but what do i know ? i have only been watching football for 45+ years

    And still learned nowt! :)

You’re right, not all ex-pros know everything. But they have probably forgotten more about football than 99% on this board will ever know about football.

And yes, you’re in the 99%

And what would he know, useless ex-professional footballer that he is?

No, I would rather listen a bunch of know-nowts on here, to be honest.

It might all go horribly wrong eventually, but I’m not about to panic after 4 league games, almost 2 of which were very promising performances (Villa, half a United, and around half an Everton)

“…A lot relies on us winning the right to host it”

Jayt, I have to say – I think absolutely EVERYTHING relies onus winning the right to host it :geek:

why is it that anybody who says a bad word against DW gets shot down on here ??

    Because is usually uninformed pap

Didn’t go to the game today but, from the bits I heard on Radio City, the Everton lads who commentate on their were very positive about Gomez. OK, I only heard about 20 minutes, it has to be said.

Last week Valencia provided the cross to start the rout. This week Baines scores to defeat us. Carry on like this and it will be Wigan Athletic v Ex Wigan Athletic.
Dave Whelan!

You never answered my question the other week…

What job did Whelan sack/make you redundant from?

Has he screwed your wife/boyfriend? ;)

There’s absolutely nothing we can do about it. I know I’ll get cut down for saying it, but Sunderland are a more established club than Wigan, and offer a more attractive proposition to a player.

When is the last time you heard about a Wigan player leaving the club kicking and screaming after being forced out, or a player rejecting a move and opting to pledge his future to us?

Sunderland can pay more money per week, and have a more realistic chance of qualifying for European football – albeit sometime in the future.
If they want to go, they’ll go, and I’d put money on Figueroa not being a Wigan player by the end of the transfer window.

Which is fair enough, IF we get a replacement in place by Teusday as back up/replacement in addition to Edman. If not, then the lad should be made to wait until January.

I personally dont believe a word that comes out of his mouth. You can defend him Griff and what you say about the independent quote does make sense but why come out with patriotic rubbish like that in the first place ? The Prem was already a hot bed for foreign imports and he was just being plain stupid coming out with that. It is like his sanctimonious rant on TV about the national side getting a foreign manager, next thing ya know he has got one in for us ! Then he is on TV again and its all over the papers ” Lee Cattermole is definitely NOT FOR SALE ” Next thing ya know he has gone ! I truly think now that this club is collapsing from within and players are jumping ship, ie Brown, Figueroa and also the aforementioned Cattermole ! There are too many people still looking up to him for his past endeavors to the club but as you just quoted Griff things can change in 5yrs and in my opinion Whelan has changed for the worse ! I am not green or stupid not to know that the sale of Springfield Park lined his pockets handsomely and that deep down he is looking after No.1 and ya cant blame him , most of em are but he is making a mockery out of this club now and it is time he moved on to pastures greener because if you cant see whats happening Griff, I can ! I haven’t jumped on a “Whelan out” bandwagon, I have observed certain things and formed a totally lucid opinion of him and everybody is entitled to their respective opinions on here so I am merely sharing mine ! Some will no doubt lambaste me while others will agree !

The man is stubborn, sanctimonious, an undoubted liar and a media-whore who makes me cringe every time he appears on TV or in the papers and is bobbins trombone player. But so is Simon Cowell.

I would have absolutley no problem if he moved on, but to be replaced by who? And what guarantees do we have that the next guy would be any different. Personally, and I am coming from the perspective of a fan of the club, I think that on balance, he has done more good than harm to this club.

As for the Cattermole thing, that happens all the time. Look at Lescott. If a player wants to go he will go. The Chairman’s job in that scenario is to get the best price possible and saying he is not for sale at any price is a standard negotiating tactic.

Sadly, that’s what I have gone for, too. Head before heart, and all that.

My head got the better of my heart last week and i did Utd win 3-0 4-0 and 5-0 Money can be a great leveller ! 22-1 @ £5 not bad ! Only 22-1 says it all though eh ![/quote]

    Good for you.

If it had gone on much longer the score might have been 22-1 :(

Agree Canvey Island but look what happened after that in was onwards and upwards, gossip has it that Whelan went into the drssing room after that game and told all the senior pro’s that Jewell was the man and they could all f*** off.On talk sport yesterday they aired the interview with Ian Holloway who said his players listened to him ,but all the touchline instructions from Martinez were seemed to be ignored by Wigan players either they could not understand or prepared to ignore make your own conclusion, but is there a troublemaker in the camp?

Wrong mate, that was after the Wrexham defeat in the auto-windscreens, or whatever it was called then.

Perhaops, now is the time for him to visit the dressing room again.

Knowing nothing about it at all, but if I had to pick a nigger* in the woodpile, I would point the finger at Scharner. Totally unfounded accusation of course, but that would be my guess if I had to pick one.

    * can you still use that phrase?

in reply to: Dave Whelan quote from Independent May 2005 #7108
Refreshingly, Whelan is not a devotee of importing talent. “What I don’t want to do is find money for foreign players who come here with the attitude of, ‘I want the money’. They bring great skills but they have also taken a hell of a lot of money out of our game, and some of them haven’t given value for money. What you get from most home-grown players is effort, and some of the foreign lads don’t give 100 per cent. Not all, but some.”

While acknowledging that Sam Allar-dyce has manufactured a successful side out of imports and loans at Bolton, Whelan claimed: “Sam has been brilliant. He has had a go. He has done deals, and while some have worked for him, others have been a complete waste of time. Who wants to watch foreigners every week? I don’t mind one or two, but not seven or eight. There should be a limit on foreign players, and if we get up I want to sign good young Brits where I can.”
What happened Dave ? Full proof of another deceitful lie !

Or, things change and Whelan has realised that actually bringing in young, cheap British talent is a pipe dream, doesn’t work and he has changed his policy accordingly. Bringing in youg, cheap central Americans is the way to go. Until they wise-up too and club scouts move on to the next big untapped market, which will probably be the Middle East.

That’s not a lie. Anyone who has the same business policy and strategy in 2009 that he had in 2005 is likely to fail.

in reply to: Prater Yed is back again #7107
    You can see it now!

Steve Bruce: ‘I want Figgy. How much do you want for him Dave?’

Dave Whelan: ‘He’s not for sale’

    SB: ‘£5m?’

DW: ‘Make it £3m over 10years with add-ons and you’ve got yourself a deal’

    See ya Fig.

You missed the bit in the middle where Figgy’s agent goes to Whelan to inform him that his client his deeply unhappy, cannot settle in Wigan and would like to move to a climate closer to his Honduran habitat. Therefore, he would appreciate it very much if the Sunderland bid is taken seriously as it is Figgy’s dream move. Oh, or you could bump up his wages to about £60k per week and suddenly the weather in Wigan would seem acceptable after all.

Oh, here you go, here is a barrel for you to spread-eagle yourself over, Mr Whelan

The word “looked” described what I saw last night. What he did last season means jackshit i’m afraid Griff.

Fair point, I’d agree with that.

Don’t think I’ll get it past wife but

Sounds like a Paul Dalglish penalty.

    Enjoy your break
