The difficulty is, if the manager wants the players to play like this, then they will do .. or be dropped. For me, Im quite prepared to give him more time to make adjustments, maybe another signing or two, and let the players gel more, but I do think in this division that perhaps possession based football isn’t the best tactic, and we need to play more positively – game plan seems to be focussed on not letting the opposition get the ball and score .. nothing wrong with that, we just need to add the part where we actually have to score as well, and when we do .. go for more
Yes but I also think it shows cautiousness – if we go 1-0 up, why not up the tempo, go for 2-0 up rather than sit back and try to keep hold, we have done this for years and look where it has got us – always seem to be too cautious in my opinion, rather than going for it.
Any news on a new edition coming out for this season Jayt ?
Perch > QPR
I just saw this – surely it means 400k each which is still far too cheap in my opinion …. surely ??
DON COWIE reckons Rangers supporters will soon warm to Wigan pair James Tavernier and Martyn Waghorn once Mark Warburton gets the polish out.
The duo are due to check in at Ibrox today after a fee of around £400,000 was agreed and they will join up with former Latics team-mate Rob Kiernan.
Gers fans might not be doing cartwheels at players coming from a club in England’s third tier but Wigan midfielder Cowie is convinced all three are gems who just need a change of scenery to shine.
The ex-Inverness, Watford and Cardiff star said: “I wouldn’t look at it as a negative that they are leaving Wigan. It’s a case of us being relegated and our new manager, Gary Caldwell, wanting to put his own stamp on things.
“He also has to balance the books. We have a big squad and you can only carry a certain number. Getting some money in for those two lets him shuffle the pack a bit.
“But it’s no reflection of them as players. He would have liked to have kept them as they are talented young guys. But he also has to look at what he needs for this league so it is a good deal for all parties.
“It can only be good for the guys. It will get them playing again at Rangers and I can only see them doing well. They will be great signings.”
Tavernier is just 23 having come through at Leeds and Newcastle and spent much of his career on loan.
Waghorn, 25, was a hit at Leicester under Sven Goran Eriksson and was capped by England Under-21s but toiled as the Latics went down last term.
Cowie feels a fresh start will invigorate the pair at Rangers.
He said: “They both have good pedigree. Trav has been part of promotion-winning sides in the last two years. He helped Rotherham get up then did it again at Bristol City last year. He came through the ranks with Newcastle and is a very good young player.
“Waggy is the same. He was at Sunderland and Leicester before joining Wigan. He’s a bit older but it was hard for everyone here last season. We were all gutted with relegation.
“He is a player who’ll reward you with goals if he gets a run of games. I’ve played against him and he is a real handful. He has great movement and is dangerous in and around the box.
“He broke into the Foxes team under Sven, who obviously rated him and it was no surprise Wigan came in for him then.
“Rangers have got big Rob as well so they will have a bit of company. He is a great signing. He’s a top player and the right age. I’ve got no doubt they are three quality signings.”
Andy Lyons wasn’t bad either, although more of an inside forward than traditional winger, crackin left peg.
More a thought than a rumour ..
Wonder if Rosler comes in for any of his old players – thinking in particular of Huws .. ?
Before people are on my back saying “give him a chance” etc, Ive seen him quite a few times down the years, most recently obviously when we played Blackpool. What I remember about him is he does a hell of a lot of running around huffing and puffing, stays close to the man with the ball, but doesn’t actually do anything – never seems to actually get the ball.
Hope Im proved wrong next season.
I think the other thing that wont have helped the situation is the timing of the thing – he other week there was all that hoo-ha TIYL Boyce celebration pary … then the next week hes basically told hes not good enough. TBH I would be pretty “miffed” if it happened to me.
Yup, sounds like it ….
“WIGAN Athletic suffered their first bloody nose of the off-season after failing to secure the services of South Korean international Kim Bo-Kyung.
The 25-year-old’s expected departure was confirmed yesterday after a short but sweet three-month stay at the DW Stadium.
Latics were very much open to the possibility of keeping hold of the playmaker to aid their attempts to get out of League One at the first attempt next term
But it’s understood the figures being bandied around by the player’s representatives made any efforts to broker a deal impossible.
Latics were also keen to keep hold of Cameroon internationmal left-back Gaetan Bong on a permanent basis, but he looks set to exercise his options as a free agent and move on”
Would be nice if we could continue with positive news from the chairman, maybe we can sign Kimbo and Pennant up even before the Brentford game, now we know where we are at for next season. I would be pleased with that.
Bloody Hell, what do you want from the lad ? He’s only just taken over, still settling in.. and what do you want him to say ? State the obvious ? He knows the position we are in as well as we do, what do you want him to say that will make you feel better ? I’m sure after our fate is sealed he will talk to us and tell us his plans for the future, but until this horrible horrible season is done with, then don’t expect anything.
well hopefully we can do a bit of both, top up the coffers but also invest in the squad, the longer we stay in League 1 the harder it will be to get out of.
not sure about that Garswood. We got our biggest earners off the payroll a while back and we are supposively self sustainable now so dont see why we shouldnt spend the cash on the squad. agreed crowds will be down though.
Didnt we have someone called Nugent and someone called Furlong ? Remeber these from the Springfield park days came through as YTS lads.
