  • in reply to: Surely he can’t play Caldwell ever again after… #113064

And why is it all about Caldwell anyway? In my opinion he played well for an hour and then made a shocking error. 4 or 5 players made suicidal errors in relation to the 3rd goal. Injuries and fatigue have caught up with us and that was most evident on Tuesday night. I’m sure it lifted spirits when a section of the crowd booed them off the pitch at the end of the game!
It’s all about getting behind the team for the remaining 3 games and let’s try and achieve what many would argue is the impossible!

I agree with Garswood- Not experienced enough to be Liverpool boss. I guess the same would apply to AVB. Trying not to contemplate life without him at Wigan as I really think after 2 and a half seasons of trying to get it right he finally achieved it in those magical last 10 games. Really looking forward to further progression next season.

As for the formation I’m pretty sure that the games against West Brom, Sunderland, Liverpool, Chelsea, around xmas time were the start of the wing backs as Stam and Jones were playing in those positions. The problem was that the 2 most important players in that formation did not have the level of fitness to get up and down the field. The January signing of Beausejour and return of Boyce gave us the personel to be effective. Add Maloney into the mix and the picture was complete. I think it is of paramont importance that we have cover in those wing back positions, Stam at a push could do a job but not much on the left if Beausejour is out for a significant period of time.

“The demoralising run that ended in an eighth straight league defeat when Wolves won at the DW Stadium at the start of November is long forgotten.”

We must be away to Wolves on the 13th May!

in reply to: For all you 4-4-2 fans….. #82566

In my opinion there was no formation change from the way we have been playing in the last few weeks. Al Habsi in goal, 3 centre halves – Fig, Alcaraz and Caldwell. Boyce and Beausejour wing backs. 2 maccas and Gomez in centre mid, Sammon up front with Di Santo behind him. I think Moses has been playind the Di santo role in recent weeks. It is almost a free role, hence the reason he often ends up on the wing.

Whatever the formation he has to get Diame back in that team with Rodders up front. He will be putting himself in the shop window until the end of the season

in reply to: Jones for Stam substitution! #80770

I wasn’t implying it was stam’s fault. I am saying that if he is to be our wide attacker then it is reliant on Martinez setting up his team to allow us to get more people in the box. The team is still set up for an Nzogbia type player on the right who can go past people and get into the box or to the touchline.

in reply to: Jones for Stam substitution! #80712

Stam can certainly cross a ball well. Unfortunately he does not have the pace to beat a man so if he is crossing from deep it is dependant on there being men in the box. The ball is going into the right area, there is just nobody in the box or having the desire to get in there.

I was in East Stand and do not have best eye sight but for me Jones was predominantely on the right and was unable to impact on the game from there. Diame is the only midfielder with a nailed on position for me the others spots should, in theory, be up for grabs. Unfortunately McCarthy seems to be bomb proof!

in reply to: Bob FFS #80621

I don’t think there’s any point trying to ascertain what the formation is. Moses should, in theory, have been the 2nd striker in a 3-5-2 formation but as many on this thread have previously stated, Moses spent much of his time on the right wing. Beausejour is another David Jones at left wing back. Hasn’t got a clue about defending. He needs to be further forward as ideally a winger in a 4-4-2 of wide striker in 4-5-1/4-3-3 formation.

That no mark free transfer from Wolves had a great 30 minutes. Always wants the ball and has the vision to bring our wide players into the game. Yes it’s only 30 minutes but I don’t think it’s right to write a player off before he even kicks a ball. It may well be that he needed a change of scenery OR Wolves direct style did not suit him. End of the day it’s more-or-less a no-risk move. I agree that we need to sign another wide player as Gomez is not the answer. Moses looks class and both central strikers staked a claim for a start on Saturday.

Despite Nzogbia leaving I’m a little more confident than this time last year.

    BacK to the original topic…

He scored at a ratio of 1 in 4 in the championship so that would be my worry about him. However, he was evidently in a struggling team at the time so maybe not too bad a performance. Players like Bent, were in successfull sides when they had their good championship seasons.
From what I have seen of him he works really hard, has good pace and when given the chance can finish. I would say he has a similar profile to Beckford who has had a good first season in the prem. We have to take a ‘chance’ on players like this as proven prem strikers are out of our price bracket. O and the last player we signed from Peterborough wasn’t too bad was he?

well my maths are better than his coz he states if us or Blackpool lose then we are relegated, err i dont think so we can lose and stay up if Brum and Pool lose heavy and we dont

Great mathematical minds think alike Nuneaton!

in reply to: Calculators required #66097

“What is also pretty obvious is that if Wigan or Blackpool lose, then they automatically get relegated. But there are a lot of other combinations.”

I do not need my calculator to tell you the first statement is wrong. If we lose 1-0, Blackpool 3-0 and Birmingham 3-0 then we stay up. If we lose 1-0 Blackpool 1-0 and Birmingham 2-0 then Blackpool stay up. Yes they are unlikely but not beyond all realms of possibility!

in reply to: Whelans big decision #54538

I have watched the majority of games this season and in my opinion, Gomez performs far better in away games. Newcastle and Blackburn away spring to mind. In both those games I think he played central, just behind the striker. I think fans accept a slower pace of play away from home. In those first 20 minutes at Newcastle he played a big part in silencing the crowd. At home, when we are expected to win, the crowd will get on his back and you can see the confidence being drained from him. Add to that the fact he is coming into the team for a player who is completely different (and far superior) will not help his cause. Martinez made a mistake yesterday, unfortunately, he has seen the ‘Gomez effect’ on home performances before so you worry whether he will ever learn!

    in reply to: Captain #31380

Evidently my captain question was not that interesting as the post has moved in a completely different direction!

    in reply to: Captain #31219

I wasn’t implying that it was revolutionary. It would be interesting to see who he sees as “potential captains” in his current squad! As I said above, only a couple spring to mind!
