All I can say is that living 230 miles from Wigan has its benefits coz at least I don’t have to watch that garbage every week

Colin Bell would out run and out last a vast majority of todays players if it was possible to test the theory.

I’d disagree with that & I’ve heard & seen a lot of pro’s from that era say that they couldn’t last in today’s game if they had the same prep methods & away from the club fitness.
Don’t get me wrong if Colin bell was playing now he’d be training as a pro does today & would look just as good but fitness wise & burst of speed wise they wouldn’t be at the level of today’s players based on yesterday’s methods. Skill wise yes but not fitness wise

It’s similar to top sprinters – Jesse Owens was the best of his era but his times aren’t close to Usain Bolt coz training & fitness methods have moved on so much (and their running shoes & the track itself).

I’d agree with the rest of what you say though. I don;t have a problem with wing backs but its a very specialist position. Martinez wanted to play it for ages by all accounts before he finally brought it in at Latics & that only really came when he signed Beausejour who had it mastered.
Manager’s need to realise that coz a full back is quite good going forward doesn’t make him a wing back & vice versa with wingers. Play the best system to suit the players at your disposal

I was particularly disappointed in PC’s post-match comments that Massie and Jacobs tired rapidly. I didn’t particularly notice, so I can only assume he gets that info from the men with the iPads.

I grew up watching teams managed by the likes of Shankly, Busby, Clough, Revie. If you’d told Shankly some of his players were tiring he’d say “Good, so they should. Why aren’t the others?” Managers like that didn’t need tracking monitors and fancy graphs and charts. They saw, and made judgements on what they saw.

Even if a player is almost out on his feet, when he suddenly gets that chance to sprint away then he should still be able to do that. That’s what fitness training is all about, isn’t it?

When was the last time you saw a Latics player come off the field covered in sweat?

I didn’t see the game so can’t comment on how Jacobs & Massey looked but to play devil’s advocate, maybe you didn’t notice & maybe most others didn’t but maybe a professional football manager & his assts did
Or maybe he picked up on something & when both came off they said they were dead on their feet
Yes they should be able to last the full 90 minutes but maybe one (having just come back from a relatvely lengthy injury) wasn’t quite as match fit as he thought & maybe the other one was carrying a slight knock beforehand which meant he tired more quickly

And Shankly & co may have chucked the sports science gear out of the window but they also used to let their players eat rubbish, go out on the lash & smoke fags. As good as them old teams may have been for their era, in terms of physical fitness they couldn’t hold a candle to the top modern day teams

It’s possible the guy may just take the club and ground as payment for what he’s owed.
Did this fella actually put much in in the first place to be owed so much by Oyston?
There will be a cracking crowd for their next game Oyston free.

Exactly – which was one of the points Jordan was making. Not sure how much he put in but the rift seemed to come quite suddenly between them.
I used to know someone who worked quite high up at Blackpool and he told me some proper horror stories about how it was being run quite some time before it came public

On the plus side from the noises he’s making & appointments he’s making the receiver seems to have the intent of keeping the club going rather than asset stripping it to get that guy his money

in reply to: Donkey Lashers #176666

I was listening to that utter arse Simon Jordan on TalkSport the other week when the court case found in favour of the other guys case

Jordan was saying that whilst they’re no doubt glad to see the back of Oyston, the Blackpool fans shouldn’t celebrate to early – can’t remember what state they’ve been put in (receivership or administration) but said not only do they have the possibility of a points deduction but the Lithuanian/Latvia guy has gone down this route to get back the money he is owed & not some valiant crusade on behalf of the supporters
With that in mind, the only way he’ll get his money is by selling off all or most of their assets of any value which is obviously players, stadium, training ground or whatever
Now an arse he may be but he knows his onions about club ownership and administration/receivership having been involved twice and he said he couldn’t see any way it would end well for the supporters
I hope he’s wrong

I’ve said it all along, Cook will always side with age and experience and will not try youth. His age policy on players he signs “then plays” says it all. It’s as though he’s sh!tty pants scared of taking a chance on a kid. If your good enough age means jack sh1t
If were safe in the League I can see Cook bringing him on in the 89th against Millwall

Cook’s alredy said that he won’t blood any of the promising youngsters this season until we’re mathematically safe so you;re spot on with your assessment

Dross…..huff and puff with absolutely zero end product. Clarke !….well no better than 1st time round.Leading the line, never won a header, lay off or flick on. Is he really the best we could muster up ???…..Reading win,so did Bolton and on the evidence of the last 2 games it really will be a close shave as to which league we play in next season. Please can anyone really see any positives after that against a really poor Stoke side ???

I think you were watching a different player to me coz Clarke won virtually eveything in the air. I lost count of the number of times he flicked it on & there wasn’t a Latics player within 20 yards of him to be able to feed off it
Now that either means they can;t read that’s what he’s going to do, they’re told to stay deep & wide or Clarke can’t realise he needs to hold it up

Overall i thought our build up play was quite good but the end product was dreadful. The defence went in to panic mode all to often with the ball at their feet & all 4 were guilty of numerous scuffed & fluffed clearances

in reply to: Total Football #176285

I thought it was a well deserved point against a Stoke team littered with valuable players.
My only gripe was Clarke, for me he’s just not good enough. I thought that first time round and nothings changed my mind now.

Out of a Vaughan, Garner and Clarke, Clarke would be my 3rd choice. God knows why Vaughan left for him

All eaqually ineffective without a strike partner. They have all had their best times when playing in a two up top formation.
Why all three were signed when we never play that way is baffling.
I’d disagree slightly with that – from last night’s game Clarke is very effective at winning the ball that is played out from the back.
Problem is that whilst he wins it virtually every time, he’s a “flick on” man & not a hold up person & our other attacking players are either too dumb to read that or are instructed to stay deep & wide so his efforts in winning the ball are wasted
As for Garner, from the brief bits I’ve seen of him he is utter pigswill

Average working wages weren’t that low back then even if I was a lazy arse student at the time so I don’t think Latics were paying that low (& in Alan Johnson’s time I’m talking 1992/1993ish)
This link takes you to some averages:
http://www.sportingintelligence.com/2011/10/30/revealed-official-english-football-wage-figures-for-the-past-25-years-301002/
So in the time I’m thinking of the £18k for div 3/div 2/lge 1 as were in 92/93 seems about reet

in reply to: Total Football #176246

Okay, okay I was one with a bucket, when I say bad times I mean losing every other game, not the position we are in the football league.
No doubt some on here would have topped themselves watching us flounder under Bill Kenyon.

I can understand the young fans having a moan, but looking at the user names these are older fans with obviously short memories.

I remember the Kenyon days very well. But we were paying players £200 pw then. We had players like Ronnie Hildersley, David Fairclough, has beens. We had a fair share of never will be’s as well. Richard Brolly, Johnny Magee…probably cant even remember him. There were countless others.

I did like Phil Daley though. Considering we signed him from Neston, he actually did a very good job for us. There was a time when players who hadnt quite made it at Crewe Alexandra were our great big hopes. Andy Lyons…did great, Danny Vaughan…disappeared.

Im just reminiscing here….
I think the players were on slightly more than £10,400 a year VAT – I had a friend who was working with Alan Johnson’s mate whilst he was at Latics and the figure he got told he was on was somewhat higher than that. I’m struggling to remember it now but I have either £18k or £35k in my head

Fairclough & Hildersley were awful and I’d agree on Daley – his partnership for a season with Gary Worthington was superb & I’m sure got us around 40 goals between them

Danny Vaughan was an odd one coz I thought he looked superb in Swain’s pre-season & then he just disappeared. i did hear rumours years later of some dodgy out of Latics stuff but have no idea whether they are true

in reply to: Total Football #176245

Volounteers walking around Springy collecting money were bad times and facing relegation from the football league or worse still being threatened with our very existence or struggling as a non league club were much worse times.
Less than a 1000 fans there for a match against Bury wasnt exactly fun times either.
Our plight being ignored by the council who were quickly there when we brought the cup home and being scoffed and beroted by a famous Rugby club and their fans is also there in my memory of hard times.
Never forget.

I was at that Bury game. Was it Leyland Daf cup, lost one nil to a Kevin Hulme goal. Circa 90-91 i think.
No, we did play them in that competition in 1990/91 & lost 2-1 but the attendance was over 1000 (only just mind)
The sub 1000 gate was when I was in my first year at Uni which was between 1993-1994 & we lost 3-1 (having just checked)

in reply to: Will Grigg Rumour #176221
Tyldesley, you’ve totally ignored where this discussion was going and harped on about league 1 stats…

My comment referred to the Championship, and his first time in the Championship for us coincided with a terrible set up, in fact a mess of a team so hardly surprising his goal tally was low.

when did Grigg say he prefers to play up front alone?

IMO, considering the way we play Grigg hasn’t got the physical attributes to play the lone striker role in this league. As I said, if he’s given the service then I’d say he could hold his own in this league.

Mad how some fans now imply he is sh ! te & good riddance?? :pinch:

I’d agree that the team the last time we were up was a mess & undoutedly had an effect on Grigg’s performances (as did the birth of his kid & an injury) & to be honest from what I’ve seen (as someone who lives 230 miles away & relies on highlights, live games & feeds) this season it hasn’t been too great either (team performance wise). I also accept that those players that he’s been able to feed off in Lge1 also struggle at a higher level so therefore he looks more exposed

For the record I’ve read & heard numerous interviews from Grigg where he has stated his best position is as a lone striker including one where he says that it was only when MK Dons switched to that system that he started banging the goals in although he has also stated that he thinks the “in the hole” role suits him too

Personally, and this isn’t something I’m just saying after the event, I have always said that I wasn’t sure that Grigg that the bit extra to be a great success in the Championship even going as far back as that first season with us. I always struggled to explain exactly why but he just seemed to lack that extra bit of pace & strength and there were times when it felt like he needed several chances before he’d get a goal & he’d find those chances harder to come by at a higher level

Maybe Grigg is wrong & he’s better suited to being part of a partnership. Maybe Michael O’Neill is wrong and he deserves to be starting every game at international level. Maybe Brentford were wrong & should have gone with him in the Championship when they went up & maybe now Cook is wrong & should have been playing him in stead of Garner/Vaughan/Clarke.

Or maybe, just maybe all these professional football coaches, managers etc.. are right

in reply to: Will Grigg Rumour #176071
Should Griggs games played have read 46.
Both good strikers, but with different styles. Lone striker role doesn’t suit Grigg and I’m sure if he got better service he’d score more, great finisher.

Grigg doesn’t suit the line striker role???? By his own admission it is his preferred position.
He also scored 20+ goals playing in that role for MK Dons playing as a lone striker. He scored 20+ goals playing in that role for us in his 1st season at Latics. He scored 20ish goals for us last season playing in that position.

I’d say the fact that he’s not had such a prolific rate in the Championship is more to do with where his ability level is than the position he’s been played in. There’s a reason why Brentford got rid of him when they got to that level, why he wasn’t prolific (even before injuries) for Latics in our last visit to this division, why Cook preferred others to him this season and why O’Neill doesn’t often start (or even pick him) at international level

Possible £4 million ? I’m sorry but that’s just too much.

Sorry but if Sunderland can sell an unproven Maja for £3.5mill (or the equivalent of what they still owed the club who they’ve transferred him to for a previous transfer) then Will Grigg for a possible £4mill looks like a steal!!

To be honest, if what Sunderland’s owner says is true & Latics changed the asking price then the sale of Maja for that £3.5mill probably had a lot to do with it

in reply to: Football & Rugby joint season tickets ?? #175410

I’m not opposed to it in the slightest but I can’t see the benefit to either club.

The only people that it will appeal to are probably the ones who already watch both clubs, in which case all you will do is reduce your ST intake money coz rather than buying 2 full priced ST’s they will be buying 1 discounted one
I doubt that they can make it cheap enough to entice those who have a preference for one sport/team but don’t mind the other one whilst still making it financially viable for both clubs
To me it would make more sense to offer a discount on individual match day tickets to ST holders of the other club
