Also in my opinion, midfield is the problem.
And you only make a weak midfield even weaker by taking away one of the midfielders and putting another striker on.
Instead of one striker getting no service, you end up with two getting even less service.
Why bring in an extra striker. If you are going to drop one of our holding midfielders, simply replace with our most creative attacking midfielder – senor gomez who would create opportunities.
Im agreeing with quite a few comments on here. I too have often wondered why in that 2009 season, we were 7th i think & going along quite nicely. Then come january, we sold off palacios & valencia & replaced with players not as good & on the “cheap”. That bruce team was by far our best premier league team.
I also agree with super stu barlow re: jewell. He did inherit sh1t & with time took us on what was to be the start of our greatest period in our history.
Bullitt, i have posted that comment re; caldwell before & have just posted something similar again on facebook. I think he was sacked too hastilly, & i worry sometimes if he is going to be as idiotic (IMO) as his grandad (at times) with his hiring & firing as managers. But we move on.
Would love to know who this head of recruitment is & wonder if he/she is going to be any good at what they do.
Caldwell was sacked too hastilly IMO & i am certain that in the back of his mind, young sharpie now regrets that decision.
Who says he is bringing in the Utd wonder kids?
Watch this space!!
Watched Blackburn ans they lost too but a cracking game and at least they tried to win the game rather go down that way.The answer then is simple. David sharpe bring back coyle NOW!!!!
Had his time again would he have played Gary Teale up front on his own and had Nathan Ellington and Jason Roberts sat on the bench!!!
This is how ludicrous our modern game has become.Hahahahaha!! Not sure if you were around in the early 90’s donny. But i do remember bryan hamilton playing a striker (gary worthington) on the left wing & a left winger (bryan griffiths) up front. The latter also being one of the smallest players i can think of to have played for us.
If i remember (but don’t quote me), the system worked once then failed miserably thereafter.
It makes no difference whatsoever on a teams formation, nor does it matter on whether a team plays with 1, 2, 3, 4 or more strikers. How can 442 magically transform things. We currently have a manager that is playing to avoid defeat as opposed to “going for it” Cue my point at the beginning of my sentence.
Runcorn, if you play without strikers it allows the opposition to press high up the field snuffing out your plans to play, twin strikers give your opponents something to think about and they have to defend a lot deeper obviously affecting their attacking flair. Attack is always the best form of defense.
I agree with the last bit of your sentence. But it makes no difference whatsoever how many strikers are played. If/when played correctly, the 4231 formation can just be as exciting & attacking as any other. The problem is that at the moment we have a manager who is simply playing to avoid defeat. Lets see what happens in january when he brings in the “wonder”kids from utd.

Very true Ray but if we had have attacked Villa and had a go and still lost less fans would be upset. It seems alien to Little Wigan to sit back and take it and hit them on the break from the kick off. There are times you are under the cosh and have to defend and hit a side on the break but to start with these intentions is something none of us have seen before. Little Wigan have always had a go and feared no side and that was even when we were shit!!Donny, with all due respect to yourself, i have always considered you as one of our more negative fans. On this occassion however, i 100% agree with you.
Ray, with all due respect to yourself, it makes no difference to me what league either team was in last season. What is frustrating me is the fact that we are playing in a way to avoid defeat (& even that is failing), as opposed to at least having a go.
However, in fairness to what crammy has said. Maybe joyce is seeing out this month & will be bringing in “his” players come january as he doesn’t rate those he has. Afterall, he might have people in mind who can play to the system he wants, & hence, results will hopefully improve.
I am not panicking yet. We are within touching distance of those around us & i for one will be happy with a 4th from bottom finish come the end. But personally, i just want to see an end to the boring negative tactics that IMO, were a lot worse than the ones (that according to some on here), adopted by caldwell. Apart from one lucky result, it aint working.
GC was slated for being too defensive & negative since we came back to the championship. But I was starting to feel that things (albeit slowly) were turning around.
What has frustrated me about joyce so far, is despite the promise of playing quick, attacking football, his style of football has taken defensive & negative football to a whole new level.
Well i for one was surprised we let him go. Yes, he wasn’t outstanding nor did he stand out. But what he did was a solid professional job IMO.
Week spots were Jordi and Power.According to tommy gore on WISH, power had a cracking game.
Thanks for the concern mate, but this is a fans forum and me being a Latics fan entitles me to air my views, nothing wrong with what i wrote just my feelings on Powell and the managers team selection.According to some on here fans shouldn’t barrack or boo players on the pitch or have a go on a forum, so what are fans meant to do just sit back and put up with it?
You pay your money you have your say!
You are entitled to your opinion, of course you are. What im saying is try & avoid labelling people in deogatory terms, thats all.
Careful bullitt. You’ll end up being kicked out again.
Bigroy. I agree with you. Joyce has only been here 2 games (although IMO young sharpie was too hasty in his sacking of GC), so give the man time.
TBH i would have settled for a draw beforehand. What i don’t understand is the reason for playing no strikers. Methinks things are not right with grigg at the moment.
