From latics he went on to Colchester & he may even have been involved with Ipswich after that but it might just be my mind paying tricks on me
As for stabilising us – dunno about that. he saved us from the horror of Bill Kenyon but things continued to be pretty dire. One story I heard either Kenny Swain or Brenda Spencer tell the media was that in the summer of 1994 the club could not even afford to buy paper for the fax machine. I wouldn’t call that stability
On the flip side he made exactly the right appointment in Graham Barrow as that saved us from relegation from the football league. he wasn’t the manager to take us forward but he was needed at that pointThat clip of him on SSN gerrin giddy when United scored against Liverpool, tickled me today. It took him at least 3 attempts to work out where the badge was on his shirt. One of the most over rated players ever to play for Man U and England in my mind. The first of the prem prima donas who looked down on fans as though they were a piece shyte on his boots.
Are you having a laugh????? Its all personal opinions but if there’s been a better right back of any nationality who has played in England over the last 15 years or so then I haven’t seen em.
As good defending as he was going forward which seems to be a rarity for full backs these days
As for being the first of the prem prima donnas who looked down on fans as though they were a piece of poo on his shoe – that isn’t a case of personal opinion that I’m afraid is absolute rubbish
He was first & foremost a Man United fan & its a rarity that supporters could see someone playing for their club who was as passionate about the club as them. Just ask a die hard United fan (the ones who actually go to games) whether they think Gary Neville looks down on em & they’ll set you straight. Its probably his passion for United above all else which yanked off non-united fans about himAs for what he was like away from the game I have no idea (although I did once literally bump into him in St Anne’s Square in Manchester & he had a face on him like a bulldog licking pish off a thistle) but he’d hardly be the first person to tell a workman they were paying them to work not talk – even more so when you consider how quickly owt he’d have said would have been splashed round the internet as soon as the workie got hom
He may well go on to be a great signing in 1, 2, 3 or 4 years time
Yes, as he says, one for the future. Bobby wasn’t referring to Sammon when he said we had a stronger squad. That was is, admittedly bizarre, statement that the three players returning from injury were making us a stronger squad.
You know full well that the “people who criticise” comment wasn’t aimed specifically at you. But you do use it to suit your argument some times ;)
Apology accepted Griff ;)
For what its worth I do think that his comment was intended to include Sammon as well as the 3 returning players as it was made after deadline day (as well as being made before it)
And I’m sure had he said that you or someone else would have been laying into him for making ” positive ” statements about a player who cost £500k from the SPL. Maybe he read your response to his comments when we signed Jordi Gomez & thought ” better not promise too much with this lad because if he doesnt deliver tyldesley latic will be on my case again ”Youve taken great pleasure in seeking out comments made about previous signings when hes bigged them up in the past, now youre slagging him off for playing down new signings so he clearly cant do any right in your book
Of course he’s made a mistake with Boselli,he’s also done something about it by farming him out on loan to Genoa. Who knows we may even get some of that 6 mill back if he stays there, unlike the 5 mill centre forward Steve Bruce bought a year or so earlier who had his contract terminated. There are examples of flops all over & Im sure if you were a Bolton fan you would have binned off there top scorer Elmander by now as he hadnt done anything for two seasons & they paid £10m for him.
I’ve not seen this lad play either but he will get my backing this season and next whatever division we are in because unlike some of our fans I want to support the club & its players & management over the longer term, not just the next 12 games.Sorry if that doesnt fit your model of going round throwing hissy fits because we are in the relegation zone & sorry to break it to you but we were never going to last in this league forever,& even Whelan has his financial limitations. But as someone else on here said the other day, some of us care more about the football club than the premiership
My reason for picking on the quotes made about the signing of Gomez & Scotland weren’t so much that he bigged them up & they were/are (depsite what griff says ;) ) flops. When he made those comments in the fanzine interviews I made the point that not only did he seem to be saying he had faith in using alot of the players discarded by Bruce, Jewell & Hutchings as being good enough (why when they hadn’t been for up to 3 other managers?) but also the same point about easing players in. Just to show the the same applied then as it does now (IMO). Not for slating him for signing players who aren’t good enough.
Possibly & maybe he does feel Sammon will be able to adapt straight away but i can only go off what he saysCan Bobby do right in my book? Yes – when he’s done well or made a good signing I’ve said so. When he makes mistakes (game after game after game) I’ve said so
As for Boselli – our manager doesn’t think he’s made a mistake or else he won’t admit it in public. he still claims publicly that someone who quite clearly hasn’t go the attributes to play up front on his own is going to develop those attributes playing in Italy as part of a front 2 pairing
I should also point out that I never said managers don’t buy flops or criticised Martinez for signing players who’ve flopped. Every signing every manager makes is a gamble no matter how much or little you’ve paid for them. Oh & Elmander was a flop – it took a different manager playing a different style of play to show how good he could be. If Megson had still been in charge playing his system then he’d have been binned off by now. Likewise I think Boselli could be a great player for Latics if he was played in a formation that suited his talents but he isn’tSammon will also get my backing, as will the club for as long as either he is here or (in terms of supporting the club) I am here. That doesn’t stop me being entitled to voice my opinion when I think players aren’t good enough or when managers make mistakes (time after time after time). Sorry if that doesn’t fit into your sheep like mentality of defending the indefendable or accepting someone who quite clearly isn’t up to the job purely coz he’s the manager & must be supported. Some of us care more about the football club than that
bob will say he needs time to settle first
be ok in championshipBicky – you took the words right out of my mouth with that comment
Don’t people know that Bobby doesn’t sign players who are “ready” – he signs players who need time to “adapt” & who can be eased in. Expect Sammon to be given 10 or 15 minute cameo sub appearances for the next 12 months or more a la Victor Moses.
Or if he is thrown straight in & is a complete flop Bobby will use the excuse that he never intended to throw him in at the deep end but intended to ease him in & that’s why they don’t look up to the job but they will do in another 12 months a la Scotland, Gomez etc…
Bit of a generalisation that Tyldesley if you don’t mind me saying.Boselli, Di Santo, Gary Caldwell, Gahouri, Alcaraz, Diame, Thomas, Stam all played in the next game immediately after signing.
However, McCarthy, McCarthur, and Moses have all had to adapt in the reserves/on the bench – which, when you look the three players listed, begs the questions: does it work – especially with young players, and is Martinez right to do so when a lot of those thrown straight in are regarded as flops?
Personally I think it’s a good policy – picking up good young players on the cheap, however, it’s building for the future, which isn’t exactly great when you’re trying to avoid relegation.
And to end…picking up from any earlier thread:
‘And believe it or not it is possible to get players who are capable of stepping straight into a premier league side at our level without needing upwards of 12 months to adapt without breaking the bank.’
Who? Names names of Premier League players who aren’t being sold at inflated prices or who are on crippling salaries that would come to Wigan.
1) I never said Bobby hasn’t signed any players who were capable of hitting the ground running. I’m more than aware that he has – my argument is that Latics (in this division) are always likely to be struggling. If we want to succeed in that battle year on year the squad needs to have players who can hit the ground running. IMO its only the bigger clubs who can afford to ease players in
2) Does it work easing them in? I’m not sure. For a start I don’t think McCarthy was eased in. He spent the entire pre-season injured & had trouble getting his fitness levels up. When he was fit Bobby played him in the cup game against Hull & he’s been an automatic starter ever since. I have no idea what he’s playing at with Moses – he’s been here a year now & he still doesn’t seem to think he’s ready for anything other than 15 minute sub appearances. £2.5mill of our scant resources for an impact sub?? I would say 12 months should be more than enough for him to have adpated but apparently not. McArthur seems to have taken to life at this level no problem but he seems to rank him behind Thomas, Diame & Watson. All 3 of those players have their limitations & faults but he won’t take a risk on McArthur
3) I agree a club needs to have a long term plan & a short term one but as Bobby said the other day, its vital to the future plans of Wigan Athletic that we stay in the premier league and I don’t think some of his short term decisions are making that an option
4) What players are out there who could hit the ground running without being bought at inflated prices & crippling salaries. I don’t know – I don’t have an array of scouts or agents at my disposal. Please note however that I didn’t say they had to be established premier league players I simply said our signings (in this window) needed to be players who could hit the ground runningPersonally I think it’s a good policy – picking up good young players on the cheap, however, it’s building for the future, which isn’t exactly great when you’re trying to avoid relegation.

The people who criticise our signing of these young players simply don’t accept the financial reality of being Wigan Athletic. You’re wasting your time, SW.
Absolute cr@p Griff
I am more than aware of the financial reality of being Wigan Athletic
At no point have I said in this thread or anywhere else that Latics should have gone out & bought players at inflated prices & with crippling salaries. What I have done is criticise signing someone in the midst of a relegation battle & with barely 3 months of the season left who the very man who signs him says that it is highly unlikely is going to make much impact this season
He may well go on to be a great signing in 1, 2, 3 or 4 years time but right here & right now by our own manager’s admission it seems he will do little to help our current predicament & in light of that just how (as our manager claims) has he made the squad stronger during the transfer window????
I hope Bobby is wrong & that he comes off the bench on Saturday, scores the winner & takes to the premier league like a duck to waterTalking of wastign breath, I’m getting people criticise my viewpoint coz I don’t understand the financial reality of being Wigan Athletic, because I don’t care about the future of the club beyond the next 12 games (which frankly as someone who’s been following the club for the last quarter of a century is feckin insulting) & thinking that we should risk the club’s future for short term gain.
Despite that not one of the replies to my thread has answered satisfactorily (or even attempted to) how the signing of a player who by the managers admission is not yet ready either a) helps Latics current season and/or b) makes Latics have a stronger squad than it did on dec 31st.
And you aint coz the simple fact is that it doesn’tWell thats rubbish isnt it,we should have signed Darren Bent or Robbie Keane & forked out 60-80k a week in wages or whatever only for them to bugger off in a year when they get a better offer,I’m sure noone will mind when Whelan puts season tickets up to 750 a year to compensate
What did you expect him to say ” I’m starting him on Saturday & if hasn’t got two by half time & bagged 10 by the end of the season then he’s a flop & a complete waste of five hundred grand ”Welcome to the new world Tyldesley, where football only spend what they can afford but at least there might be a football club in a years time
Why is it that whenever someone makes a comment regarding disappointment in a signing (& I aint criticising him without seeing him play but more the point that in the midst of a relegation battle we’ve signed someone who is going to take a good while to settle in – thus rendering them pretty much useless for the battle ahead?) somebody jumps down their throat with the same old tired “yes he should have bankrupted the club by spending millions on a signing & millions more on his wages.
At no point did I state that & in another post on another thread have stated that I understand the restrictions on our transfer policy.
That said I’ve argued virtually since Bobby took charge that it is of no use to Latics as a premier league club to sign players who need significant time to adapt to quality of this division. Latics need players that can hit the ground running coz if we sign players who need time to adapt, by the time they’ve adapted the club will be pretty much relegated (as it is at present looking at the fixtures we have ahead)
At present we have players like McArthur, Moses (12 months after signing), McManaman, Sammon, Lopez/Piscu all occupying vital squad positions but who our manager doesn’t feel are ready to be regular starters because they haven’t yet adapted. Prior to that Bobby used the excuse that his plan on starting the job was to run with the remnants of Bruce’s squad (using players that several managers had not seen fit to play) whilst easing in the likes of Scotland & Gomez. They might as well not be here to be honest
And believe it or not it is possible to get players who are capable of stepping straight into a premier league side at our level without needing upwards of 12 months to adapt without breaking the bank.
Bobby talks of a squad that is stronger now than it was at the start of the transfer window despite shipping out a player who cost him £6mill (and who he also now says needs time to adapt to England by playing in Italy!!! £6mill for someone who wasn’t yet ready to play English football – marvellous. Isn’t that was his scouts should be telling him. or rather they did & he ignored em!!) with someone who cost £450k & who isn’t really ready to play for us either. On what planet is that a stronger squad?????What did i want him to say or rather what did I want him to be able to say about any new signing he made “he’s a quality player who will be able to handle the step up in class. we’ve got ourselves a bargain” as opposed to “our new signing will be a good un, just don’t expect to see that much of him during our relegation battle coz he isn’t ready”
If that really is the case then he should have kept his hands in his pockets rather than signing someone who seems to believe will have little impact on our relegation fightWelcome Scholes to the strange, bizarre, warped, twisted view of reality that exists in Martinez’s brain where decisions aren’t made for the benefit of the team here & now but what they might reap for you a couple of years (and a relegation) down the line
And as if by magic Bobby says on wigantoday.net:
““Conor is a really exciting prospect ….. We need to be patient with him, because the gap between the SPL and the Premier League is huge.
We’ll allow him all the time he needs to settle in, though, and hopefully he’ll fulfil his huge potential here at Wigan.”
i think you hit teh nail on the head there Edinburgh – They have the ability to shock every now & again & it quite literally is every now & again. Sporadically – its never sustained.
After beating Chelsea, Arsenal & Liverpool last season the following games saw us lose to Hull, West Ham & Bolton respectively.
Likewise when they beat Spurs this season we followed it up with a draw & a loss in our next 2 games.
If we do spring a surprise against say City or Chelsea in that run we’ve got coming up we’ll in all likelihood chuck that advantage away in our games against Brum & BlackpoolI stand to be corrected but there’s no way that Bobby’s team is capable of going on the sort of sustained run needed to avoid getting relegated. They’ve not shown any capability of being able to do that since August 2009
He more or less is has a starting place week in week out yet never ever troubles or looks like troubling the opposition defence. ………
he had numerous chances yesterday to put the game beyond Albion yet he managed to hit the M6 instead.Make your mind up.
He either “never ever troubles” the opposition OR he gets numerous chances & misses them.
he can’t do both!!I’d agree with the winger stuff though. Never in a million years is he or will he ever be a left winger. he is however (& without seeing Connor Sammon play – although there is a youtube clip of him missing a header against Aberdeen from 2 yards out & unmarked!!) the best striker we’ve got
The way i look at our predicament is that we have 23 points at present & probably will need 38 to be absolutely sure of staying up – though the probable figure will be a bit lower (didn’t 36 keep us up last season?)
That means we need 15 points or 5 wins from 13 games.
Now given the fact that Latics have only won 4 in 25 so far this season (1 win roughly every 6 games) & our more recent record is 1 win in our last 12 games, to expect us to go on now & win 5 in our next 13 games is completely & utterly unrealistic when nothing in the previous 25 games has given us any indication of the team being able to sustain that sort of run.
One faint glimmer of hope is that our current points per game record so far this season is 0.96 points a game which would give us just under 12 points from our remaining games so its probably gonna have to be fingers crossed that 3 other teams slump even worse than us & 35-34 points might just do itOn the down side as well though you also have to look at the teams around us in the relegation mire who signed the likes of Robbie Keane & David Bentley and we signed some bloke for under half a mill from Kilmarnock & there’s not even any straws for us to clutch at to say our new signing could kick start a revival (not that I’m saying latics could or should have broke the bank to make a big signing).
Nor do I buy into the “having Moses, Cleverley & Di Santo back is like 3 new signings” bumpf either coz all 3 have at some point contributed to the poor current record anyway & he doesn’t play one of em even when fitAs I pointed out yesterday Edinburgh in another thread whilst I acknowledge that teams such as WBA adapt their tactics to “have more of a go” at us, I think Ronnie Stam has gievn us an insight into the fact that it is also a deliberate tactic of Latics to sit back once in front & invite teams on to us in the attempt to exploit the space behind them.
That’s all very well & good if you have defenders & midfielders with the ability to withstand that pressure but Latics don’t & Bobby should realise that but he just keeps sticking his hand into the fire no matter how much it burns.
Latics have shown in the first half on Tuesday & in many other games what their strengths are & they should play to thosebob will say he needs time to settle first
be ok in championshipBicky – you took the words right out of my mouth with that comment
Don’t people know that Bobby doesn’t sign players who are “ready” – he signs players who need time to “adapt” & who can be eased in. Expect Sammon to be given 10 or 15 minute cameo sub appearances for the next 12 months or more a la Victor Moses.
Or if he is thrown straight in & is a complete flop Bobby will use the excuse that he never intended to throw him in at the deep end but intended to ease him in & that’s why they don’t look up to the job but they will do in another 12 months a la Scotland, Gomez etc…I’d agree that I’d rather have Alcaraz in the centre of defence ahead of any of our other centre halves with the exception of Boyce – although bearing in mind the competition he’s up against its like asking which terminal disease I’d prefer to die from!!!
I haven’t seen anything of Piscu at all to comment on whether I think he should start but based on Bobby’s other signings in that position I aint particularly confident.
I also think that the way Bobby has the back four playing doesn’t help – lets not forget that he turned Bruce’s excellent back 4 into a quivering mess within 3 months of starting in the job. Let them defend properly & then start worrying about zonal marking or passing their way out of trouble
i don’t think there can be any doubt that Al Habsi is the reason we haven’t taken any major kickings this season – start of the season kirkland is in nets & we concede 10 in 2 games. Since then Al Habsi has come in & as you mention we’ve taken some batterings in terms of possession & chances but no team has put more than 3 past him
If Alcaraz is fight then I’d imagine he will start him in the middle & we will have a right footed centre half playing at left back coz a) Bobby saw fit to only have 1 experienced left back in the squad &/or b) if he won’t take a risk on Mustoe playing in either FA Cup game he aint gonna chuck him in to a crucial premier league game &/or c) Bobby likes putting square pegs in round holes
From what I’ve seen of him I have my doubts as to whether Alcaraz is good enough for this level as he seems to forever get sucked out of position (remember S Caldwell’s scrap with him against Bolton at home & where exactly he was on the pitch when he committed the foul on Fletcher that got him sent off against Man U) & his distribution is awful
Gohouri tends to get himself in the right positions & is prepared to stick his head in where it might get hurt but his distribution is even worse than Alcaraz
The 2 Caldwell’s are just too slow at this level
So I don’t particularly have any confidence in any of the central defenders Bobby has signed in being up to the job. I’d say put Boyce in there but then that would mean putting Stam on at right back & I don’t think he’s much kop eitherHow bad the defence became so quickly in the 18 months or so Bobby has been in charge is a disgrace although the 62 goals the team are on scheduel to conceded this season is a bit of a step up from the 79 they conceded last year although I think in part alot of that is to do with the only quality defensive signing Bobby has made – Al Habsi
