What did you think of the rumour doing the rounds in 2020 that DW was the 3rd member of the local consortium that Ian Lenagan was trying to bring in for sporting Wigan (the other one being Danson), but he declined to be part of it.

I think it was just a rumour doing the rounds since Whelan is on record as saying he did not want to burden his family with owing a football club.

Great news for everyone – except of course Bullitt and Bickymon who now face a choice between eating humble pie and crawling back to their seats in the stadium now owned by a warriors co-owner, or fucking off for good.

Of course we’ll have to wait and see how this all pans out but isn’t this the same arrangement that existed when Whelan owned/had a stake in both clubs, which didn’t stop the persistent resentment from sections of the rugby supporters.
The situation as I see it right now is that Latics fans are grateful for someone – a someone who holds a stake in the rugby – to bail out the club. Twenty five years or so ago Whelan saved the rugby club from a similar fate but rather than recognise that fact and that he provided them with a ground in their home town they denounced him and tried to rewrite history.
If you think the animosity will go away as a result of current developments then you are sadly mistaken and the biggest whingers will be those same rugby fans who refused to acknowledge the fact that a football owning multi-millionaire saved them from oblivion whilst one of their own has now decided to save the towns football club.

I thought Whelan did own the rugby, or at the very least was the majority shareholder?

On the other hand I remember going to Huddersfield when they were in financial trouble and along with plenty other Latics fans putting a few quid in collection buckets as we went through the turnstiles.

Those looking to renew have just under two weeks to decide if they want to take up the cheapest option. If at that point the situation is still unclear regarding the intentions of the owner then I would certainly think it unwise to renew unless you are willing to risk kissing goodbye to £300/£400. In the grand scheme of things I seriously doubt any season tickets sales are likely to be enough to guarantee the viability of the club.

Taken from the “About Us” page of CL:

Cockney Latic is run by, written by and read by Latics fans and football fans from all over the world.

If Bickymon had his way it would read:

“Cockney Latic is run by, written by and read by Latics fans as long as they have a deep-rooted hatred of Wigan Rugby and any other football club. You may only post here about WAFC and anti-Wigan Warriors. All other opinions will result in instant bans”

You are tolerated on here despite being a self proclaimed Sunderland and WRLFC follower (I’m not sure if you regularly attend any games). You do post some interesting stuff at times but even though you’ve been on the end of many a good shoeing still persist, a persistence that would have you banned from every Warriors forum long ago as a Latics fan attempting to carry out the same agenda. What possible reason is there for you to be here except to wind up Latics fans? Is that your agenda? Is that what gets you through the day?
Many Latics fans have a deep rooted hatred of the rugby club and these are the places where they can vent that anger. If it bothers you that much I suggest your time would be better served by persuading the rugby forums to reverse their policy of “You may only post here about WRLFC and anti Latics. All other opinions will result in bans”.

Are we any nearer knowing the reason behind why they did this?

Could be worse, we could have Alisson in goal.

Just supposing Royle and/or Jackson had made it public would the outcome have been any different?
Still desperately looking for scapegoats aren’t we despite how tenuous they might be.

The administrators said it was the Spanish who pulled out because the EFL would not waive the 15 points deduction as a result of the reduced bid being insufficient to pay creditors the minimum amount. There was no mention of them rejecting the reduced bid which begs the question are they guaranteed to receive their full fee in the event of any sale?

I agree with you Sammy but when you look on other clubs forums and they are discussing Wigan it always seems to be why do the Latics fans hate the rugby so much ? We know it’s the other way around but with threads like this one and on other forums it only goes to justify their misguided opinion that we are the ones with a chip on our shoulder.

The best one line answer:”we hate them because they tried to kill us, they hate us because we exist.”

You might be right Bullitt but it’s how we are perceived by other clubs. We all know how it is in Wigan with the biased press etc but to anyone looking in from the outside it comes across as petty jealousy. As I say we are better than that ,let’s just enjoy the victory ,hope the takeover goes smoothly and then as we move back up the leagues we can bask in the glory and there’s nothing our Rugby neighbours or the press can do about it.

Jealousy? What have Latics fans to be jealous of? I agree it is difficult for other football fans to understand why we hold so much animosity towards them but that is because of their ignorance of the history behind it. An explanation on the reasons why should always be presented when the question is asked.

As these millionaires have never shown any interest towards the club, even when they were in the greed league, what makes you think they would give a shit now.

If you want to direct your anger correctly, perhaps you should look towards the 20,000 who were at Wembley in 2013, yet haven’t contributed a brass button towards the supporters’ club appeal.

The average donation is £120. If those 20,000 all chipped in just £50, that’s a cool million.
