Apologies, Lostock. I’m looking forward to the new season too.

Past performance is no guide to the future, I know, but Owen doesn’t seem to have outshone Roberto so far.

And Owen does look comical standing on the touchline in his shorts. I wonder if he’ll be tempted to turn out and play again, or perhaps wear something more dignified.

But if silly antics on the touchline won prizes, Tony Pulis and Neil Warnock would be battling it out for the League Championship every year.

Neil Warnock in The Independent today; I stood with Arsene Wenger in the centre circle and turned towards [the technical areas]. I said, “Look at the dugouts, they are miles apart, you’ll never hear me.” He pondered, looked down at me from his great height, smiled wryly and said, “You will find a way.”

i am puting a posative spin on the coyle appointment.

But Martinez actually comes out on top in your comparisons.

Coyle’s team isn’t likely to be organised any better defensively than Martinez’ was.

Coyle, like Martinez, saw his team relegated from the Premier League. And, like it or not, Martinez did win the Cup.

Or is that what you mean by positive spin – suggestions that aren’t true.

Can’t you find a way of praising Coyle without, rightly or wrongly, knocking Martinez?

Help! That’s enough to persuade me to join UKIP.

Any new rulings on fowl play?

cant remember any of coyles teams getting dicked 9-1

Despite that, Wigan finished this season with a better goal difference than Bolton last season. So Bolton must have let some goals in somewhere.

    Coyle 2011/12 18 Bolton Wanderers (R) 38 10 6 22 46 77 −31 36
    Martinez 2012/13 18 Wigan Athletic (R) 38 9 9 20 47 73 –26 36

Oh – and Martinez won the Cup too.

Stop whingeing about Roberto. He’s gone – Owen is here now. Let’s move on.

Winning 4 home games all season and several big score humiliations aren’t stories.Surely our league campaign can’t be any worse than under “Europes best young one ” ?……….can it ?

    In fact, in his final season in the Premier League, Coyle did no better at Bolton that Martinez did at Wigan;

    Coyle 2011/12 18 Bolton Wanderers (R) 38 10 6 22 46 77 −31 36
    Martinez 2012/13 18 Wigan Athletic (R) 38 9 9 20 47 73 –26 36

Despite only four home wins and several big score humiliations, Roberto had the better goal difference, so I’d say he had the edge. Oh – and he won the Cup too.

But why do you keep looking for reasons to moan about Roberto? It’s time to move on.

The Europa League gets jollier by the day.

And I thought we might be offered a glass of wine. Can we pop out for a pint at half time?

Just as important, are there any restrictions on pies?

in reply to: Spanish Bullshit Vs Scottish Bloody Nose #116272
Like Donny’s Page said in an earlier post, surely he can’t be any worse than Roberto.

Why are you so ungrateful? Can’t you bring yourself to say anything charitable about Roberto?

Circumstances have changed, and I would certainly expect Owen to be more successful in the Championship than Roberto was in the Premier League.

However, if you insist on comparisons, here are the records from their relegation seasons.

    Coyle 2011/12 18 Bolton Wanderers (R) 38 10 6 22 46 77 −31 36
    Martinez 2012/13 18 Wigan Athletic (R) 38 9 9 20 47 73 –26 36

They’re not too different, are they? Oh – and Roberto won the Cup.

But it’s time to stop looking backwards. There’s a new season to look forward to.

in reply to: Spanish Bullshit Vs Scottish Bloody Nose #116263

Can’t we show a little gratitude too?

Thanks, Roberto, for your work here. Best wishes for the future.

Hello, Owen, there’s a lot to do. Let’s get on with it.

in reply to: Owen Coyle v Bob #116262

    It’s a pointless discussion.

But if you’re looking forward to the new season, good!

in reply to: Spanish Bullshit Vs Scottish Bloody Nose #116247

Roberto has gone and we’re in a very diferent situation now.

There’s no point in comparing him with Coyle.

in reply to: Owen Coyle v Bob #116246

There’s no point in comparing the two. They’re different managers in very different circumstances.

And I don’t expect Wigan to cruise through the Championship. There are some strong teams with wealthy owners here too.

in reply to: Bolton Viewpoint #116244

Whelan does have a clear long-term plan for the club. I assume that he has explained this to Coyle and asked him to work within it.

But Wigan too had a disastrous season for injuries last season. Was that simply misfortune or a fault with the training and phsiotherapy regimes? I don’t think you can blame the staff for broken legs.

Coyle faced a difficult situation the season Bolton went down. He lost Elmander and Sturridge from the season before, and didn’t – or perhaps couldn’t afford to – replace them. Holden suffered a long term injury in pre-season training, and then Lee and Mears suffered broken legs.

They faced very difficult opening league fixtures which set them back. Cahill left for Chelsea in January. Then came the Muamba incident which must have affected everyone at the club.

So Coyle had now lost seven first team players – that’s the majority of his team. Even so, Bolton fought on and were not relegated until the last day of the season.

in reply to: Players who have left #116242

I think we can say that we’ve got higher priorities than the Europa League. This is going to be a season of change.

We’ve already had some discussion about Coyle’s tactical skills and training methods. But his time in charge at Wigan is likely to be defined by the players he signs before the transfer window closes.

It’s going to be a difficult but urgent task, and still more players are likely to leave. He will then have to blend the new players into a team. It will be asking a great deal of him to lead out a new squad and give a good performance at Wembley.

Fans will need patience this season. As we have seen, many haven’t got a lot of patience, understanding or sympathy.

    in reply to: Golobart #116225

Goodbye Scharner, Figueroa, Alcaraz, Golobart, Lopez and Stam.

We’ve still got Boyce, Ramis and Caldwell.

We’ll be alright – so long as we only play a back three.

in reply to: Bolton Viewpoint #116199

So Lee and Mears suffered broken legs. That shows Coyle was careless – no wonder Bolton sacked him.

Watson and Stam both broke a leg last season. And we’ve got a new manager too.

Oh – it’s Coyle. Keep that plaster of Paris handy!
