I think if you actually read anything that was said at the beginning of the season or from November, Roberto never mentioned ‘improving on last season’s final position’.
So, when he said
“The club has done incredibly well over the past five years, firstly getting into the Premier League and staying there, last year not only staying there but pushing higher up the table, I want to carry on the good work Steve Bruce did here.”
or
“So much has changed at the club and there have been fantastic improvements both on and off the pitch, I am really looking forward to working again with the Chairman and everyone at the club and I am sure we can build on what has already been achieved”
in July 2009, he didnt mean “improve on last season’s 45 points and 11th place in 2010”.

Maybe I should ask him if he realises that even with a record low points score in this league he still managed to clock up more points than Sunderland did in two whole seasons, so things could have been a lot worse. You could ask him that, or you could ask him a question that is relevent. I would suggest that 35pts and 16th place in 2010 vs 45pts and 11th place in 2009 represents a failure, and with that in mind, will a 13th place finish with 40pts in 2011 represent a success?[/quote]
As I said, he never once said that he would be ‘improving on last season’s final position’ – he said would like to carry on the good work done. We have stayed in the league, which was his first target and now he wants to start on the next part of his plan which is to try for a mid/top half position.
Staying in the league was the target – we acheived that and so it certainly isn’t a failure is it.
Now starting the season gloating that we would be top half/Europe contenders, and only getting 17 or 19 points in an entire season, that isn’t what I call success, plus it certainly doesn’t give me the right to go on to a team’s sites that I don’t support and call the shots.
I think I would prefer to ask him my question.

Thanks.How about:
“You have just overseen a season with the lowest points tally (assuming 3 or less points from last 2 games) in 5 premiership seasons. Do you feel you have failed, considering your aim at the start of the season was to improve on last season’s final position”?

He had a three year plan of which the first year was to stay in the Premier League whilst changing the whole ethos at the football club (with regards to training, scouting and most importantly, the way we play).
Maybe I should ask him if he realises that even with a record low points score in this league he still managed to clock up more points than Sunderland did in two whole seasons, so things could have been a lot worse.

I’ve just checked and he said (on top half/Euro finish), “he did specify that we will be looking to have the squad and the performances to get us to that next level within the next two to three years.”
I await with baited breathe the comments from the dark side that are going to pick on every sentence in that report – tin hat is on

Well lets see, I pay for the upkeep of the site, with the help of a few others I edit the site and with the help of a couple more I moderate the site. I roughly spend as much time doing this site as I do in my everyday job without the pay. So yes, I would say I have every right to have my own set of rules.
I reiterate that there is not only me that makes this sacrifice….
