Yes, listening to Gerald Sinstadt, it would have been March 1986.
I do not know when, or care, when the rugby played Castleford, but he refers to Everton signing Warren Aspinall, which was on 4 February 1986.
The piece featured both Latics and Wimbledon, which is a ‘tennis town’, who were going for and achieved promotion to the first division finishing third behind Norwich and Charlton. Latics were going for promotion from the third division but finished fourth behind Reading, Plymouth and Derby the year before play offs were introduced.
I don’t know why Doris was invited by the BBC for opinions on Wigan Athletic. As the ‘let’s all be friends’ brigade point out ‘They are two different sports?’ They didn’t ask Boris Becker for comments about Wimbledon.
It was prior to Latics QF with Leeds and a reference to the travelling support to Wembley in 1985.
The word I used was animosity. The Doris comment was 1987, therefore supporters who were 15 or so would now be 50 years old. Dead or very close to it?
‘Lindsey was the start’
Without sounding like an echo, no he wasn’t. I suppose it depends how old you are and how your memory is.
‘a hatred of the rugby from the 1980s.’
There is a misconception that the animosity between Latics and the rugby commenced following Doris comments in the late 80s. It was established long before that.
Aye, but how much are the lodgers paying?
There are ‘big’ clubs (92 of those), bigger clubs (plenty of those too) and the biggest clubs (ask Sky who these are). The problem is there are only 20 places to fill in the Premier League.
Let’s hope the light at the end of the tunnel is not a fire.
“Staff gave us an old bottle of wine…” I thought wine was supposed to be old?
That’s because their not hooligans and can be trusted to keep 2m apart and not shout, spreading germs. It’s the family game you know.
Always look on the bright side of life.
Been watching Sunderland Till I die on Netflix. Deadline day and after meeting the £1m asking price, Stuart Donald somehow ends up paying £3m. Everyone, from the manager to the head of recruitment to the Chief Exec was telling him to put his phone away because he simply isn’t worth any more than £1.25m.The rest is history, but boy was Mr Donald taken for a mug that night.
Oh dear what a shame never mind.
Forget Liverpool, Leeds Albion etc for a minute and let’s spare a thought for Barrow. Voted out at the expense of either Hereford or Wimbledon early 70s. Nobody knows better than Latics how hard it was to gain league status. It would be absolute heartbreak if they cannot finish the season and dont take their deserved place bank in league football after such a long absence.Gaining league status is different now. They were successfully re-elected to the Football League after finishing rock bottom of Division 4 in 1970–71, We thought we were nailed on to get elected that season, so we certainly wouldn’t have been sympathetic then. However, the following season, 1971–72 was to be Barrow’s last as a Football League club and after a failed bid for re-election, Barrow were voted out of the Football League, to be replaced by Hereford (China bulls instead of a biro!). It would be tough, but another good season and they’re in. We had to wait another seven years before being the last club to be elected into the league.
‘The only two certainties of this season is that Liverpool have won it and Bolton are going down.’
But that’s a problem, they’re not. Probable, but not certainties. Liverpool have lost 4 out of their last 6 games. Bolton can get to 50 points.
I wonder if he was on the Unsworth’s coach.
