Leaving aside my bias for a club I’ve supported for 50 years it pains me to say that the appointment of Mackay, with the investigation still hanging over him, and more importantly the subsequent PR disaster that was Whelan has irreparably damaged the club.
This ain’t going away anytime soon.
In the midst of all this furore concerning Wigan Athletic, They sneakily see their chance to sever ties with Ched Evans this morning leaving the media attention to focus firmly on Whelan. Not heard a peep from Sheff Utd today or the Ched Evans saga.
Whelan really does have a knack of dropping himself in it. But this time he has dragged the town with it and given Lisa Nandy another headache.
As I said in another post, could this not be a ploy by DW to deflect the wolves away from Malky, in the same way you have suggested Sheff U have with releasing Ched Evans?
If that was Whelan’s ploy then it has spectacularly backfired.
Anyone remember a few seasons back when we played liverpool at the DW & all the scousers, oops sorry liverpudlians, oops sorry, people from liverpool were all wearing those suarez t-shirts. He was banned for racist remarks. I believe he apologised, the matter was forgot about & everyone moved on. Why cant we as a club, dave whelan & more importantly malky mckay be allowed now to move on. They’ve all apologised so everyone should forget about it & as i say, move on.
Yeah but how many of us here weren’t having a pop at Liverpool when they stood by him eh? Funny what happens when the shoe’s on the other foot.
I have a feeling that boro fans might have a pop at us tomorrow. But after a while everyone forgot about suarez. Same might happen with our situation
Rape or murder someone eventually you will be forgiven…say one remark with racist undertones you will never be forgiven..not a chance no matter how many times you apologise. I can DW retiring and handing the riegns over, watch this space.
Forgiven by who?
I think you need to engage you brain before spouting such nonsense.Anyone remember a few seasons back when we played liverpool at the DW & all the scousers, oops sorry liverpudlians, oops sorry, people from liverpool were all wearing those suarez t-shirts. Can I just pick up on your exemplar of “Till Death Us Do Part”?
The whole point of that programme was the unacceptability of Alf Garnett’s views. I would not in the slightest feel uncomfortable watching that, as you suggest. He was then, as now, deemed an unacceptable racist whose views were condemned. That was the point. We, my generation, were prepared to tackle such issues head on – not drive such thoughts underground in case someone was offended, but confront the issues. Alf Garnett was no more acceptable then than now.
The 70s proramme that is on Channel 4 over the weekend misses the points completely, by people who are subtitled as being “viewer in the 70s” when they were probably 5 years old.
History is being rewritten.
Just wait till history judges TOWIE, Benidorm, Jeremy Kyle, et al.
Yes, I understand your point about Till Death Us Do Part but the words he used to describe black people in particular would be uncomfortable to hear today and indeed would not be allowed.
I also think the same could be said of Love Thy Neighbour; it was challenging the racial prejudices of the day. Having said that both these programs are unlikely ever to be repeated on mainstream TV.
There were moral undertones to the programmes and quite rightly so, but they were both bloody funny as well.
I thought they were funny too. However on the odd occasions snippets are shown – usually in documentary type offerings where admittedly the worst parts are aired to make a point – they are uncomfortable to watch.
Some episodes of Fawlty Towers are also a bit non-PC.

Yes, JR, I have mentioned that before. He did it for McManaman the other year. His support for “the tackle” drew flack away from Callum. The big story is now Whelan, leaving Mackay to get on with the real business of sorting out the team.
Is Whelan fussed? Not a bit.
I know people disagree with this viewpoint, but I suspect there’s a little bit of truth in it.
But then I am mad.
I think it’s gone too far and may well have caused irreparable damage to the club. Wigan Athletic run the risk of forever being labelled the racist club and any incident or misdemeanour with even a hint of racist connotations will be seized upon and result in the perpetuation of the racist tag.
No. David Gold is a porn baron. Gold group international made their fortune on it.
Still. What do I know? I’ve been going to Jimmy Chinks for years on Wigan Lane. What’s the difference between Brit and Chink?
Bang on Roy, I’ve always said you can only be a racist if you are white. A Pakistani can call me a Btit or someone from Stockholm a Swede but you use the forbidden word and your history. I once worked in a Coventry club which was owned and run by an Indian family so obviously the clientele was predominantly Indian. I know I was a victim of racism but who would fight my corner?, no one gave a flier not even myself as it is not the British way to moan. You are not allowed to make jokes at someone else’s expense anymore. I blame the Yanks. Oh sh.t I’m for the high jump now. :)
I doubt any British person has ever been offended by being called a “Brit” or a Swede being called a “Swede”.
The issue here is that the terms “Paki” & “Chink”, for example, have been and still are used in derogatory terms and that is why people of those ethnic backgrounds find it so offensive.
I should also add that I find it quite astounding that you need that explaining to you.
Sammy, you have completely missed my point. Of course I’m not offended being called a Brit and if somebody calls me white trash or any other names relating to my creed I’m not going to start screaming racism. Like Papa said we tolerate things more and brush it off. The problem today is that you will always find some PC nut or Radical will always jump on any chance to manipulate situations like Mr Whelan’s comments and use them to their own gains. Most right minded Jewish folk will not be offended by his comments yet one guy is likening him to the modern day Hitler. Take the “P” word you used, now surely it is just a shortened version of “Pakistani” yet as you say somewhere down the line someone has got on his soapbox and screamed “that’s offensive to me” so it is seen as derogatory to the Pakistani people. Certain groups are using the race card to fuel propaganda and I imagine that most people living in Pakistan have never even heard the “P” word. Take the problem at Spurs with their Jewish fans, some attention seeking individual or group have protested about the supporters taking the rip out of themselves.
The way I see it is it is not Race that is the problem anymore as we are now a multi cultural society it is the usage of Racism by some Ethnic factions that is. How we cure it is another thing. As a British National we are probably most discriminated against by our own leaders who let the Eurocrats in Brusselles make the laws that govern how we live today. Do we scream blue murder? No we come on here and discuss it. And most times end up having a slanging match :P :P
Nuneaton, if I’ve missed your point then I am confused as to what point you were trying to make.
White British people may very well be more tolerant of racist remarks directed at them but that doesn’t mean it’s OK to make racist comments towards others and then not expect to get called on it.
If we were to go back 40 years ago programmes such as ‘Till Death Us Do Part and Love Thy Neighbour made popular viewing. If you were to watch those programmes today you would, I hope, find them embarrassing and uncomfortable, not as a result of the rants of the politically correct or the radical but because people have moved on culturally and become more sensitive towards and more aware of how such content could cause offence.
The “P” word IS offensive to Pakistanis however you may try to dismiss it as “just” an abbreviation. And don’t you think that way back some black guy also stood on a soapbox and screamed “that’s offensive to me” when the words “nigger” and “coon” were used to describe him, words I assume you DO find offensive.
People will always try to make political mileage out of the race issue because they know they will seldom encounter any opposing views, which is why Whelan should have kept his big gob shut rather than try to make light of those pretty damming text messages Mackay made. I do agree that the so called anti-Semitic comments he made have been completely overhyped by the media. His attempt to justify the use of the word “chinky” is in my opinion much more objectionable.
As for curing things I certainly don’t think the comments and views of some on this board is how we should go about things.

How deep does he think this whole he’s digging has to be before it’s time to stop?Whelan is to PR as Hitler was to multiculturalism.
Somebody needs to tell him to shut the fuck up.“Whole”…..!!!! wtf

You don’t really need that explaining, do you?
How deep does he think this whole he’s digging has to be before it’s time to stop?
Whelan is to PR as Hitler was to multiculturalism.
Somebody needs to tell him to shut the fuck up.And people still don’t understand the way Whelan works.
At the end of the day is he bothered about what people say about him? No.
But is the furore about what Malky is alleged to have said becoming a big pressure point? Yes.
So what can the chairman do to ease the pressure? Maybe what he did when we had the McManaman/Newcastle affair? Say something that diverts pressure to himself.
Who can shrug it off.
I take your point but he’s drawing too much attention onto himself and the club now, especially as the sports pages have little to write about in the middle of an international break.
It is also interesting that the papers have placed more emphasis on his vague anti Semitic comments rather than the more controversial aspect of whether it’s OK to call the Chinese “chinks”. Then again you don’t have to try too hard to get yourself labelled as anti-Semitic these days.

Somebody needs to tell him to shut the fuck up.Bring it on….!
