Of course Bob is testing our patience at the moment but I believe we will come out of this an more exciting and successful team”
then this:
“If you seriously want Allardyce you know nothing about football.”
and finally this:
“Blinkers off”
and keep a straight face is beyond me
Personally I don’t think Bobby’s style of play had that much to do with Whelan choosing him as manager
I don’t think Bobby will sack Whelan & I think Allardyce would only come if Latics were the only other top flight option but in reply to the “Big Sam for Bob anyone??” question that started the thread – for me its yes please & the sooner the better
Just you’re opinion though, isn’t it?The thing is, having picked Martinez partly because he promised a new philosophy of playing the game – whether you agree with it or not – to then go for Allardyce takes you to the completely opposite end of the spectrum, further on than Bruce ever was.
Anyway, as the media seems to think that Allardyce is God, I fully expect him to turn up his nose at Wigan, even if offered, and to show up very soon at West Ham.
Yes it is just my opinion. That’s why i said “that I’ve paid to watch” & i fully admit to not paying to watch it anywhere near as much as I used to
I would also have no problem going for Bobby’s philosophy to the other end of the spectrum because at a club like Latics & in the division we are in, Bobby’s philosophy (IMO) will never work
You could argue that the players would have to adapt to a completely different style of play, but IMO the majority of em have never adapted to Bobby’s style of play coz many of em aren’t suited to it so I don’t think that would be a problemYou’re probably right about the last bit but I think it’d all depend on what other offers there were on the table. I can’t imagine West Ham going for him to be honest – their fans, of which Sullivan & Gold are 2 of em, buy hook line & sinker into that Academy of football rubbish that the media spouts about West Ham so I just can’t see em going for Allardyce & his acquired taste style of football as successful as it seems to be
Lose on Saturday and the answer is yes.
If we win, he’s got until the Bolton game (5th Jan) to get us up that league.
You would honestly pay money to watch the shyte dished up by Fat Sam?
Some of the biggest $h!te I’ve paid to watch at Latics has been served up under Bobby.
Slow, plodding, tepid, gutless, low scoring, high conceding & boring rubbish on the wholeI would have Sam Allardyce here in an instant over our current incumbent
14 December 2010 at 12:07 pm in reply to: Big Brother does not like it when the tables are turned! #53208I would imagine that the money put back into the country & economy by graduates in terms of taxes & NI on their salaries and general spending far outweighs a completely guessed at amount of how much money is brought into the country by tourists who are here specifically because of the royal family – its not as if any of them actually expect to see or meet a member of the royal family, the buildings & all their opulance would be there regardless of whether the royals still existed or not & I don’t see the lack of a royal family having any impact whatsoever on the tourism of our neighbours in France
You’re living in cloud cuckoo land if you don’t think that the daft Japs and Yanks attracted by our pomp and circumstance don’t view the royal family as being the major part of all that palavar.
And France might just have some climate-related benefits that we don’t have in this country.
I don’t doubt for one minute that “some” tourists come to the UK because of our royal family – how many come purely for that reason & how many would have come anyway for other reasons is complete guess work so how anybody can equate it to the royal family bringing in “billions” every year is completely beyond me
In my 35 years on this earth I’ve met plenty of tourists in the UK from all over the world and whilst I aint claiming for one minute that they were indicative of all foreign tourists in the country, not one of them has said they were here because of the royal family. In fact the amount of public events that form part of the pomp & circumstance you talk about which directly involve major members of the royal family is miniscule. If they visit say Buckingham Palace whilst they’re here they don’t do it coz they think they might see the Queen they do so coz its a big opulent building full of riches – just like the palace of Versaille which people visit even though the French royal family has been gone for over 200 yearsreturning to France – the southern part of the country may well have climate benefits we don’t have but Paris by & large doesn’t & that’s full of tourists. Likewise Brittany & Normandy

i can’t see Bobby taking a chance with the young lad Mustoe so I assume (like the post above) that he’ll switch Gohouri to left back (where he played a full game against can’t remember who & where he played the last 15 minutes or so against Stoke) & play Stam at right back
Although Sky’s highlights mentioned Cleverley had gone off with a rib injury at half-time on Saturday so if he isn’t fit then it leaves us with a bit of a hole to fill down the wing too – I assume he’d stick Rodallega out on the flank & bring Boselli back up front
well seeing it wont be on in pubs
ill have to go again ;)At least now that the BBC show the football league highlights straight after MOTD we won’t have to stay up till 3am on a Tuesday morning to watch Endsleigh League Extra where Latics were pretty much always one of the last 2 or 3 teams on it seeing as how we were down in the bottom 3 or 4 of the 4th division
At least as I was a student at the time I didn’t need to get up for work in the morning!!
I think Latics will stay up by the skin of their teeth but I don’t think the club will ever improve under Bobby
He’s had long enough in the job to show he’s adaptable & able to learn from his mistakes but for me he just hasn’t done that. nor does he seem to know how to get the best out of the group of players that he does have
Since he took over Wigan Athletic have become a laughing stock. Under Bruce, Huchings and Jewell we had everyone on our side (excluding the media, ‘the odds’ and the Taliban.)
All I can say is …
4-0 Blackpool
5-0 Man U
4-1 Blackpool
6-0 Chelsea
4-0 Arsenal
9-1 Spurs
4-0 Bolton
8-0 Chelsea
5-0 Man U
2-0 Notts County
1-0 Wolves
3-1 West Ham
3-0 Man City
3-2 BirminghamAnd I see:
2-0 Aston Villa
3-1 Chelsea
3-1 Burnley
2-0 Wolves
1-0 Liverpool
3-2 Arsenal
4-1 Hull City
3-1 Dundee United
1-0 TottenhamBut hey ho
Bloody hell Willy Wombat you’re scraping the barrel a bit using victories in pre-season friendlies, an FA Cup game in which it was reserve side v reserve side against a team who eventually got relegated, a victory away at a team who got relegated & who were well on top until their keeper got injured & an away victory against relegation rivals (I’m assuming you’re referring to the 2-0 away victory at Wolves rather than the 2-0 home victory against the 10 men of the same club)
So in my books victories in isolated games against Villa (who we had only lost against once previously), Chelsea (who wound up with 9 men), Liverpool & Arsenal (where we were dire for 80 minutes) don’t really make up for the kickings highlighted in the original post from Sephton1 or the dreary rubbish we’ve been served in the majority of the other games under Bobby – although i would take out the defeat away at City (where we looked pretty decent untl we went down to 10 men) from his list
Like you say Swindon we each have different opinions
When I said what I did about Gomez I wasn’t judging him as such but I was very wary as to whether he would be effective – although to be fair I was also very wary about us signing McCarthy, MacArthur, Gary Caldwell (as Scottish football is of such poor quality), Moses, Diame, Di Santo, Boselli, Gohouri, Amaya, Scotland, Sinclair, S Caldwell & Moreno. All in all, pretty much everyone he’s signed with the exception of Alcaraz, Stam, Al Habsi & Cleverley so me having doubts about Gomez’s ability & being proved right is mroe down to me thinking it about all our signings really than about any great footballing knowledge!!!
Going back to the good signings outweighing his duff ones – I think just going through that list re-affrims my belief as I would say that only really McCarthy & Gohouri & Diame can be classed as non-duds, although Diame has the ability to look like a superstar & a duffer in the course of the same match.
If you say you can’t pass judgement on Boselli & Di Santo as duds coz they aint been here long enough then you can’t pass judgements on the likes of MacArthur, S Caldwell, Alcaraz, Al Habsi, Stam & Cleverley one way or the other either for the same reasons
Of the remaining ones I don’t think Bobby has given Moses anywhere near enough game time for him to be classed as a success whilst G Caldwell, Amaya, Scotland, Sinclair & Moreno were all poor so I make that 5-3 in favour of the duds
Add the newbies in & it becomes IMO 7-6 to the duds & I’m undecided on Stam (looks good going forward & poor in defence)
So there you have it a very scientific study showing I’m right ;)Actually I’ve just seen you said its far to early to judge Boselli & Di Santo yet you include them both in your list of “excellent” signings. How does that work??? ;) Not sure how you can include a bloke in McArthur on there either as his run outs have involved a couple of sub appearances & some carling cup games (one of which he was taken off at half time in!!!)
I think our problems run deeper than not having that link man
That is a problem admittedly but the whole sides movement off the ball is far too slow & predictable for Bobby’s slow methodical play on the ball to be a success.
The defence needs to stop switching off & conceding some of the softest goals I’ve seen in my 20 odd years of watching Latics
The midfield (& not just one man in the hole) needs to push up much quicker in support of the front man than they do at present
The wingers need to learn to act as a second centre forward when the ball is being moved up on the opposite flank insteadd of staying out on the wing
The midfield needs to drop back in support of the defence much quicker than it does at present (considering they don’t push up in support of the attack its amazing how many times our defenders can be outnumbered by the opposition coz the midfield isn’t tracking back)
They need to mix up styles of play alot more than they do at present
None of the above would be solved simply by putting Lionel Messi “in the hole”Come on Swindon any top flight manager worth his salt should have know just by looking at them that the 2 Caldwell’s & Jordi Gomez weren’t quick enough for premier league football
Likewise if you spend the best part of 6 months to a year scouting 2 Argentinian centre forwards you should be able to tell from that whether they are capable of playing up front on his own
Its either poor scouting or poor managerial judgement
Did anyone really need to see the 31 year old scottish & lower english league journey man centre forward Jason Scotland to know that he’d struggle in the top flight??
And that’s the problem its not just 2 or 3 duff signings. His duff signings have (IMO) outweighed his good uns so to claim he’s got rid of the deadwood when in actual fact I think he’s made the squad weaker – as has been shown by our lack of options in the face of a few injury & suspension problems recently
