Remember my lad aged 8 when he was the mascot about 14 years ago and he was kicking in with Warney and Roy Carroll and smashed one into the top corner past Carroll when the fans were coming in.
Top quality strike!

Steve Bruce with Eric Black as his assistant would be my choice if Martinez is stupid enough to take a job like Liverpool or Villa where he will get no time to turn things round.
I think he will stay though and see what this new team that he just fathomed how work will shape up in the new season.

I can’t tell you how embarrassed I was when 1 Wolves chubby ran 500 Wiganers. Then about 50 chose to stay and boot him all over.

If ever there was a reason to stop pitch invasions, this was it.

We have just become the laughing stock of supporters up and down the country.

Chav, youth, fannees.

I blame the Wolves idiot diving into 300 children?/fans to prove he is hard/thick delete as appropiate.
The ones who ran off were clearly little kids but no doubt this pleb will dine out on the fact he ‘ran’ Wigan on his own and write a book about it :silly:

Survival every time due to the high profile it gives to the club and town.

Not being funny but this rough diamond policy as been going on for 34 years

It has for sure but we slipped out of this under chris Hutchins/ Steve Bruce and started buying so called ‘finished articles’ like Bent,King, Kapo,Lenzaat,De Ridder,Kirkland. All on huge money and although the current policy didnt wash with most supporters at first who can argue with it now?
We also had spells in the lower divisions were we bought expensive players who didnt deliver when they arrived (Ashcroft, Redfearn ,Howarth spring to mind).

Phillips and Ince(both are bloody awesome players!) of Blackpool look very good shouts for me rather than Johnson.I cant stand the swine as he always scores against us-good player but i prefer the current ‘rough diamond’ policy that the club has adopted in recent times and who can say this hasnt paid off?Who as a supporter hasnt been chuffed to see Mcarthur Maloney,Moses,Mccarthy come good this year and for combined fees of under £5 million-hell knows what they are all worth combined now?
Younger players are hungrier than ageing ones like Johnson and i think their are rich pickings in the lower divisions if the scouting network is good enough.

I think Bolton will beat Stoke -Coyle strikes me as a lucky manager but they need to get out of the traps early. Can see some early goals for Bolton but may be a bit edgy before City finish QPR off in the second half.
Its going to be a fantastic TV sunday and im almost tempted to stay home to watch it all unfold ( only joking  ).

I think Stoke will have a relegation fight next year as everybody has found them out.
Hope its QPR down though-cant stand them!

Out of interest, where do people see us finishing next season?

Top 8 and a cup run will do. :)

Fair point but even so he is still learning his trade as a manager and coach and the majority of this season (23 games)has been appalling and questions need asking as to why they started so poorly given that most of the current squad were at the club back in august last year.
I agree totally how great it is to survive and i am very proud but he is no way ready to take a big job.
Next season(if he stays) could be the making of him though and im sure we will all expect much more from him and the team.

Don’t get me wrong Vince , I totally agree with you he is still learning the trade – he has afterall still had just three years as a top level manager. I would hate to see him go now to a massive club where they will demand instant success and he could well end up just
another managerial casualty.
I’ve said before we could be on the verge of something special here and I’m sure he will want to see just what we can achieve. I honestly believe he’ll be here for at least another year regardless of who comes knocking.
I hope he stays but the entire backroom staff need to sit down and get the bit between the teeth earlier in the season and not prance round like they have won the champions league because they stayed up.They have avoided relegation AGAIN and it is hardly celebratory stuff when you look at it in the cold light of day.I think the bad start was caused by too much dwelling on the heroics of West ham and Stoke and that casual celebratory atmosphere carried on well into this season hence the dreadful start.
Caldwell really impressed me on sky on monday when he played down the survival with a face that suggested rank disappointment rather than celebration.
It is now time to stop treading water and move the club forward which surely Dave Whelan can see the result of the winning team of recent weeks is a full house of home supporters this sunday. It wont take much money other than securing the staff at the club and giving him a realistic budget for prudent transfer dealing that Martinez seems to be very good at.
This surely would be much rather than daft spending on mediocre players past their sell by date that we have seen in the past.
If they start next season as they finished this one then surely we are looking at bigger crowds and cup runs and a more enjoyable season than the one we have just had.
The bar has been raised in recent weeks so i reckon he should stay for one more year at least to see what happens.

He is another who has a lot of learning to do and he wont do that in a reserve team.He doesnt score enough and needs to realise he should pass the ball occasionally he will only learn that from regular games which he will get here.He has performed well in the televised games and seems to switch it on for the big occasion but his overall season has been ordinary given his potential.
That said if Blackpool stay down they do a lot worse than go for young Matt Phillips or tom Ince both fantastic players.
Phillips is related to Boycie i think and looked very very good last night at Birmingham.

Not sure a mini season of 8 games is going to land him a top job though.

I hate to be pedantic but since February we have lost 3 games out of 14. If we get a result on Sunday that will make it 15. That makes it just under 40% of the season which in my mind makes it a chunk of a season rather than a mini season.
Probably the most improved player this season and has lead the team superbly through its hardest ever season for many many years.
I also liked his modesty on monday when he talked down the survival escape and said it wasnt good enough.

Im the same view what if he blazes away with 6 wins out of eight at the start of next year?
The guy is still learning and he has a chairman who has given him time to do this.
Walk away now and he may never know what he could have really acheived with his current crop of players.
