Just seen his interview on motd, he spoke sense & fair play to him, he never moaned about the players we have missing through injury

Did we actually miss Caldwell /Ramis, and McArthur tonight ?

Replacements Lopez and Jones both did well. Particularly impressed tonight with Lopez – for someone of so few games, up against some of the best (Aguero, Balotelli). Not afraid to get stuck in, appears a little more mobile than one or the other alternative in the back 3.

Boyce looking more comfortable in defence. Stam has stepped up since the Bradford debacle, providing options now down the RHS …
I’d agree with all of this but would replace Jones with McArthur or Watson all day long. Jones plays too safe and doesn’t look forward enough for my liking. Both MaArthur and Watson have the ability to beat a man if need be. Jones doesn’t seem to have that. I think he’s a great squad player but not a first teamer in my opinion.

Personally, and purely based on what I’ve seen from Saturday and last night, across the back I’d like to see – when fit – Ramis, Lopez and Caldwell as the back three(I know you don’t like Ramis, but I think he has solid over recent weeks).
Ordinarily, McArthur before Jones; but think Jones has done great job (better than expected) in last couple of games, so praise where merited.

Defensively, Figueroa had a mad moment last night (one similar to last season when he man-handled an opposition player (last man) on half-way line. Can’t recall the team. Stoke ?

His forte, left-footer, offers good combinations with Beausejour on LHS. But has to merit his place in defence.

Ramis is pretty much as was at the beginning of the season for me. Comfortable in possession, but sadly lacking in pace, easily got at by someone with a little pace and seemingly unsure as to his ability to challenge

    e.g.

Roberts, Reading was the latest example Saturday last …. 2nd half, back to goal, Ramis marking, turned and left for dead, no attempted challenge. Now I know Roberts was quick, but now 34, hardly in his prime. Would have expected Rmais to offer a little more resistance.

Compare this to Lopez, Saturday even. Gave as good as he got from the ungainly Russian, Pavel P (Roberts sub), when he came on for the last 10. Refused to be pushed about.

On last night’s performance thought we fared much better with Lopez in the middle than Ramis.

Nothing personal against Ramis; West Ham, he looked a superstar – then again, they played to his strengths (Carroll, etc.)

Finally, Gomez ! His first 45 minutes last night was probably his best display as I can recall (forget the 45m Reading stint). Appeared much more confident. Was even last man (?!) in the box heading clear in one incident, and showed a willingness to get stuck in (typically, not his game). Booked (Barry). And of course, played his usual football. Better !

    Played well
Kone should have hit the target with his header, Maybe
Habit should have held the 1st, maybe
    Penalty, maybe actually no chance
Most ridiculous substitution ever, Calum should have told him to took off

    that’s football for yer.

Hart flaps (again) at Stam (50 yard run and) right-wing cross in first half, Kone’s header a yard over the bar.

Kone puts header wide from 8 yards out in 2nd half (arguably, the key moment – particularly, given City’s much brighter start to 2nd half)

5 minutes later, Ali spills (?) Barry shot, 2 deflections and thank you very much (0-1)!

    Fine Margins ….

Callum Mc weekly pay packet based on appearances ?

I was thinking he might play Kone up front on his own. Assuming Maloney is out and Caldwell and Ramis unfit:

    Ali
    Boyce, Lopez, Figs,
Stam, Mac 1,Jones, Mac 2, Beau,
    Gomez,
    Kone

I think Gomez will be full of confidence after Sat and is worth a start. I would also strengthen midfield to compensate for Lopez.

I actually think Lopez looked decent when he came on on Saturday.

That’s means if he plays tonight he’ll have a shocker.
I thought he did ok as well but I would fear for him tonight. It might be asking a bit too much of him against that City attack and I would be very worried about set pieces especially if Dzecko plays.
Agreed on Lopez, Saturday. We ain’t been hot on defending our box (set pieces, crosses, etc.) all season, so losing Ramis / bringing in Lopez changes nothing for me.

We’re not expected to win; personally, I would take the game to City (so to speak) and retain Di Santo and Kone up front. J Hart and City defence have been getting the headlines for all the wrong reasons to date …… important we give THEM something to think about. Gomex can always drop a little deeper if he needs to (‘nuisance factor’).

Clichy out tonight, so Kone may get some joy down the right.

Some groin problem that Alcaraz appears to have …!

Joe Hart (recent mistakes accepted) & Manuel Neuer spring to mind for arguments sake

Van Persie and Messi up front (or Di Santo and Maloney) ? etc. etc.

Reality check for some … (Wigan, we are)
No need to start getting snippy with me just because you agreed with a silly comment.
Just stating the obvious.
Stating the obvious you were, but you were taking what I said completely out of context so keep the reality check for yourself pal.
out of context ? not at all

viewed in the context of the bigger picture (wigan, we are)

who’s the snippy one (pal) ?!

I wouldnt swap him for any other keeper in the world, keeping us in the game with a cracking save at 2-2…again. Loves to play for the club, we are very lucky to have him, thanks Bowton.

    Agreed
Two buffoons, then? You wouldn’t swap him for any keeper in the world? Give yourselves a shake, lads.
Who would you swap him for then Griff?
That is such a silly question to ask on every level ishmael.

I thought everyone who reads this board knows that griff would pick himself to do the job, in his mind he is superior to every other person on the planet at what ever he does.
My, my – Brown Owl has come out to join the rest of the girl guides this weekend.

As for the original question, none of you can think of a better keeper in the world than Ali?

I never said I wasn’t happy with him but there’s nobody in the world better? Really?
I just said I wouldnt swap him for any other keeper in the world, (us being Wigan and all that) Griff, you going through a bad time at the moment? Some of your comments are really negative. Maybe you should try the samaritans?
self-perception and reality – two very different things !

don’t hold yer breath waiting for an answer.

in reply to: Jordi Gomez – should never be knocked again. #97120

Awesome today. I was a big critic of his two seasons back. The lad proved himself today. And spared the blushes of al habsi.

    Superb.

What, and you think that makes it alright that you slag him off for three (not two) seasons and suddenly he has earned your forgiveness? I bet he’s really arsed.

As Jordi trudged off tonight, some bloke said to me he doesn’t seem too pleased. If I was Gomez, I’d have been telling the whole crowd to f*** off when they started to chant his name. Fickle set of twats, the lot of you.

Were’s the “Kone is a wanker” thread for missing that open goal header in the first half? Hmmm, thought not.
Let’s be honest, the fact that he missed was probably as much a surprise as Gomez putting 3 past the keeper.

    A surprise based

    (a) nature of clear cut goal-scoring opportunity
    (b) Kone’s form to date.

Were the season to conclude today and Player of Season Award made, Kone would definitely be in the mix. One slip up doesn’t make him a winker. Ditto Al-Habsi …bigger picture (form over time). Due respect.

As much as Gomez should be praised for getting himself into goal-scoring positions, the quality of the assists should be acknowledged (Beausejour, Di Santo, Kone …).

As regards Beausejour, quality of his deliveries (2 examples only) for both Kone’s miss yesterday and Gomez 2nd goal speak volumes for his value to /inclusion in the team …even if he ain’t the quickest.

Many wins to skin a cat, etc.

in reply to: Jordi Gomez – should never be knocked again. #97070
I actually thought he was having a mixed day, some great touches, but got caught in possession numerous times. The 3 goals made up for that.
Does anyone know if he knocked the third one in with his left foot? I couldn’t see when everyone jumped up. If he did it’s the perfect hat trick, left foot, right foot header. goodpost

The guy is an enigma. Admittedly, no Gomez lover, too hit and miss. If anyone was to be taken off at half-time today then it was Gomez. Took him 15-20 minutes to get into the game (poor first touch, not up to pace of the game). Spurned a great opportunity.

Credit where due, stuck to his guns, pushed himself to get into dangerous areas. He had probably three chances in the 2nd half and took the lot. The 2nd fantastic !

That said, Roberto must come in for some praise. Di Santo substitution inspired. Changed the course of the game, even if Ali insisted on keeping us all on the edge of our seats.

Di Santo, back to his energetic self (WBA non-show hopefully a thing of the past); Kone, a handful as ever, once again coolness personified and touch of quality playing Gomez in the for the winner; Beausejour, firing in some great balls from the left.

For me, credit to all who came into the team today – Stam was excellent down the right; Jones, tidy in midfield.

Great team performance all-round, given the context (0-1, ‘must-win, significant injuries). Had to go and win the game a second time after Ali’s exceptional blip. Speak’s volumes for team spirit.

Ali got a decent reception at the end, the fans recognise his contribution to date to the cause. If Gomez carries on in a similar vein (no, he musn’t score 3 EVERY week!), then hopefully, better times lie ahead for him. If today, doesn’t give him a little more confidence, hell nothing well.

WELL DONE ALL – JORDI, match-winner, included

in reply to: al habsi…. #97067

Has sadly not made it in time to make this years xmas blooper videos.

He is a top draw shot stopper, but when it comes down to dealing with crosses and distribution he is left wanting.
Their first goal was hanging in the air for 5 mins just five or 6 yards out and he chose to stay on his line.
World class save from their number 12 at 2-2 though. goodpost
I think you need to take a look at our defence.

    e.g. Crouch /Stoke (2-2), and Morrison /West Brom (0-1)

Lose count the number of times we’re getting done on set pieces, or balls in from the by-line and pretty hacked off about it. Commanding centre-half (in the air) in our ranks ? Don’t see it (put their head where others wouldn’t…)

3 Latics players in amongst Morrison today (Figueroa, Jones and BJour) yet the defender comes up trumps (0-1)!

5 minutes later, observed Morrison come up for a corner, paid particular regard to our defence preparing themselves in readiness. You’d have thought lesson had been learnt. But no, not picked up, Ramis for one allowed him to walk on by. The guy almost made it 2-0 at the far post.

    Agreed

in reply to: Mark Hughes sacked. #97042

Couldnt of happened to a nicer bloke :cheer:

Another bad decision I believe as I think Mark Hughes would have pulled it around, decent manager.
False report, soft lad. He’s not a decent manager.

His record at QPR: Played 38, Won 8, Drew 6, Lost 20. A win percentage of less than 24%. At his previous job, Fulham, he had a win percentage of 33% and even with millions and millions at City he did fuck all with them.
So what happened in the other four games?
Good spot !

Obviously, had one or two too many (can-of-lager, that is) B)
