Not the fault of the club, Whelan or Martinez that Filmoss. I read yesterday on Twitter that some “Wiganer” was going to the match to watch his home town team hopefully beat City so that we could do “us” a favor..
..wasn’t until I seen the “Love MUFC” at the bottom that I got what he was saying!
16k is crap…a few of my mates stayed in the pub coz it was cold but this seems to be the norm these days…
well its a catch 22 then, Nobody turns up so why should Whelan bankroll it (Personally I think Whelan cares a lot still)…we sell our best players to make ends meet, we have to make do with players who cost under £5M and won’t exceed 25k a week and may not be as good as players who cost £10M and £60k a week…Other teams are buying £7M+ players and up to 200k a week in wages.
We get the club out of debt by weakening Whelans share position but this has an impact on what we can invest in the club.
…so in a very unfair league…its unfair.
The people who do think that whelan should “get his wallet out” I ask you this. If you are being paid well at work and can just about manage your bills and mortgage…would you go out to a bank and borrow £50k for a new car…or may be several new cars, in hope that one day everything will be ok????
if no, why would you expect Whelan to do the same?
I don’t think it is lack of passion, fight and commitment, it was plain to see yesterday with the tackles going in and the running our players were doing show that there is fight and passion. The problems are pretty straight forward..
(1) We are good in midfield but as soon as we get near the box, nobody will take responsibility for having a go on goal or organising an attack. The only person who has been “having a go” is Moses and often he takes the wrong option…which the crowd makes their opinions known.
(2) Zonal marking clearly isn’t working for us. We need to be toe to toe with their main threats from set pieces and run of play. Caldwell may not be the most gifted defender but he shows commitment and does his best to organise the back. I think Al Habsi needs to be a bit more vocal.
I think we do have fight and passion and I do think we will get out of this. I can make excuses up like the rest of my fellow lightsiders but the facts are simple in this league:
No Investment = No Sucesses
I thought last nights game was entertaining and a much improved second half performance. I don’t get why a lot of people are getting on Martinez’s back over last night, yep, City didn’t have all their players back but they had Aguero, Silva and Dzeko upfront, 2 England Internationals and a French International in midfield, and English International in the goal and other good premiership players….and obviously we should be beating them FFS!
I think it has been tough on teams similar to ourselves and while an unexpected result does occur now ant then, the likes of us, Bolton, Wolves, Blackburn etc.. are finding it difficult to attract good players at affordable prices, and lets be honest, we are a point or two away from all the teams just mentioned….a very fine line. I summarise this…
Swansea and Norwich are on 1st season premiership highs
Stoke play longball…but do heavily invest in their squad and fill 27k every week
Fulham fill 25k every week and have one of the richest men in retail at the helm
QPR will come good at the end of the season due to their billionaire owner
Everton and West Brom are slowly slipping down
The top 6 have revenues that we can only dream of and invest heavily in their squads
The likes of Newcastle, Villa, SunderlandWe would need to invest heavily to keep up with teams such as Stoke, Fulham etc…but where would the money come from? After seeing a pathetic 16k for a game against City, why should Whelan fork out again when the people of Wigan are sitting in pubs and supporting any other team other than Wigan?
It’s not Martinez’s fault, its not Whelan’s fault….it is what it is…..
If we can get a good loan Striker with proven track record, we might start climbing up. It would be nice to have a Yakubu player…not graceful but someone who can knock into defences and knows where the goal is.
If Rodallega would have scored 7 more goals this season, we wouldn’t be where we are now…
We might go down…but in 2005, if I said we would be in the Premiership for 7 years….I would have been sectioned!
Will do….ta
I agree….this would be good and would save some typing
I have been a bit reluctant to post anything on here as it looks like good sensible debate has gone out of the Window….anyway:
Problem is that Whelan has just got the club out of debt (hasn’t he??) So why would he put the club back in debt to purchase additional resorces?
Our other main problem is we can’t defend….we need a partnership (been mentioned already on here) like we had with Hencoz & DeZeew….Bramble & Sharner. I watched the game on Sunday and thought we were the better team. We were the better team against Fulham and Newcastle. Its very frustrating as we never seem to be able to defend anything. We looked like a threat going forward and it was the first glimmer of how we play 4-3-3 when we have the ball and are attacking. I think the reason we missed our chances is that we have zero confidence…and probably hitting the post so many times looks like we will never score. I would also bring back Boselli and push him to do better…seems we are going soft on players.
I think we need 2 central defenders who can speak the native language and can communicate. I would dump Gohouri, Alcaraz and Figs and bring in Van Anolt at left back. Play Watson and jones with McArthur as holding midfielder and play Rodders, Moses and DiSanto…I would bollock DiSanto (Bruce/Jewell style) as I think he has it in him to be a great player, but thinks he is Lionel Messi at times…
…I feel sorry for Bob and I am a supporter of Bob but he needs to be screaming at his players in the way Jewell and Bruce would have done. I am Lightside but have to admit, I think he should go if we don’t pick up the three points against Blackburn as something needs to change within the club if we are to make it to next season in the Prem.
Dont think it was him loosing his head, just slow getting to the ball because of match fitness…should have been taken off and replaced….but nobody could cover his position.
its a great shame…I thought he was a cracking footballer and was a breath of fresh air when he came into the England squad…
Would love to see him in a Latics shirt but how many apperances would he make in a season…5? he would have to be on something like a tenner a game or something..
on the other side, I wonder if Mr Whelan would get his PR machine rolling with offering something?
cant say have really studied it until now…….looked ok on my blackberry!
I thought it was a cracking kit and with a good company sponsoring the shirt…….another fake it is
Let’s be honest, most of the “quotes” would have been lost in translation and made to sound a bit detrimental to the club. I think he probably said something like “I always give 200% to the club and will do if I stay” and also “I want to be in a team challenging for honours rather than being in a relegation battle” – we have been in a relegation battle for 2 years….
The club isn’t stupid – there is a chance nZogbia would run down the last year of his contract and go for nothing so if he won’t sign a new deal, he will be sold…
What’s wrong with a bit of ambition…he wants to play for France and has a better chance if he is in a top 6 club in Europe….
…but Champions league material…as good as nZogbia is, he will need to start thinking about passing the ball more often…not sure if he would be a regular started for a Champions League tem
…but good luck to him anyway – whatever you think, he got us out of the deep stuff for two years!!
I disagree – we need to approach the game with the same team as we started with against Wet Spam. I think we were setup nicely in the 1st half apart from a few wayward passes and our defence being asleep.
We can always bring on Moses and Sammon later for the plan B – the thing about Rodellega is his stamina….he was one of the only people who was still able to run round at the final minutes…even Sammon looked fooked.
To play with the team now would be a mistake – we need to get at Stoke quickly and defend well from aerial bombardment and pass them to death!!
dont know if we played the full first team, I can only see Gomez, S. Caldwell, Moses and Sammon (who I think scored for us)

Guy on TalkSport said he has been impressed with Salmon, tall and strong striker who knows where the net is. Says he has pace and said he was a cross between Andy Carrol and John Hartson. He was also tracked by both Celtic and Rangers. He also said he singled handedly ripped apart Rangers and scored a couple against them.
Looking forward to seeing him.
