Don’t think anyone’s mentioned the legendary Supporters Club, Chris Coffey and Ernie Claxton on the little table as you went in, all the SC “do’s”, players being in the Lounge after games and happily chatting to fans about the days events and general footy chat….not to mention the pics and club pennants all round the place.
Of course, what did we see just outside the club…the Junior Latics caravan.
Remember going to Hartlepool (early 90’s), open away end 250 yards from the see, freezing cold night.
Bobby Campbell trying to conceal a fag from Ray Mathias at the bottom of the players tunnel before the Norwich game, despite the smoke rising from behind him and the comments of Steve Bruce, Kevin Drinkell etc who quite clearly didn’t fancy the pitch in that cup tie in 87.
Going round a roundabout in Macc, trying to work out which was the right way to Moss Rose (year we played Chester there) and realising there were about 8 cars behind me all thinking I knew the way to the ground.
As for that Bury Boxing Day game, wasn’t there a point where Neill Rimmer chipped the keeper from about 25/30 yards, ball flies over said keeper, hits a huge puddle and the keeper just turns round and picks ball up and game carries on….cue lots of stunned Latics fans who were celebrating what looked a certain goal
Coming out of hotel in Bruges on day of game after overnight trip, had an hour or 2 kip, then made our way to square about dinner time, Wiganer’s everywhere, daft grins on their faces, singing and dancing, not a hit of bother from police or locals and thinking “Wigan in Europe, what the hell are we doing here”…great memories
He also sent of Nedem Onouha in ridiculous circumstances at the Brighton QPR game over the Christmas/New Year.
In the week after the Ipswich game, I caught up with some of the FL shows I hadn’t watched and saw brief highlights of the Hudds/Bristol game, same day as we played Villa and he was dreadful in that. How he hasn’t been sent away for a time to learn the rules of the game, is beyond me, refs like him will get the game done away with
Utd play Hull on the Thursday before in League Cup, so our game will be on the Sunday which will mean the Norwich (h) game will move to Wednesday.
Shame that such a respectful manager to the smaller clubs B)
Not a great fan of McCarthy, but like Pullis (no great fan of his either), McCarthy can always be relied on to give an honest opinion of the game, unlike the Wengers/Hughes etc of the football world
If they had lost the game, he would have said pretty much the same about the game…of course its easy to compliment the opposition and admit you got a lucky break when you’ve won, but he’s not like that, always says it as he genuinely sees it.
Defender curse strikes again, as others have said, don’t think we’ve seen the best of him, though I haven’t been overly impressed. That said, he had a good game at Hudds, so I’d have liked to see him play v Derby and see if he could carry on that form.
There is nothing wrong with playing 1 up front, but what I would like to see us doing is playing Grigg as he front man with Wildschut on the wing. Where we struggle with the 1 up front, is that our midfielders don’t get themselves in the box and around the front man to pose a threat to opposing defences. I can understand why we’re being ultra-defensive at the moment, but hope if we start picking up points, then Joyce will switch to a more adventurous style, as surely this how he has coached teams in the past.
I tweeted a journo the other day to ask about McDonald, was he not suspended or had someone made a complete balls-up at club. Reply was it had been reported in paper that he would miss Hudds away, because of a mistake on Soccerbase/BBC which had credited a booking to him instead of Power at the Wolves game. Why a journo would use Soccerbase and not a simple search of FA is beyond me.
Incidently, Burton’s Ben Turner is on 9 bookings already so could be suspended soon…9 bookings before end of November takes some doing
Surely the best nickname of all was the very simple, but clever Fitz “One Size” Hall.
Remember John Butler used to be known as “Spider” and Tony Kelly was “Zico”
The one thing that any football fan wants from players is effort to the cause, doesn’t matter how bad they are, but the thing with Powell is that you begin to wonder, is he really so susceptible to injuries or just soft and even before he went off yesterday, he didn’t seem to be interested…looks like the penny hasn’t dropped with him yet. Having said that, I can understand the frustrations with him, but the shouts yesterday were an utter disgrace, almost on a par with those so called “fans” who booed Jordi on to the field in that Stoke game a few years back.
As for Bogdan, agree totally, he is a liability but its not because he doesn’t care/try, just not good enough imo, so the cheers for him going off were even worse than the treatment of Powell
That was the view I had of the team selection yesterday, Yanick as the front man (presumably the plan was to use his pace) with Powell behind him to supply the vital passes, unfortunately this just didn’t happen. Then when Garbutt came on (he did well tbf), he replaced Jacobs on wing, with MJ slotting in where Powell was. Just seemed yesterday the passing was very poor with no one having the ability to unlock their defence.
Davies, when he came on, didn’t do what he did at Cardiff, ie bring others into play, rather his other habit of giving away stupid fouls instead of making them at least work to play the ball out of defence. Formation wasn’t forward-thinking enough yesterday, although once we’d taken Bogdan off, we were hamstrung with only having 1 sub left with 30 mins to go. Joyce then had only one change left which he couldn’t risk until late in the game.
Always said Kelly should have played for England, could have been anything he wanted to be that lad. Brilliant passer of a ball and wasn’t bad at a set-piece either
Brave decision by the Chairman, personally thought Gary would have been given a little more time to turn things round. Really hope our new boss isn’t Robinson and that having seen him sacked, Sharpe hasn’t panicked into sacking Caldwell and having a ready-made replacement. Not sure what Robinson would bring if its him, He has proved he cant handle Championship and just don’t see that working.
Have a feeling it might be Graeme Jones…not sure why. Not sure who I want, just hope the Chairman has thought long and hard and has a plan in mind to take us forward and that its not a knee-jerk decision. Good luck Gary and thanks
I’d agree with a lot of what JR and Runcorn say, the early madness of games like Forest apart, we haven’t conceded lots of chances/goals, however what we don’t do at times is move the ball quickly enough and that final ball can be lacking. GC obviously wants us to play neat, passing football but he needs to find his best XI and formation and stick to it. The fact we are in most games would suggest that the basis is there of a reasonable side, its just up to the manager to get the best out of what he;s got.
I’m still behind Caldwell, but things do need to start to see an upturn in results quickly or I fear it may be time to get someone else in, the big question would be who…Chairman may have a very big decision to make soon.
