How long before “Bottom Four Bob” has Everton at the wrong end of the table ?

The quote of the season so far.

It must be galling for you to see him sitting in the top four. And still undefeated.

Meanwhile, Wigan celebrate their first home game in Europe. Thank you, Roberto!

    Sunderland still have one point.

By crikey, he’s done it – Top Four Bob!

Have the Leyland lot nothing to say tonight? Not even a grudging Well done, Bob!

Come on, Owen. You can join him as Top Six Coyle.

Only Wigan, under Roberto Martinez, have won at Goodison Park in 2013. What a great Cup win that was on 9 March. 3-0 to Wigan, and the last goals scored at Goodison by a visiting team.

Everton are undefeated in the league this season under Roberto Martinez.

Everton are undefeated at home in the league in 2013, a run of 11 matches.

Everton haven’t conceded a league goal at home since 2 March when Robson Kanu scored for Reading; Everton 3 Reading 1.

Very worrying! I think I must be becoming a follower of Bob.

    What – no Rivington Pike?

Most football fans – me included – think that they know better than the manager of the team they support. As Sky TV and talksport demonstrate, you can fill hours of broadcasting with debate, and still reach no clear conclusion.

Nigel’s time at Derby was by no means a failure. I think that poor home form has cost Nigel his job. They have already won away from home three times this season; at Brighton (2-1), Yeovil (3-0) and Millwall (5-1). But most Derby fans will not have been there to witness these successes.

Many more managers would be at risk of the sack if they had to get better results, both financially and on the field, than Nigel Clough.

I agree with what you say, Tylders.

It will take Coyle some time to get to know all his squad. However, if the rumours are true, he should have been taking note of performances long before the season ended.

He’s tried out most people now, and should have a better idea of the way he wants to go. What direction he will choose, I really can’t say. However, the new defence should give us a firm foundation.

I agree that Holt is probably unsuited to the role of single striker. What made the team performances worse when he played was the obsession of kicking long balls in his general direction.

I know a couple of Derby County fans who would disgree with you completely.

Two football fans are usually enough for complete disagreement.

Nigel Clough has been managing in a different economy to his father. His job has been to cut costs. He has assembled a team of young players, but has not been allowed to finish the job.

Owen Coyle, on the other hand, has been given money to spend. Whether it has all been spent wisely, we have yet to see. The indications are that the defenders have been better value than the forwards.

How long before Martinez becomes “Top Four Bob”?

Oh yes, my wife is coming round to see you – and then you’ll be sorry.

We’ve now got twelve midfield players – including wingers – playing for six places, and they’ve all played this season!

    Watson McArthur Gomez McClean
    McManaman Powell

    Fyvie McCann Espinoza Beausejour
    Dicko Redmond

Without Holt, Coyle hasn’t found the best use for the wingers.

Coyle has to develop the tactics that suit the players that are available. Hopefully, he can add a forward to his squad.

The most convincing performance to date was against Nottingham Forest – with Holt injured and Fortune linking with Maloney in a fluid formation.

    With Maloney, Fortune and Holt all out injured, I’d say Coyle would now choose the following as his first choice Championship players;

    Carson

    Shotton Barnett Rogne Perch

    Watson McArthur Gomez McClean

    McManaman Powell

I’m not sure that I’d agree with this choice, but I’d like to see a more regular Championship team, with changes for the Europa League games.

Players who play twice week can give less in a game than those who play once a week. And you cannot expect players to play Sunday, recover Monday and play Tuesday.

Coyle has a large squad and the intense programme – which will continue into the New Year – means that Coyle has to rotate his players.

The master of rotation was Sir Alex Ferguson. As David Moyes has discovered, it is a difficult skill.

We haven’t scored a goal away from home since the first game of the season at Barnsley. Barnsley are one of the worst teams in the League, Watford one of the best.

We haven’t got a forward fit to play; our best player in the last two matches was our goalkeeper. We’ve now played four matches in ten days.

We were lucky to get a point against Zulte Waregem. We were lucky to get three against Ipswich. We were lucky to get nil against Manchester City.

Our luck ran out against Watford. We need a striker and a co-ordinated midfield for the game against Maribor.
