I think there’s only JR who is defending this one to the hilt, to be fair. But as we all agree that managers make mistakes like this all the time, why are some so adamant in not letting Bobby forget this one?

Unless they are just looking for an excuse to criticize?

My own personal feelings here are that I would think more of Martinez if he just said “it hasn’t worked out for whatever reasons. time to move on”.
I do accept that its unrealistic to some extent of me to expect that & there are few if any managers about who do that but Bobby’s spin & untruths do grate on me now to the extent where if he told me it was raining I’d go outside to check
I like to think I only comment on Boselli if someone else first posts that “he may come good”, “Bobby says you don’t become a bad player overnight”, “he hasn’t been given a fair crack of the whip” – if I disagree with someone or someone says somet that I don’t think is true then I’ll comment.
Again its chicken & the egg but it is also Bobby who keeps bringing up that he may come good etc… so its only fair to expect people to comment

But that’s not my point. You and Tyldesley, amonst others, do make it sound as though Bobby is the first manager ever to spend a lot of money on someone that didn’t work out. And you’re determined to hang him for it.

As someone else pointed out, I don’t recall SAF coming clean on Veron and publically saying “Well, what a bolok I dropped there, eh?”.

Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good argument Griff. :angry-boxing: ;)
I’ve mentioned several times in this thread that Roberto Martinez isn’t the first manager to sign a dud & he won’t be the last so quite how that is making out that Bobby is the first manager to spend alot of money on a player that didn’t work out is beyond me

Some people are very defensive of Martinez no doubt coz he’s taken a hell of alot of flak over the last couple of years (some justified & some ultimately not) but just as some are quick to jump on his back when he does make mistakes some are just as quick to seemingly deny that the man is capable of making mistakes

Its a bit chicken & the egg but whilst you get people stating that he may still turn out a good un, or he just needs to settle or he hasn’t been given a fair crack of the whip (ironically by the very manager they defend) then you’re gonna get people saying, “nope sorry he signed a dud”. Like I said he won’t be the first manager to do it & he won’t be the last but if some on the darkside need to accept that he can do right, by teh same token some on the darkside need to accept that he gets it wrong too

Sorry pal but it was Whelan who said that not Martinez so it rings tons er fekin bells.

As for taking anything Bobby says with a pinch of salt well no I fekin well won’t. He’s the manager of my beloved football club and yours I presume, he speaks from the heart and other football club managers need to take a leaf out of his book. There’s a little word in the English language called “BELIEVE”, and being a manager most of my life I try to make the people who work for me believe in what I’m trying to make them do. If I achieve that, we all go away happy in what we have achieved as a team. If they don’t believe in what I am telling them then I ask them to move on, it’s best for all parties. I realise you have to involve people in the decision making process, but the final call his with the person who knows best. In football terms at Wigan Athletic I believe that is Bobby.
You and every supporter also have the choice, either believe or bugger orf! :teasing-lurk:

As for the Bosselli saga again, do you think that Genoa and Estudiantes have a wage structure like ours?? I bet their tea ladies are on more than Zog was on. Therefore nearly a season with Genoa and a full one with Estudiantes will probably, as Bobby indicates, will more than cover his wages.
He’s still our asset [in terms of ownership], therefore his signing on fee is not lost yet. Who knows he may have a good season with Estudiantes and either come back and do the business with us making the £6m look a snip, or we sell him back at a profit.
Whatever the outcome I for one won’t slag Bobby off for it or ridicule the player. :angry-soapbox:

I was certain the quote I’d read regarding N’Zogbia needing rest had come from bobby but the only one I can find online is from Whelan & seems to be the quote I remember so I stand corrected

That said, I find the “BELIEVE” part of your post laughable to be honest – & by the way I can read & understand the word believe without it being put in capital letters!!
There’s one thing believing that Bobby or any manager is the right person for the job & he certainly proved myself & plenty of others wrong last season. But blindly believing every word that comes out of his mouth purely because “he says so” is to be frank bizarre & the stuff of sheeplike following.
Even the most dedicated of light siders can acknowledge that Bobby stretches the truth with many of his comments. For instance when talking about Boselli, Gomez, Scotland or others but point out that he is hardly gonna stand there in public & admit to making mistakes to protect his own image & to maintain the morale of the players concerned. Nevertheless even the most dedicated Bobby supporter has to acknowledge that it is bull, for whatever reasons, & to claim it isn’t is just plain wrong. which was my initial point – however badly I illustrated it!

With regards to the loan agreements with Genoa & Estudiantes.
For starters do you really think that Boselli would have uprooted himself & his family from Argentina if he wasn’t getting one hell of a pay rise???? So I doubt very much that their tea lady is on more than N’Zogbia was on.
In fact the salary structure of both clubs is irrelevant to how much money latcis receive if i understand loan deals correctly. If the club who are receiving the player on loan pay less then the club who hold the players registration pay the excess (& I would imagine thi sis the case with estudiantes). If the club who are receiving the player on loan pay more then the player receives it & the club who hold the players registration have just cleared someone’s salary from their books for a set amount of time
The only thing a club receives for loaning a player is a loan fee. I don’t know what these loan fees have been (although they are normally relatively small amounts in comparison to the players alleged worth) but just coz Bobby says they haven’t lost anything doesn’t mean they haven’t. To use an example of other lightsiders he’s hardly going to stand there in a Q&A session & say “Yep its cost us a fortune to bring him here & then ship him out” in order not to protect his own image

If he comes back a great player & does the business for us then Bobby will be hailed as a genius & rightly so. If he comes back & is a dud again or never comes back, whilst not vilifying him (all managers make mistakes) then he deserves some criticism especially in light of the circumstances surrounding his signing

in reply to: I just want to get my boy a latics shirt… #69408

technically as both clubs were in different divisions last season & QPR knew which division they’d be playing in alot earlier than latics, QPR were not in a similar position to Latics ;)

Have you not seen Bobby’s questions and answers session from a few days back … Now whatever anyone thinks of Whelan and is comments etc. Bobby does not give me the impression that he is a bulsh-itter.

I take everything Bobby says publicly with a huge pinch of salt particularly in these Q&A sessions with the fans
Quite alot of what he comes out with in them is bull & contradicts what he’s said previously. he has genuine reasons for doing so which have been pointed out to me previously on here & I can see the point in that but talk bull he definitley does
Away from the Q&A sessions does the recent “N’Zogbia isn’t coming to Austria not coz a deal is being struck but coz he needs the rest” ring any bells??? It was obviously bull as soon as it came out of his mouth & it was proved to be just days later – he had his reasons but it was bull nonetheless

I agree with Standish it that its unrealistic to expect him to say that Boselli isn’t good enough especially when you consider he’s trying to get as much as possible back for him as the club forked out. Although that in turn quite clearly makes out anything he says about him needing to adapt etc.. as bull – I mean what better way is there for someone to adapt to the English game than sending them on loan to Italy & Argentina????

So have Latics not lost any money on Boselli to date?? Alot would depend on how the £6.5mill deal with Estudiantes was structured but i would be amazed if the 2 loan fees from Genoa & Estudiantes match what has been forked out by Latics & will Estudiantes be paying all of Boselli’s increased wages too??

Standish – I’m also positive that the club would not have wanted to release a kit so late in the day.
There are no doubt a few factors that may have contributed such as change in sponsor & Latics being involved in a relegation battle & a new kit to boot but their are other clubs who were in similar situations & yet its only Latics who have wound up in this position

Its a poor show from the club whether they intended it or not

    in reply to: Barton #69381

i think he’s a player who would improve most teams in this division
whether you’d want Barton the person in your squad though is another matter, especially as he seems to spend all his spare time on Twitter telling everybody how good he is, how bad everybody else is & how a club’s owners should run their club

All immaterial as a Latics fan anyroad coz his salary demands & the other clubs who would be in the running for him puts the club out of the race straight away

in reply to: I just want to get my boy a latics shirt… #69380

It was good when vandanel were making the kits coz i got my first daughter a few bits & bobs.
When i went in the club shop in the galleries a couple of months ago all that was there were a few t-shirts & some old vandanel stock

Although I can see the argument that can be used that maybe vandanel went bust coz they produced alot of merchandise that nobody wanted

The adult stuff seems to have improved alot recently though & whilst I didn’t buy any there were a few bits & bobs that looked alreet

The club really should hang its head abit though by only being able to release a new kit for sale a month into the season especially when that kit will be obselete 8 months after you can buy it

in reply to: It’s just like being in chucrh #69379

personally, I’ve never really understood the “its like being in church” chant

As an atheist I don’t get to them much, but on the occasions I have been I’m pretty certain that I can remember a hell of alot of singing going on at various points – with some congregations being louder than others naturally

Having never been to a mosque during a service I can’t comment on whether or not the atmosphere is like Deepdale for a pre-season friendly but those blokes at the top of the turrets make some noise 5 times a day

    in reply to: Boselli #69376

Bobby boobed big time with this signing – he knows it & we know it

However he isn’t the first manager to spend big money on a dud & he won’t be the last, although he isn’t helped in this particular case by the disagreement that ensued with Benson over him. nor does he help himself with the “he still may come good for latics” quotes that he keeps comign out with – like I said it hasn’t worked out, chalk it down to experience & move on

Just one other point though, it is actually wrong of Bobby to say “he’s scored goals wherever he’s been & you don’t become a bad player overnight” – his career stats show that he hasn’t really scored goals wherever he’s been (not many of them anyway). somet like 5 goals in 35 games in the Spanish 2nd division one season & a similar return (if not less) at Boca Juniors. He had a half decent return for Estudiantes one season (10 in 25ish) & a really good season before Latics swooped.
As is often said on here – don’t let the facts get in the way of a good argument!!!! ;)

    in reply to: concerned #69159
anyone else concerned with lack of team strengthening
with zogbia leaving and bob saying moses is his replacement
and this morning one papper even saying mcarthy extension contract talks have broke down
    very worrying times ahead

Not worried in the slightest. If it gets to August 31st in the same position then yes I would be but its July29th & the season doesn’t start for another 2 weeks so no.
I’ve got used to Latics over the years starting the season with an incomplete squad or signing players in the last bit of run up to the start of the season & then transfer deadline day
With regards to McCarthy i dunno how true it is & as with most rumours I’ll worry about em if &/or when they happend

in reply to: New Kit #69117

Its alright as football shirts go I guess although i do prefer Latics to be in stripes

In actual fact it reminds me pretty much of the kit that Latics wore when I started to watch em full-time in 1989 (although that didn’t have the white bits down the side)

Just one other thing though – released on September 7th?????? That’s pretty incompetent timing even by Latics admin standards

These are the prices that Bolton fans are having to pay (i presume us and them would come in the same match category) for their game on the opening day.

    Central: £57
    Off Centre: £52
    Corners: £47

    Those arent typos.

    Good feckin God!!!!!!!! :scared-shocked: :scared-shocked: :scared-shocked:

    Lostock
In every way imaginable Aston Villa is a massive step up from Wigan Athletic

That said I do think that he is capable of playing for a better team but as Griff says if the indications to his agent were that only Villa were prepared to pay anything approcahing the £10mill the club wanted & the wages he wanted (& you can bet his agent has been on the phone to virtually every top flight club in Europe) then he really doesn’t have a great deal of choice
