Bill Kenwright needed a new manager. He appointed Roberto because he had a good record of managing with limited resources.

Premier League wage bills for 2012/13 should be published soon – but looking at those for 2011/12, Arsenal had a wage bill of £144 million. Everton’s was £62 million, less than half of Arsenal’s.

Arsenal had the fourth highest wage bill. They should be challenging for the championship regularly – and winning it from time to time. But haven’t won any trophy at all since the FA Cup nine years ago.

Everton came mid-table in the list of wage bills. For them, to finish higher than that in the League table is success.

So Everton lag far behind Arsenal, both financially and in their potential to win trophies. I wonder if Arsenal fans are happier than Everton fans.

Arsenal were reduced by injuries and suspensions to playing Sanogo against Wigan, with little-known – at least to me – players Källström, Akpom and Eisfeld on the bench.

Even Chelsea are running out of players. Last night – in a Champions League semifinal – they had Aké and Kalas on the bench. Mourinho faces more problems in the second leg. Though Ivanovic can return, Cech and Terry are now injured, and Lampard and Mikel will be suspended. And he wants to rest players in the vital league game at Liverpool.

So it’s difficult managing even a large squad through a long season. Rosler has done well to arrive at the end of the season with such a good choice of players available to play. Rotation has been part of his plan.

I wonder if I could get in as a student.

Probably, and then it’ll be the carat instead of the stick.

19 years without any silverware isn’t really success in my book ! Maintaining their place in the top flight with all the money that goes with it these days yet nothing really to show for it spells mediocrity and not success !

For most teams in the Premier League, survival is success. It’s been even worse than usual this season – eleven teams have been involved in the battle against relegation.

Most of them have devoted their resources to survival. Hull, usually playing attacking football with a strong team and with the help of a kind draw, have reached the Cup Final. The best that the others can hope for is tenth place in the league.

There is a group of three teams – Manchester United, Southampton and Newcastle – not in fear of relegation but with nothing to play for.

Then there is a group of six teams jostling for a top four finish and a place in the Champions League.

How many of these teams would you call successful?

Latics, who bought Charnock Richard Gold Club last year…

    An interesting nugget.

Everton hold the record for the most seasons played in England’s top tier (Division One and Premier League).

Yes, it’s strange that Stones preferred a successful Premier League club to an impoverished one fighting relegation.

Moyes was more comfortable with players from modest backgrounds – Jagielka and Baines for example. He didn’t really go in for European and South American superstars – which was part of the problem when he went to United.

When you’ve got two good strikers, you can just lump it into the penalty box.

Just imagine what Wigan would look like with a proper striker!

I wonder if after this game, like at Everton last season, Roberto turned to Graeme Jones in the dressing room and once again said “We’ll that’s the best job interview we could have had” ??? ;)

If Roberto’s move to Everton was planned as early as that, then why should Coyle’s appointment have been a rush job?

Thanks really to the shite Judas Bob left us in when he jumped ship! Coyle was a rush job brought in to bring players in that could work in the Championship. The slow start was down to uMartinez not Coyle.Granted Coyle wasnt up to the job and Uwe has done great to pick up the pieces but the slow start was down many factors other than Coyle and one big contributing factor was Roberto Martinez.

David Moyes had little experience of European competition and rotating his squad.

Neither Brendan Rogers or Roberto has yet gained this experience. And the lack of European games has been a great help to both this season.

Even our own Uwe Rosler has more experience of rotation. So I’m saying not yet for Roberto.

He will also know that Reading aren’t the strongest opponents.

Martinez to Old Trafford and Rosler to Everton.

Don’t worry – we’ll be rid of Rosler soon!

Defeat at Everton was more than United could bear.

There’s a vacancy for a promising young manager at Old Trafford.
