Alcaraz will sort the middle out

i find it bizarre how many people are saying something similar.
Alcaraz may well be better than Lopez (although I haven’t seen enough of Lopez to comment) but I personally find Alcaraz to be a liability. When he has his head screwed on he’s a good un but at numerous points in games you’ll find him coming out of position to deal with the ball in an area that someone else has covered & it leaves us exposed. His distribution is poor too.
I had the debate on here about Alcaraz at the back end of last season so I aint gonna go over old ground with the example but these aren’t just one offs they happen during every game I see of his. Ahh what the hell I will give some examples
The away game at Sunderland when someone broke down the left & Caldwell was covering. Alcaraz left the bloke he was marking to go to the bloke with the ball who then crossed it to the guy Alcaraz had been marking who then scored. Someone on here argued that wasn’t Alcaraz being poor but him having no confidence in his other defenders & trying to do their jobs for them (coveniently forgetting his own)
Another is what the hell he was doing in the position he was to make the challenge he made on Darren Fletcher at Old Trafford that earnt him a red card
Lets not forget why Steve Caldwell nearly came to blows with him during one game
IMO these sort of recurring mistakes ruin the good work he does do

Anyway, my rather lengthy point was that whilst his return may improve the defence a bit he creates far too many problems himself to be able to “sort the middle out”

That, Tyldesley, is complete and utter boll0x…..whilst indeed the riots in Toxteth took place before the act your ‘blase’ assumtion (for that it is what it is) about the number of kids responsible for the looting might as well be in New York – it is so wide of the mark. We can also look at the previous ‘Broadwater Farm’ riots – was it the kids that hacked off the head of PC Keith Blakelock and subesquent riots in other leafy suburbs like High Wycombe…….and since you wrote this trash, you to have been proven (by no other than our lovely media) to be wrong (proper research mate).

On holiday – abroad – so won’t even be bothered to read any pithy reply.

Hope you’re enjoying your holiday Micky & that you eventually get round to reading my pithy reply!! ;)

I chose to mention the Toxteth riots for a reason. I work in Toxteth about 2 minutes walk from the police station that had its ground floor windows put through last week & I went and had a look at the aftermath of last weeks events the morning after the first night of bother and I spoke to people who live & work in the area to find out what went on & the numbers involved.
I also work with a good number of people who are Toxteth born & bred and who were in their early teens when the 1981 riots took place. To quote one of them (who lived right behind the Rialto building that got burnt down) – “All the kids on our estate waited for our parents to go to sleep and then just went out looting. We got all sorts of stuff and lots of it and stored it in some garages. We made naff all money off it though coz everyone else had also been out on the rob and with us being young and stupid we had no idea what most of what we’d nicked was worth and ended up giving it away for next to nothing”
Another fella I work with said “On Smithdown Road gangs would be walking down the street shouting at residents to get out of the flats above the shops coz they were gonna get looted & torched soon”
Even a cursory glance at some of the historical info on records & on line will provide you with a wealth of similar stories
So no “blase assumptions” at all Micky. I’m a bit of a social history nerd & working in this area I’ve researched loads about it. That was the reason I mentioned Toxteth specifically & not any of the other disturbances around the same period which I haven’t looked into.
So thank you very much but I stand by what I said that there were far more kids looting & rioting in the 1981 riots than there were last week when incidentally there was very little looting at all (if only for the reason that there is next to nothing to loot in Toxteth anyway!!). No blase assumptions whatsoever & it can be backed up with even a cursory glance at the available evidence

Some quotes to illustrate my initial point about people looking at the past through rose tinted specs:

“We live in a decaying age. Young people no longer respect their parents. They are rude and impatient. They frequently inhabit taverns and have no self-control” – Written 6000 years ago on an Egyptian tomb
“What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets, inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?” – Plato (4th century BC)
“The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint” – Peter The Hermit (AD 1274)
I can now add your initial rant to this list of venerable figures!!! ;)
The quote I was actually thinking of i can’t find on line. I think its in the front of a book I have at home so I’ll try to dig it out to add to the list

in reply to: Odemwingie ankle injury? #70057

I can’t West Brom selling him to us and even if they would he wont come cheap. He is a 30 year old wanting 40k a week, not a Whelan signing if you ask me.

I’d have thought the same – so, that being the case, why submit a bid?
We were interested in SWP but in all honesty I could never see us paying his wages. May be it just looks good in the press that we are being linked with someone?????

Maybe. We’ll see. SWP wanted substantially more than £40k per week, though.
I can’t remember which paper it was in (probably the Mirror) but I read last week that Whelan had sanctioned an offer to Wright-Philips of £50k a week. I’d be completely gobsmacked if that was true but that’s what I read – the same article also stated that the club were going to put in a bid for Odemwingie & the 2 days later they did

After being proved wrong by Bobby not once but twice I am trying this season to hold off on any criticisms I may have of him (not sure how long it’ll last!!! ;) )
The only comment I will make of Saturdays game (only saw the extended highlights as I was running the line in a NWCL game) was that it looked like the inability of the team to convert chances that came there way was still there & as Bobby is now saying he needs just 2 signings (& not the 3 he mentioned last week) I am assuming that he is happy with the fella from Strasbourg as his replacement for Boselli so it looks like as we were for strikers & as such the same potential issue of not converting enough chances.
The odd error from players, looking a bit jittery, a bit short of match practice i can accept at this stage of the season & I aint reading much into not beating a team who don’t look much kop (Latics weren’t the only team who didn’t get the result you’d have expected over the weekend).

My worry from the weekend is from Bobby’s post match comments. Now I know I only read a snippet of what he probably said & it doesn’t always come across in print the way it was meant to when spoken but its a bit worrying when the manager makes a statement:
“We are still looking for two players…. I don’t know what players we are going to bring in, that is the reality”
I don’t expect Bobby to state publicly who he is going to bring in or who he is targeting but it does worry me slightly that after saying all summer that our targets were players they had been watching long term & having 3 months to get them, he is now appearing to say he doesn’t know who he is gonna target.
Just thought it was an odd thing to say & was hoping it got lost in translation between the Spanish in his head & the English that came out of his mouth

I enjoy rugby league. I’ve enjoyed playing it at school & uni & I watch it from time to time on the telly.
As I told my wife’s uncle the other month when he said he’d convert me to a “proper sport” whilst I enjoy it & don’t enjoy it enough to spend my hard earned cash to go & watch it on anything like a regular basis (think I’ve been to somet like 6 games in my life as a paying spectator – coincidentally there has been crowd trouble at all bar 1 of them but I digress!!!)

Anyway, in a response to The Egg’s post rugby league/the northern union has been in existence now for nearly 120 years. Everyone knows about it but for whatever reason/s it has little popular appeal outside of a few very small geographical regions. The RFL need to recognise that & concentrate on strengthening the sport within those heartlands as opposed to flogging a dead horse & spending fortunes trying to promote the sport in Wales, the north east, London etc…. The result is that clubs which were the heartbeat of the sport for over a 100 years are cast aside for repeatedly failed attempts to “spread the gospel” & franchises are given to the likes of Gateshead, Crusaders & co ahead of true rugby league clubs like Leigh, Featherstone..

The attempts to push the rugby league “World Cup” on an almost completely disinterested public (plenty of rugby leaguers I know consider it a waste of time & money) are laughable and the RL authorities need to stop trying to be something they’re not

On the local players making it good. I’d love to see more Wiganers making it at Latics but if the RL fans can’t see why that is far less likely in football than in RL then the debate is pointless

in reply to: Repeal the 1989 #69799

If the kids at your school grew up in such an age of respect for authority & their elders then why the hell were the causing such a disturbance within school in the first place? – surely that’s a contradiction in terms!!!!!

Not saying that what’s happening over the last few days is acceptable but there’s always a tendency to look at the past with rose tinted specs.

Take the Toxteth riots. They were before the 1989 Children’s Act & whilst the cause of them was somewhat different to those that took place on Monday & Tuesday night there were far more kids taking part in looting back then than there have been for the last 2 nights

There is a famous quote from some famous bloke about looking back at the past & making judgements but i cannae be bothered trying to find it

in reply to: Tom Cleverley #69750
Has been called into the England squad according to SSN.

They seem to forget he played for us though.

Every article (all 3 of em!!!) I’ve read about Cleverley’s call up has mentioned that he “spent a successful year on loan with Wigan Athletic last season”
I’m not sure how much beyond that you feel they should mention

in reply to: nice season preview from the guardian #69746

I haven’t seen any of the other team’s previews that they’ve done but I’m guessing by the Latics one that its supposed to be a light-hearted, mickey taking review so I’d assume the United one would have comments about “out of towners” etc…

I think from time to time that we do need to be a little less sensitive & learn to tell when its mickey taking & when its digs. This for me looks like the first of these

As Griff says – they are also right about alot of stuff in there

in reply to: message for griff #69690

I can comment coz I wasn’t commenting on yesterday’s game!! ;)
The point was that centre forwards don’t get much more physical in the premier league than Kevin Davies & in a fully competitive game (Bobby might not have taken it seriously but Owen Coyle certainly did judging by his line ups in both games) Piscu didn’t look lightweight at all to me

As we say time will tell as to whether he’s a good un but my first impressions of him are nowt but positive & I hope that if at some stage in the season Alcaraz or Caldwell aren’t available that its Piscu & not Gohouri who is called up & then retains that spot

in reply to: message for griff #69684
Oh, and Piscu was outstanding? Far too lightweight to play centre-back in the Prem, but just goes to show it’s all about opinions.

I didn’t see the game yesterday, but would this be the same lightweight Piscu who kept one of the most physical centre forwards in the top flight (Kevin Davies) more or less in his pocket in the FA Cup last season?
Its only first impressions but I think Bobby has unearthed a good un there

in reply to: It’s just like being in chucrh #69502

To be fair, I never said that you’d get sensitive & emotional I said that you’d find it offensive.
Someone who insults you as you say is being offensive so I’m right. I’ve been offended by many people many times but I don’t always get sensitive & emotional but I can understand some people that do

What I don’t & will never understand are those people who openly admit that they don’t care if what they do or say offends people. I don’t find general swearing offensive – to me they’re just words. However I appreciate that other people do find it offensive so in particular compay I won’t swear coz I don’t wanna offend people
Why some people don’t care if they offend others is beyond me so if someone of pakistani origin is offended by use of that word (and from what i can gather many are) then i won’t use it

If the reasons why the chant of “town full of …” is racist needs explaining then to be frank that says it all

in reply to: It’s just like being in chucrh #69498
Can’t believe you even bothered rising to that, Tyldesley

I know but that “what’s offensive about the word p**i? its only a shortened version of the word pakistan” one always gets a rise out of me

For all I know LostockHallLatics may well be fat, ginger & a b****rd but I bet if someone called him/her a fat, ginger, ba***rd they’d find it offensive – observational or not ;)

in reply to: Tickets still available!! #69497

I can understand the intense dislike for them & I can’t stand em myself like you say just as much (if not more than the likes of Bolton & co)
But there is a fine line between banter between rivals & looking like your more obsessed with them than you are about your own club – it reminds me very much of when i worked in the centre of Manchester in 1997/1998 & the City fans in the office seemed obsessed with anything to do with United whether it was them losing in Europe, not taking a full allocation to Juventus, getting beat by anybody & barely said a word anout their own club (admittedly they were taking regular batterings from the likes of Huddersfield & were fighting relegation to the 3rd division at the time!!! – them were the days!!)

As I said I can’t stand em but so what if they have 150 tickets left for the semi-final on Saturday. If, as many people who write these posts claim, they are so insignificant then just ignore em – it tends to wind em up even more
Besides which, as someone else has pointed out, when it comes to crowds Latics fans are hardly in a position to start taking the pish are we??

in reply to: Tickets still available!! #69488

I agree that threads like this just make Latics fans look small minded & obsessed with em

However, the start of my dislike of Wigan rugby league had absolutely nowt to do with Maurice Lindsay.
I also remember an article in a Tranmere programme in the bit about the away club that carried a quote from a former manager from the 50’s that said about wigan rugby somet along the lines of “we don’t like them & they most certainly don’t like us” which shows that the bitterness between the 2 clubs goes way beyond a comment made by someone on football focus over 24 years ago

in reply to: It’s just like being in chucrh #69487

If someone from Pakistan or of Pakistani dissent finds the word P**i offensive/racist then its offensive/racist.

Its not really down to anyone else to decide whether it is or it isn’t
