You need good players to have a contingency plan and we didn’t meet that criteria…….
There are some on here who realised that and understood the constraints under which he was working. If it hadn’t been for the injuries to key defenders last season and/or the cup run we would still be a Premiership club.

I get a bee in my bonnet when O’Neill is mentioned in disparaging terms. I thought he was a good player for us but many treated him very much in a Gomez-esque type of way.
Martinez rearranged the team, taking off Jelavic and bringing on McCarthy. Mirrallas played up front on his own and Everton immediately looked much more secure.Impossible! Martinez doesn’t have a plan ‘B’. :cheer:
I will give anyone a CHANCE but what I’ve seen of him pre season and up to now, Apart from a fluke and a penalty, he hasn’t looked liked scoring. I can run faster and jump higher than he does and I’m twice his age. I remember a few years ago when we signed, I think it was O’Neil? from Portsmouth for a BIG FEE A few Latics fans were in a bar in Bournemouth a few weeks later, when they were down there to watch the Bournemouth Latics game and were talking to Ted McDougal. He told them that when the Latics people signed the paperwork and left the room all the Portsmouth directors burst out laughing. It’s quite ironic the number of people who now sing his praises and bemoan the fact he’s often bench warming rather than an automatic starter.
Maybe Martinez feels he owes Gareth Barry a debt of gratitude for the part he played in helping us win the FA Cup.
I think keeping Mcmanaman is even better. He will be excellent in this division.Only if he gets his head around the fact he can’t go tackling opposing players in mid-air.
