I know the draw is this Friday but does anyone know how soon thereafter the sequence of fixtures are announced?
The first game is September 19th and there’s a strong possibility that will be the week I start a new job, it would be nice to know sooner rather than later if I have to beg 2 days off in my first week to get to Freiburg and back (which would be ironic as I was there 2 weeks ago).

Respect to you and yours Johnjoe.

This game will mark the start of Latics biggest challenge this season which, IMHO, is playing in front of their own fans at home. Assuming this forum is a representative cross section of the fan base as a whole and based on what I’ve experienced in recent years I fully expect the team to be boo’d off the pitch at half time if they are not winning.

It seems as though some people expect us to romp this division and typically these poeple appear to be the ones who are first to vent their spleens when all is not going perfectly. lets hope we score early and then at least the boo boys may be subdued — until the next home game anyway !

Finish 11th, just too many games to mount any sort of meaningful promotion push, but still a solid return to the Championship which unfortunately still has folk ranting on here.
exit FA cup at first attempt to lower league team at home.
Do ourselves proud in Europa but just fail to make knockout stages.

            That’s what I sing.

It’s only a few who insist on “You’ll never notice..”

I thought I was the only one, I suspect we are “the few” Garswood.

Do they sing the right words?

We don’t sing the right words, it’s ‘you’ll never know dear, how much I love you”

                >at least your great uncle Arthur has got one.

Nah, I’m in France that day so you’ll be OK, there’ll be at least one ticket left.

Not going. looked at the feasibility of a return trip for me and my lad from South of France but it’s just not on. The missus has already got the hump cos I’ve insisted we drive back a day early so I can make the Donny home game.

I may be wrong but I suspect Griff was calling out the booming name drop rather than suggesting it was untrue. Pots and kettles come to mind :-)

It would be just my luck if we get VFB Stuttgart as it’s one of only 3 overseas grounds I’ve already done (the other 2 being Hajduk Split and a non league Austrian team I can’t remember the name of but the standard of which turned out to be like watching Hindley Celtic !)

I got the opportunity to speak very briefly to DW last week. I didn’t thank him for the FA Cup or 8 years in the premier league or the new stadium or funding some of the most gifted players I’ve seen in a Wigan shirt or for being responsible for some incredible highs over the past decade and more, I thanked him for saving my club when it looked all but doomed. That’s the biggest thing Whelan’s done for me and whatever happens in the future I’ll be eternally grateful.

So what qualities and attributes are you looking for in the next manager in order for Latics to achieve your ambitions ?

Anyone happy with someone who’ll come in and spend big on players, offering long term lucrative contracts in an effort to bounce straight back ?

Do you want a manager whose focus is on “not losing the game”, maybe sneak a lot of 1-0 wins after tight defensive performances.

Do you want a manager who’ll get the ball in the box as quickly as possible or play for free kicks in the opposition half so we can lump another ball into a crowded box, playing the percentage game.

All these are viable options, none right or wrong, just different, but what do you want ?

I take your point Owd_Git about the effects of sliding down the league after positive growth in recent years. My lad is one of those who wears his kit with pride, but to be honest he still will when we do inevitably return to league one. I was listing my own personal hopes for the new manager. I’m finding as I get older that I’m a lot less bothered about what everyone else gets out of supporting Wigan and am more concerned with my own enjoyment and turning up every week with my lad and my mates to watch an entertaining if somewhat unsuccessful team is just fine with me (although I obviously would take success as well, it’s just not that important to me anymore).
If people don’t want to support us in the future just because we are in the bottom 2 divisions that’s their choice (and their loss) but I won’t lose sleep over it.
On your other point I’m not bothered at all about pride from the manager, come in and do the job to the best of your ability within the limitations you will inevitably face, that’s all I ask.
