Yep exactly like Bolton who are a relic from the 1930’s and the Warriors are involved in a tough but parochial sport. About as relevant as gaelic football or aussie rules.
I don’t hate the sport or the team Mutty. I hate the fans because they live in the past like BWFC they’re obsessed with history. Nat fucking Lofthouse , Billy fucking Boston wow wee etc etc To quote Henry Ford I don’t give a fuck about ‘History’. Apart from the History we are making here and now as a once non league team that is now living the dream.
Times have changed, for every mention of the Warriors on Latics websites, you’ll find dozens about Latics on Warriors sites.
Really? Unless C&W has the most zealous moderating, then there’s hardly a mention of football on there, unlike threads like this that spring up pretty regularly.
So why do Wigan folk hate Wigan Warriors?
Lindsay. What he said in the 80’s about “little club and backyard” was at best immature. It was insulting to the loyal supporters of the football club and someone in his position should not have said it.
Latics not being allowed to use CP. I’m not sure of the exact history of this one, because I’ve heard two different versions. If it were a case of bloody mindedness (the blue version), then shame on the management company at the time. I have also heard that allowing the Latics to play Liverpool would have meant postponing a rugby fixture which was due to take place, and if thats the case then the refusal would be less of a crime than what DW did to the Warriors over the playoff game, when there was no clash – just the threat of him having to pay groundstaff overtime.
However, I feel that the real reason some folk hate Wigan Warriors is because they have history – over 100 years of it. They’ve arguably been the most successful sporting club side in living memory. They won their league 7 times in a row and the cup 8 times in a row. They have been World Club Champions 3 times.
You can call them “lodgers”, “tennants”, “cuckoos”, “chubbies”, “fatties”, “egg-chasers” all you like, but you cannot wipe out their history. They may be playing in “your” stadium, putting up flags in “your” stand, but like it or not, they are there and will continue to be there.
You dont like them because they have tasted the success you crave. They have ridden through Wigan on an open-top bus, parading trophy after trophy to thousands of cherry & white decorated Wiganers, all of them proud in the way those 13 lads put the town of Wigan on the map.
You dont like them because they have a side with home-grown talent in it, many of whom were supporters a few years ago. They know what its like to be a fan, and give 100% for the shirt. Whilst they have a few foreign players, they dont have a side packed with immigrant mercineries who do not give a flying fcuk about the town.

He was just blowing smoke up their ring piece. Outsiders like him and that horrible Jock McCartney tend to make a beeline for the Warriors. The mayor and council have always supported them and wallowed in photo opportunities whilst being openly hostile towards us. Although Lord Haw Haw Smith has recently acknowledged our nationwide profile has brought some positive publicity to the borough.
The proof being the council leaning on the police to mess things up for us and imposing ridiculous safety notices on us at Springfeld Park.
However, yep you’re right the remark about not hating the Labour Party was tongue in cheek.

wigans mp comes from carlisle originally and lived on park road in wigan for over 20 years before he became an mp and always went to watch the rugby so hardly a bandwagon jumper.

Why is it an insult though?. We are just a small town but like them we punch above our weight therefore we have a right to be proud. Bolton fans have more dignity than Utd’s pot hunting cosmopolitan tosseurs.

If I had more time I’d go. But I have kids, wife and I’m just too jaded to go even though its 2 hours in the car . Feck, we’ve got people coming round tonight for a meal and I feel guilty for not going but I’m not a kid anymore.

Martinez is responsible for a lot of things – bad crowds arent one of them.That is down to bone idle Wiganers who want everything handed to them on a plate and would probably moan that they’d had to pay their bus fair to get to the ground if it was free to get in and there was a free pint waiting for them on entry.
