Go on then, name 3 worse teams than us? I’m not seeing it, myself.

Going off our current average, I predict we will end up with around 35 points.

You predicted we’d end up with less than thirty points two season’s ago – so I’m taking this as progress!
Yawn……

Can’t polish a turd, Standish. If you do, you get caked.

I predict we will hit 30 points around April 6th. That gives us about 6 games left to get enough points….can’t see us needing 40 points.

Same old same old…..8 game wonders. What I want to know is…….where the hell is the effort for the rest of the season?
And that’s the million dollar question. Whatever it is that goes on around February / March time, it should be bottled and sold.

Unlike previous seasons though, it looks like the effort is there, but unfortunately, so are the errors.
At the end of the day some fans are just happy with their lot even though it aint a lot ie club run on a shoestring but financial stability and others would have liked to have seen Uncle Dave take a gamble to back up his sound bites ! I am in the latter camp and so therefore will forever be disillusioned ! :S

Again this is just an opinion, but if some aren’t happy with the club and how it is run.. Why do they continue to support the team?? Surely they could support someone they would be ‘happy’ with.. But in all honesty I think some people just like complaining, simple as that.

And what do you recommend filmoss.. Do you want us to attempt greater things (That aren’t possible) and follow in the steps of the Glorious Portsmouth F.C etc??

I personally would prefer to watch and support my team, and see financial stability aswell.
Ah the old Portsmouth chestnut ! Don’t expect to ever finish in the top half then or expect the club to have enough depth in its squad to go on a good cup run because it will not happen ! I think I would prefer to compete on a more level playing surface and glean more satisfaction from our home performances than merely survive every season. The odd win every blue moon against the big boys (which I hasten to add shouldn’t really be a surprise because we are after all in the same league)just doesn’t do it for me because in-between there are too many lac lustre performances ! In my opinion ( Stats back this up ) under Bruce we had more success and to be honest the football wasn’t as bad as many make out. The sight of Camara running on to a lofted pass had many of us rising from our seats and there did seem to be a hell of a lot more penalty area action back then ! The wages have since been cut and the purse strings tied in a double knot but had we continued in the same vein financially as we did under Bruce I really don’t think there would have been an implosion !
Don’t expect to finish in the top half then??.. Talk about defeatist!!
I fully expect us to finish in the top half at some point in the near future, and if not I still like to dream, you just seem to want to insult what si happening.

If we invested a lot more money into the club (And risk financial difficulty) then what do you expect to gain, to finish a few places higher?? Would that make you happy?

We are coping well on a well run budget, and with the right work done and put into place I believe we can grow into a better team, we don’t need lump sums of money needlessly splashed out to be competitive.

We have coped and progressed over the years without overspending, and done well by sticking to our budget.. And I fully believe and have hope that we can continue to do so, so why not again? No need to put the Club at risk by spending/wasting big money. B)

        Keep the faith!!
That link mentions nothing of wine and steak or helicopters and holidays, and so shouldn’t be used as a reliable source, I bet whelans got more in coins down the back of his sofa than he’s spent on quality goalscorers in the last few years.

          Don’t talk rubbish.

Whelan is a man of the people. He’s building that club near Wigan Tech for youngsters.

All the Premier League money was spent on ping pong tables, drinks cartons and smoking shelters.
Sorry Standish but Whelan is not building a club near Wigan Tech for youngsters. He has made a donation of pocket change to the project but most of the money is coming from other sources. He is doing what he is best at minimum outlay maximum exposure, sound familiar
Sounds familiar yes and it hasn’t done him no harm at all neither to him or the football club I would go as far as to say that when he pops his clogs a statue should be erected at his stadium

With the gap getting wider between PL and Championship every year just staying up is massive progress in itself.

            Correct.

And if it is to believe that we are almost at the point of breaking even, then with the TV money doubling we’re going to be in a really strong position.
Good point eggmon especially when the Premier League chairmen are working on this which was discussed today I could almost imagine DW has been heading towards this for the past two or three seasons

The who can we realistically sign debate is what put a taint on Jewell’s time at the club for me.

Constantly bemoaning being unable to bring players into the club yet following his departure Hutchings managed to sign Melchiot (very good player for us especially at the time!) Bruce managed to make a couple of good signings (as much as it pains me to say it) and Roberto has been more than competitive in the transfer market.

Perhaps players just didnt want to sign for him and I cant blame em he hasnt exactly set the footballing world alight since his departure.

Yes, there have been some decent signings, but most of them have been misfits (Melchiot was signed from Rennes after his contract had expired), largely unheard of in the UK, or from the SPL and lower leagues.

As much as people don’t want to hear it, low crowds and the threat of relegation each year have put players off joining us in the past.
They have to be misfits as established players won’t want to come.

With regards to your 2nd point.. I completely agree..Whether people want to hear it or not, it is fact.. Low crowds and relegation threats have clearly put people off wanting to come (Aswell as wages of course) :)
We seem to have done well with a few of the old misfits like Bramble ,Zoggy,Cattermole all had problems at other clubs but came here knuckled down and got on with there careers

A whole host of reasons why we wont be progressing to what some call the next level, money being the main bugbear ! Many on here have called Steve Bruce but the stats do tell a story ! Whelan may well have asked RM to cut the wage bill but at what cost ! Skin of teeth scenario year in year out ! We have to realise that Whelan has not got the money to move us on and as we stand financially we will be in the same position until our luck finally runs out !

Jesus the penny has finally dropped for the depressed fillip moss

Admittedly it’s an admirable thing to take all the little shits off the streets, but enough about all the signings from scotland, that youth club will shut within 18 months and Whelan will end up with another town centre development he can sell on at a profit.
Jr has done nothing since leaving, we don’t have the money to get a proven goalscorer, if we did they probably wouldn’t come, since benson went we don’t have the nouse to scout a prospect. That’s the top and bottom of it.

The joys of being a latics fan, oh for a decent cup run, oh never mind.

J.D. my point is we have had the money. The money we have spent on this lot in 6 years???( has anyone the figures?) We could have bought Lionel Messi. On the other hand you’ve got to ask yourself “Are they all Useless” or is it the way we play????
In a previous spat I cant be arsed looking back for we had spent £89 million since enterimg the Prem and recouped £91 million hardly enough to recruit Messi
If those figures are correct. Where has all the Sky and TV money gone??? seeing as on an earlier post, someone said that the wage bill was £27 million.
Are you seriously asking this? This has been done to death almost every year since 2004.

In 2010 the wage-bill was £39 million and the club’s turnover – including Sky TV money was £43 million. Therefore, 90% of money coming into the club went on players’ salaries.

Have a read of this. It explains it in layman’s terms.

                            http://swissramble.blogspot.co.uk/2011/06/wigan-athletics-unlikely-survival.html

I’m sure JPC01 could give you a more thorough explanation, but the gist of it is: we have no money.
You should know Standish that this has to be explained every season to the supporters amongst us who will no doubt say it is in the back pocket of SDW alas the same accusations will be brought out in a few months time
