Hopefully he does well there and comes back a better all-round player.
He could become a decent Premier League midfielder, for me, but he’s nowhere near ready yet.
Sounds about right.
SSN haven’t mentioned us yet.
The constant questions as to why he isnt in the England squad. He told Capello to leave him out until he is fully over his back problems and having a prolonged run in the Wigan side.
Kirky is class; anybody who says otherwise is being foolish.
The point of playing Gómez is that he is to be the focal point of our attacking impetus, i.e. our play should be going through him. Now when he gets the ball, there is little point in having players who will run away from him towards the byline, whereas when they are moving infield on their preferred foot, it allows for nimble through balls and one-twos.
Also, getting balls into the box from wide would surely be folly without a player who can head the ball in there?
As for width, I imagine that the idea is that Melchiot and Figueroa supply it – which I suspect is the reason we play with two holding midfielders, so that the full-backs have more scope to get forward. It worked well against Villa, but I don’t think we’ve been able to utilise it since because we’ve been so awful.
Like I said before the season started, playing so narrowly is admirable and does provide the more ‘beautiful’ football, but unless you have an exceptional player playing where Gómez does, it falls apart quickly because opposition defences will just defend very narrowly and space in the middle will be hard to come by – which is largely what has happened so far.
He seems a bit lethargic but skillful; a’la Jordi Gómez. Whether we can afford the luxury of having two players like that in our side is debatable.
That reminds me… is McMillan our best ever left-back? :geek:Yes, absolutely. Closely followed by Alan Rodgers.
I really can’t see the hype surrounding Figueroa. He’s solid enough, but he’s not that special, and I wouldn’t value him at £5 million.
27 August 2009 at 3:15 pm in reply to: MSG for Dave & Bob – BUY A RECOGNISED PROVEN CENTRE FORWARD #6962It is starting to worry me the lack of money that we are spending. I’ve always defended the policy, in belief that you don’t have to spend loads to succeed, but when you see the strikers that other clubs are getting in and being linked with, whilst we’ve still got Marlon King and are being linked with a player who couldn’t cut it in the Championship – it is disheartening.
It’s not like we need to spend that much either; similar fees to what we paid for N’Zogbia and Heskey would be enough to bring in somebody of a proven Premiership quality.
Cue us signing Dave Nugent.
They’re paying over the odds for Huth.
If they do get Tuncay for that much then I’ll be very surprised.
Isn’t that what we have Koumas and N’zogbia for?In theory, yes. Both are hit and miss, for me, though. Maybe that’s harsh, but I think that it’s clear that we need somebody else in to provide an attacking threat and I can’t see him dropping Rodallega or Gómez.
I had my doubts when soaking wet through and three-nil down after half an hour, but it’s a long-term plan I suppose.
If we don’t spend some money on some creativity from the wing before next Monday then I’ll be nowt.
Sinclair looked quality.
Watson and Boyce were very poor.
Chimbonda and Diouf in the same team.
And Salgado is better; hopefully he keeps Pascal out of the side.
Disgusting behaviour from all concerned last night.
I fail to understand the mentality of some people.
One of us will get pneumonia tonight.
I think Melchiot played alot better with Valencia in front of him. The pair had a similar chemistry to what Neville and Beckham had at United.
N’Zogbia’s inclination to always cut in on his left leaves a fair bit of space down that side and Melchiot has looked a little out of his depth at trying to man it alone.
