Absolute streaming hound mound. Each time we rested players for the embarrassments that were Notts co, , Blackpool, Swindon, ,Bradford etc we have then gone on to lose the next league game too, so rotating our rice paper squad is working a treat. Quality wise this 3sorry 4 now season plan has us with no better than we had when he arrived and me for one is cocked off with results like yesterday (which isn’t a one off) becoming acceptable. It would be a respite to have a little trot in a cup but we only need to rest 2 players and we are goosed.

If those stats are correct then this is a very good post ! :)
2012
30 Oct: Wigan 0 Bradford 0 (Bradford win on penalties)
03 Nov: Tottenham 0 Wigan 1

Oops, no, it’s wrong.
A very rare highlight in what is turning out to be a bad season ! ;)
He’s also forgotten to mention that nobody seemed to mind the resting of players when we trounced West Ham and Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup this season.

I really hope some of these people have unbreakable furniture and have all sharp objects removed from their houses when they get home after a game.

Samaritans must shite themselves whenever they see the results and Saturdays and we’ve lost.
I never get angry, I prefer the sarcastic approach. Not many can deny that the season so far has been a let down ! ;)
don’t sit on the fence; if we’re brutally honest don’t think there is one person who can justifiably say it hasn’t been a let down (points-wise) to date, particularly on the back of a great last 3 months last campaign.

here’s hoping for better …

in reply to: Youth development #99333
Bear with me on this, it’s not an anti Martinez rant nor a passionate defence as we read on this site. His quote after the game basically says he is not interested in winning games in the short term, we have invested a lot in the youth development facilities so they need to play them in the cups.

So this effectively says the cups will be used for player development not to try and win them?

Should this be the policy of any premier league team, surely football is all about competing to win?

Now if this policy was to develop players for the long term goal of having a self built team in the future ready to challenge to win honours then great, however the clubs always stated we have a policy of developing players for them to move onto the next stage.

Is that what we want our club to be, almost a development facility rather than a competitive football team or do we have no choice in the money world today?

Is this the only way for us to survive in the premier league, is this what we want from football?

he also said it takes a long time for 9 ‘new’ players to gel (so why not make max 6 changes and go to 8/9 during the game (won) …)

etc. etc.

I will go for a Bournemouth away win there !

probably as well if Bournemouth do get there …

not beyond the realms of possibility, if we were to win at Bournemouth …
(telford, canvey island, MAC …)

Disagree about Henriquez. I watched him closely when he came on and was impressed by his movement off the ball. He got into loads of good positions but if nobody passes the ball to you then you can’t do anything with it. If the comment about not being able to trap the ball is based on the incident in front of the west stand, the ball had taken a wicked deflection and was spinning all over the place.

it was. mind you, re. the game on the box tonite Mr RVP (worst luck) didn’t do too badly did he, taking a 50 yard ball with his left, without breaking stride, before despatching with his right.

that’s why Manure are £27M outta pocket, no doubt.

wish henriquez all the best, just a pity it isn’t ‘little pea'(back in the Utd. fold)

if my memory serves me well, manure paid ~£8M for ‘little pea’, we paid £6m for Bosselli. NIGHT and DAY

in reply to: FA Cup memories.. #99219
Some of my memories include & has as already been posted on here in other posts – the bournemouth 3 – 0 game played in atrocious conditions. I remember kelly’s 30 yard screamer & im pretty sure (though might be completely wrong) playing with a white ball. The trip to southampton which remains the furthest away trip for myself. The game at northwich where a copper had a dart in his face. 1994 (i think) against leek town – only time ive been sh1t scared watching a game of football. & 1980 V. Everton when i was cheesed off with my dad for not taking me to goodison, though he did give me a programme from a 1st division side, which to an 8 year old at the time was historical.

was there …just missed me, thank god

I agree (sorry Griff).

I have no problems with the team RM named. They are “Premier League squad players”. They should be out to impress and convince him they are ready to contend for PL places. It is not his fault that they did not.

I have defended Boselli in the past, saying he is a poacher, and isn’t given a chance. Against Bradford and today he proved he is no more than a benchwarmer (and yes be honest a waste of a bench place). If the service isn’t coming to him then he needs to make things happen.

Stam disappointed. He can on occasion take on PL defenders. He didn’t seem willing or able to do that today against Division 1 opponents.

I thought Redmond played well in the first half, and McManaman was nowehere near as good in the second half when pushed out wide.

I had hoped that Henriquez would add sparkle. OK – maybe a few mistimed touches didn’t go as he would have wished – but I fear he’s not going to change the world.

Noticeable that the better players today – Boyce, Figueroa, Gomez (yes, I though the played well) – are the ones who have appeared at league level. The others failed to impress when they had the stage to themselves.

I think we’ll win the replay – but we should not have needed to go to a replay.

unfortunately, think not (agree with Griff  )

Henriquez – all too apparent why he’s not banging on the first team door (Welbeck /Hernandez are …), if we’re pinning our hopes on him whilst Kone’s at the ANC (here’s hoping he doesn’t do an Alcaraz – ouch my groin#) then we’re in for some fun (not).

# happened to bump into wife of our captain marvellous over Xmas break.

when asked what Alcaraz was up to, her curt response was ‘ I’m only interested in what Gary’s doing ..’ (read into that what you will …)

in reply to: Divided ! #99198

It would appear that RM has caused a bit of a split between fans again. His lack of interest in cup competitions has riled some on here and the natives are restless ! His best squad in 4 years comment was made to look a little silly today in my opinion !

Phil, as much as I like you, yes he has split the fans into two, but it’s not like this is a new thing.

There are those that no what’s going on and accept it, whether they like it or not, and contiunue to support the club (me and the other clever lads)

And then there are those who know what’s going on and can’t be arsed to support the club but can be arsed to log on a Saturday night to moan (you, Melt-down Dave and the others)

I notice on an earlier thread that you questioned who would be going to the replay. Bit rich from someone who couldn’t be arsed to go to the first game and someone barely sees out the full 90 minutes of a home game when you can be arsed to turn up.
Bit unfair that comment Griff.. I, like others have mentioned stayed away today cos i suspected this would happen. Would have been pretty miffed had i av gone today. No brainer for me as football is supposed to be an entertainment thing that excites you, not an endurance test!

Got to listen to second half on radio and the one thing that stood out was the lack of chances we created. Even against a lower league club we still can’t create chances…
steady on jimmyc …. we had our 1st shot on goal today after a mere 40 mins.

in reply to: Shocking That….But Best Get Used To It. #99193
Absolutely diabolical, that today.

Too many changes….Martinez has shot himself in the foot. Moans about our players being tired from playing too many games…..

…well now we’ve another game to play, a midweek replay at Dean Court. What an absolute masterstroke!

Instead of playing a strong team and winning 2 or 3 nil, he played a weak side that was absolutely dire, struggled, and at times made a League One side look like Brazil. Granted, they are a decent League One side on a great run of form.

ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON. MARTINEZ HAS GOT WHAT HE DESERVES (WHAT HE LEAST WANTED) – A REPLAY ! CONGRATULATIONS.

ALL FOR GIVING YOUNG UNS A CHANCE, BUT 9 CHANGES AGAIN (HAVE WE NOT LEARNED AFTER BCFC UPSET (BOURNEMOUTH A BETTER TEAM))

5 /6 CHANGES OK, GET AN EARLY GOAL OR TWO AND THEN SUB 1/2/3

No doubt, when we perform abysmally in the league game after the cup replay, he will use the ‘too many games….jaded’ excuse…..

oh, piss off Roberto! Stop taking the piss out of us fans. Here’s some observations from today:

AGREED. ROTATION POLICY (MAGNITUDE OF) DISRESPECTFUL TO THE PAYING WIGAN PUBLIC… 5.500 HARDY SOULS TURNED UP (POST BCFC).. EXPECTED MUCH BETTER

1. Boselli is shite. Get Rid. GIVE him away.

ABSOLUTELY – WOULD PAY HIM OFF /GET SHUT OF NOW – HE’S NOT INTERESTED
WHO ON EARTH WAS OUR SCOUT DOWN IN ARGENTINA ???

2. McManaman is not good enough. Nor is Redmond.

McMAN DID OK 1ST HALF

3. What exactly do they see in Fyvie? I don’t see anything.

NOT A LOT

4. Once we are relegated and the likes of Ramis, McCarthy and Kone leave, we will have that type of side out every week….and will really struggle.

5. We are far too slow in our build up and do far too many cross field
balls……it’s so boring and pedestrian. I liked how Bouremouth passed it, yet also looked at getting in behind the defence. We don’t do that.

6. Our squad is NO WAY our best squad in his time here. The squad he got
when he arrived, including Bramble, Scharner and Cattermole was better.

7. For once today, as the ‘big club’, we got a lot of 50-50 decisions.

THE REF GOT US A REPLAY
2 KEY PENALTY AREA DECISIONS
WITHOUT GOMEZ PENALTY, NEVER GOING TO SCORE IN A MONTH OF SUNDAYS

8. Why on earth do we look like the away team, as teams come at us and we sit back? It puzzles me. We ENCOURAGE teams to attack us! Did you not see how far their line was pushing up?

AGAIN, WE DROP OFF IN THE BUILD UP TO 1ST GOAL, NO-ONE CHARGING DOWN
THE B’MTH GOALSCORER

9. I think Eddie Howe has a decent side there.

AGREED – ON THE PITCH AT THE END WITH PLAYERS ACKNOWLEDGING
THE TRAVELLING SUPPORTERS

No doubt Martinez will put some ‘spin’ on this, yet from the comments I heard whilst leaving the stadium, I think he has lost the majority of the support.

It was terrible, and I don’t think anybody who went can argue otherwise.

WASN’T TERRBILE, BUT A BLOODY DISGRACE … LETHARGIC, LACKING IN
DESIRE, WILL TO WIN ETC.

ADDENDUM: I thought their players effort was superb and their support was also magnificent. About 3000? Made me think of the days when WE used to have decent away support and went away with a ‘buzz’ about us. I miss those days (Championship).

OTHER COMMENTS :

– TWO PLAYERS ONLY EARNED THEIR APPEARANCE MONEY TODAY – GOLABART/GOMEZ

– EXTREMELY CONCERNED WHERE OUR GOALS ARE COMING FROM
= BOSSELLI – FFS …. GO
= HENRIQUEZ – NEEDS TO LEARN HOW TO TRAP A FOOTBALL FIRST

= I’D BE OUT SPLASHING THE CASH ON A STRIKER (SPECULATE TO ACCUMULATE)
TO OPTIMISE OUR CHANCES OF STICKING AROUND IN THE MONEY LEAGUE INTO
NEXT YEAR

– VERY CONCERNED RE. PL SURVIVAL – IF RECENT ANYTHING TO GO BY …

FAVOURITE AWAY DAY OUT (NOT), FULHAM, NEXT UP (MORE MISERY ??? …)

in reply to: Joel Robles #99016
We have also been linked with the Athletico Madrid keeper!

hopefully much better than the recent spanish import, who had the luxury of doing SFA down at the DW Tuesday.

apart that is from picking the ball out the net for kone’s disallowed :(

in reply to: no where near good enough #98836
I find it strange how we were on top for the first 20mins but still gave their keeper absolutely nothing to do ! I honestly cannot remember him having to make a single save during the whole game !

As for the beating clubs in the bottom half we have lost 4 won 4 and drawn 1 in the games against the current bottom half, hardly inspiring stuff ! I thought we were very bad today and the excuse of it being Utd should not be used to paper over some pretty ugly cracks that have started to appear of late !

After 25 mins, United had a decent 5 min spell which culminated in their first goal, Wigan unable to relieve the pressure (watch the re-run of the first goal – if only Kone was able to get to the ball first, but no, United that determination /experience call it what you will, first in, before you know it into Evra (ball out from under his feet) etc. etc. 1-0.

The second a comedy of errors – three Wigan players on their arse in the passage of play leading to Van Persie’s first.

The third – poor pass from McCarthy cross field, United break, free-kick (expected RVP to score), 3-0.

The forth – Christ knows what happened there.

Had Kone’s goal stood, would have made for an interesting last 30 mins.

Surprising to see the Latics 11 suddenly find an extra spring in their step just after the Kone ‘goal’. McACarthy’s poor ball leading to 3-0
scoreline put the mockers on any improbable comeback.

At least, my Utd mate had a decent day out, and Sharpy’s scampi and chips washed down with a pint of Guinness was just the job.

The rest (first 25 mins apart), absolute dross.

We didn’t half make life much easier for Utd than it ought to have been. Our own worst enemies (ring a bell ?)

in reply to: Good news #98799
Yep, very interesting read (cheers CL). Great to see that debt coming down.. or should i say tumbling down.

True legend is Mr Whelan and this statement demonstrates that Wigan Athletic will have a future long after he calls it a day

Indeed.

If SAF can have both the main stand named after himself and a statue erected outside OT (likewise a certain M Jackson down at the Cottage), then someone ought to see to it that DW has a statue erected in his LIFETIME down at the ground.

On the subject of finances, the cynic in me wonder’s whether he’d have preferred, in hindsight, to have held off on the debt /equity swap for a little longer.

On the basis we stick around in the MONEY league and with SKY pumping some serious cash / ridiculous money into the game, coupled with the club’s responsible financial management (operating costs), then he may have been in a better position to recoup part his investment, the club being profitable /cash positive and able to reduce its DW debt.

We ain’t ever going to be the hottest investment prospect (DW sell-out) due to geographic s, etc.

Hindsight, a wonderful thing !

D Whelan goodpost

in reply to: MOTD #98782

Not one mention of the two penalty appeals

We scored from the corner from the handball, so I suppose we can’t complain about that one, but the second one was as obvious as the one at Everton.
They should have both been talked about in the summing up though, but then again we are Wigan we shouldn’t expect a proper discussion.
and don’t forget yesterday’s game was over on MOTD sooner than the Villa fans were out the ground after the 3rd (56 mins)

what a feckin joke Lineker and his merry men are …

STUFFED TODAY, CHELSKI NEXT IS THE FAT LADY GETTING READY

I’m waiting for the first rant from you know who along the lines of

” I can’t be blamed for this wabbish ain’t ad any munny and the mess was ere when I come ere”

a very poor side who have given up already from what I saw today.
the very same person very bullish on BBC Sport about his team’s chances of staying up. apparently expected to lose to Pool, a ‘team worth £150M
with superstars all over the pitch (‘Gerrard, Suarez, Henderson :silly: , Downing :silly:’ etc. All mouth ?? we’ll soon find out ….

excellent result, thank you ‘Pool. Was great to watch the mighty Rangers suffer B)

in reply to: Villa #98748

– Yet another good day out at Villa Park
– Clean sheet
– Goal input from ‘non-strikers’ (Ramis, Boyce), rare commodity to date
– Kone – 2 in 2, back on the goal trail (before he’s off the ANC :( )
– As RM said, sharp at both ends today for a change
– Beat the 12th man (2 legitimate penalties)
– Out the bottom three
– Confidence booster going into the Manure game

– 10-man Potters last minute equaliser vs. Saints
– Fulham defeated by Swans

Thoroughly decent day all things considered B) B)

– All the pressure on QPR tomorrow. Come on ‘Pool :cheer:

Another Video I made Hope you enjoy!

Bobby :

Play this before the game on Tuesday and tell the lads that the ‘great Man U’ have come to town to honour ‘wee wee wee Wigan (SAF) with their presence’ and I trust we’ll give ’em a game.

Not forgetting how we scuppered their title charge last season (8 points clear of City, 7 this). Challenge the lads to go out and do the same again.

Ferguson get’s better by the day, today ‘wee club like Newcastle’
(50,000 week in, week out etc.)

Stupid TMAT.
