Since when has 442 been about long ball??!! Long ball is more a managerial tac tic..

If the game is played with a good tempo and players get forward into the box at every available opportunity then formation shouldn’t matter too much.

And there’s something to be said for the keeper sending the ball long at times. Especially when you give soft goals away for needless passing around the back.

If you look back to the traditional twin strikers, there was always a big un to pump the ball to and a little un to feed off him. So yes 4-4-2 was traditionally a formation for getting the ball forward quickly and regularly to the big No 9.
Despite being a young man, IMHO DS really has a good knowledge of the game.
Not entirely true JR, there have been many front two pairings that were anything but long ball. Bergkamp & Henry, cole & Beardsley , Sutton & Shearer so the 442 formation doesn’t mean long ball for me. What you refer to is managerial tac tic.

Anyhow, it’s not up front we need to be worrying about, it’s the defence.

Brian Clough the best English manager never to manage England.

Probably, very true.

Always liked Clough, great character.

He should have really been given a go at the England job round about 1980 when he was winning everything. But he was too outspoken for the FA men..

But if he had of been given a go then we’d never have had Bobby Robson, The best England manager in my time.

Imagine how GC would feel if his wish was implemented here, only for some German/Italian/Spanish side to then come along and buy Will Grigg the week before their season started.

In that case, scrap the windows altogether and revert back to the original transfer system of being able to buy players whenever you want/need them. This system of only knowing your team/squad by the start of September is ridiculous.
Clubs will still be able to say NO if they don’t wish to sell their star players.
The original system also annoyed managers as a transfer saga could go on and on and on…. The transfer window is good in principle but needs adjusting to end before the season starts.
And why we’re on it, agents should be scrapped, they create most of this merry go round and take a big wedge of money out of football.

He did Bullitt, but that doesn’t excuse his poor passing. Can’t think of Power ever being utilized on the wing before?

Powell wasn’t great either for me.

I guess it could be Jussi in the goals. Garbut or Byrne for left back but what about Warnock.
Burke at Right back. Morgan and Buxton as central defenders. Perkins Power Gilbey Wildshut in midfield. Jacobs and then Grigg.
Powell Gomez McDonald Hunt LeFondre Bogdan etc on the bench.
Seems simple enough but guess someone will have to play out of position to accommodate another defender.

Defo go for Jussi as Bogdans distribution is abysmal.

As for midfield, would replace Perkins & Power with Mcdonald & Gomez personally. Thought Power had a poor game against QPR, passing was poor.

Don’t be surprised if Swansea, Bournemouth, Palace, Hull Burnley and Watford are the bottom six. If I had to choose I would have Hull bottom Burnley second bottom and Watford third relegation spot.

I think Burnley might have the best chance of that lot to stay up? They’ve got two handy strikers in their team which just might make a difference.
Bournemouth are playing well but no picking up points. That is more of a concern and I do think they will go down.

Yans pace is a massive asset even if his finishing or final ball isn’t up to scratch. His pace can also draw opposition players out of position leaving gaps for our other attacking players.
Love to see him as an out and out winger with an out and out left back connecting with him or overlapping. Maybe with two strikers too.
I have heard rumours that managers and coaches are trying this new kind of formation. It’s called 4-4-2 and it sounds like it is going to take football by storm.

This formation topic goes on at all levels of footy Donny. Watched Weymouth play Redditch last week and their fans were moaning about not playing 442… :)
They too had one up front.

Exactly the same happened at Bristol Argus. Yanic swapped wings and even went up front but still nothing.
If that will be a regular tactic by opposing teams then he needs others playing off him.

Only seen one game so far an at Bristol Burn didn’t seem too bad. But heard a lot of others say he is poor? Watched the highlights of the Forrest game and his attempted back pass was a real shocker.. Pearce will be a big miss, didn’t someone say he’d fallen out with Caldwell?

Yanics pace is his best asset, his close control / skill isn’t that good. Once the team settles and he plays a regular position on the wing he might become a bit more consistent.

Yep it was me that said that Pearce had a fall out with Caldwell after a pre season friendly.
Next thing we know he was on his bike to Charlton to be near his family.
The lad was gutted when leaving, dont believe everything the club says to the press.
Ok cheers Bullitt. Thought it odd when I first heard the story. Must have been some fall out to get rid of your best defender! GC’s paying a price at the mo.
I hope he gives jack Hendry a run out, could be his saviour as he looks good, on first first impression anyway.

Can’t see us taking many at them prices.

For me ticket pricing should be based on like for like and not what the max home supporter ticket price is. Wigan need cheap pricing to attract fans where as Wednesday don’t. We should be able to charge them £33 each when at our price..

Why would a rugby wind up merchant put people off posting on a WAFC forum?
Aggressive replies would for sure, but most of them appear on the aforementioned.

Quality of initial post might play a part?
