I will answer your question mutty, even though you are comparing apples with eggs again

I can safely say that when tickets were affordable and Latics were top of the league ( as the rugby are now ) we regularly took 3,000 away from home. The likes of Crewe, Oldham, Huddersfield, Stockport, Port Vale etc in League 2 saw travelling supports of between 2-4,000 in our promotion season. Similarly big games in the Championship, Leeds, Leicester, Wolves, Rotherham all saw massive travelling support from Wigan.

The last time Latics probably took 3,000 away in this division was Sheffield United, a game which meant something although there were 2,500 at Bolton this season, indeed the away end looked completely full with people standing in the aisles suggesting Latics had took the full allocation available to them.

As this game was one of the few games which was a) affordable ( and this is the key to it I think you’ll find ) and b) local, more fans will travel and were financially capable of attending. Blackburn & Burnley were local too but they were charging £39 & £36 respectively ( for one ticket ) I know you don’t live in Wigan, lik a lot of rugby fans you seem to live in a middle class, more propserous area but I do live in Wigan and I can tell you that’s a fair old chunk of money for one to pay and probably an average week’s wage for a family of four so I do not blame our fans one bit for paying such extortionate prices.

So that’s your question answered mutty. Now try answering this one honestly – how many fans would Wigan Warriors take to London if they had to go there half a dozen times a season paying anything from £35 to £48 a ticket ( with no freebies for kids ) when it’s on in every pub for free and the team had been hanging about in the relegation zone all season, indeed for several years?

And how much did the extra 5000 that attended Wigan v Arsenal and Wigan v Hull pay for their tickets?

Answer is exactly the same as the Heinz/Worthington employees paid to watch Wigan v Harlequins, because the tickets were, in both cases, purchased from the respective clubs by 3rd parties and then given to whoever they chose to.

Whether someone pays the club directly for a ticket or whether a ST holder or a company pays a few quid for the seat it doesnt matter – its a bum on a seat that would have otherwise been just a seat. That bum may well buy a programme, a drink, a snack, and maybe, just maybe, a ticket for another game. No doubt the marketing dept at the latics will be hoping that some of the 5000 that took advantage of the £4 a seat for a ST holder will buy a ticket in their own right.

Whilst we are on the subject of marketing, it shows how far the town has progressed when an advert for a Wigan sporting fixture is shown on prime-time tv. The only recollection I can have of the blue marketing strategy was my late father receiving a phone call from Steve Bruce begging him to buy a ticket for the Chelsea cup game – he’d not been to a latics game since about 1980!

Mutty are you seriously trying to suggest that a promotional offer which involves individuals buying an extra ticket or two for an individual in their family or a friend at a discounted price bears any comparison to an en masse “helicopter drop” of FIVE THOUSAND TICKETS dressed up as an arms length purchase purely to ensure a sub ten thousand crowd wasn’t announced? I’m afraid you are fooling nobody but yourself.

The Arsenal & Hull promotions are no different than the promotions Wigan RL do nearly every game: season ticket exchange, the six for £30, the Big One 2 etc. Whatever Latics have done, the rugby have done it twice but they have never felt the need to give a whole stand away in a desperate bid to keep up with the neighbours

The 5,000 extra that attended the Hull & Arsenal games are no different than the extra 5,000 who will attend the forthcoming Big One ( although Latics didn’t see the need to advertise on telly to boost their crowds )

The 5,000 who attended the Harlequins game paid absolutely nothing as confirmed by one of your many rugby friends on here ;)

Oh and in terms of “begging” phone calls, I think you’ll find that Mick Hogan or Michael Maguire has been very busy with his fingers as well ringing around all the rugby fraternity both for season ticket renewals earlier on in the year and for one off games.

A quick review of your preferred board will confirm this. Well done for once again showing your hypocrisy as when Wigan Warriors do it, you all claim it’s a fantastic idea and when Latics do it it’s begging out of desperation

I would also like to point out that I hope to become a fully paid up member of the pro-Martinez brigade next season as his new signings, current squad & playing system combine to provide poetry in motion

Based on what I saw of Bobby’s tactics, substiutions, stubborn streak, comments to the press (& the Latics websites) and to some extent (some of) his signings last season, I can’t see that happening but I really hope I’m proved wrong

Do I detect a hint of positivity there Tyldesley? ;)

And in the nicest possible way I hope you are proved wrong ;)

I do agree with those who say that the better side won regardless. Both because England were overhyped, overpaid and complacent and Germany’s team probably the exact opposite ( what a player that Ozil looked, a Turkish Andy Liddell )

However that period leading up to the disallowed goal was the one time they actually fought like lions and had they continued in that same spirit they may have got summat out the game. The injustice of that disallowed goal probably took a bit of wind out of their sails and with then always chasing the game second half against a decent counter attacking German side we were always susceptible to a third. Ability-wise even with a cack defence they should have been capable of giving the Germans a game but if you turn up believing your own hype against a side who always put in a shift then there’s only one outcome

The fact that this squad of millionaires only managed to give us ten or so minutes to get genuinely excited about in 360 minutes of football is a poor show indeed from people who have no concept of how fortunate they are. It’s probably as well they got booted out as they don’t deserve the support they got out there and back home.

–“:2cy2ez21]last year the tickets were free to Heinz staff. This year I think I remember being told they were a few quid

Thanks for the straight answer, that’s all I asked for

in reply to: had it now #38711
Piching seats now eh

They have to take the seats with them to use on the way home as there aren’t usually any available on the train to Preston. It gets pretty packed because it’s where they all live

Still no answer then? In pounds and pence please Pembertonian. Question repeated below

How much did the people sat in the North Stand for the last two years’ games against Harlequins pay for their tickets?

In terms of your question of how much Heinz paid, I don’t know. No-one knows, I have previously asked you to tell me but you seem reluctant to do so because you don’t know. all you can offer is some club flannel about marketing deals. Your attempts to liken someone buying a handful of tickets for their family to a company “apparently” buying 5,000 tickets to give away free are laughable. To all intents and purposes if it looks like bulls**t and it smells like bulls**t then we can only conclude that it is bulls**t

    8-)

No tickets were given away. Of course, if you can prove otherwise and back up your claim then I’ll gladly admit I’m wrong.

I’ve proved it so admit you’re wrong. Failing that please just answer the following question, preferably in pounds and pence. It’s not a difficult one:

How much did the people sat in the North Stand for the last two years’ games against Harlequins pay for their tickets?

in reply to: had it now #38592

The tickets were given away. Most of my family got them free. This is a fact. After proving this to you ( unless you are calling me a liar ) you now seem a little shy of admitting that you are wrong even though I have proved me wrong.

You have also changed your argument to add the words not given away ‘by Wigan’ on the end

Heinz bought a sponsorship deal. Three months into the season the rugby club decided to give them 5,000 tickets as part of that deal. No price was ever given for these tickets. Find me one and might be able to dig yourself out of this embarassing hole you have climbed into.

No other deal has been offered to any sponsor at any other game on such a grand scale and after initially announcing that the club were giving the tickets to Heinz they were subsequently at great pains to point out that they had been bought as part of a deal. They were then given away. Does this not strike you as odd?

Whom do you think instigated this deal with no price? Do you believe Heinz rang up and said we’ll buy 5,000 for your worst attended game of the season or do you think that someone from Wigan Warriors rang up Heinz and said ‘We need to fill 5,000 seats, why don’t we just give you a load of tickets to give out free as a one off and we call it part of the sponsorship deal. Try and answer this honestly.

Why are you so defensive Pembertonian? What name do you post under on RLfans? You are as transparent as your beloved rugby club’s attempts to claim they are selling tickets they have given away with your ultra defensive nature concerning the rugby club.

Just like your silly little friend who did a runner last week, you seem well versed in RL matters but post not a single thing about Latics and the club’s history. You’re a rugby snide and fooling no-one

Put up or shut up. Show us all the price of these tickets or lose your credibility

Try and give us a fact as you seem fond of them rather than the spin your club has put on it

in reply to: had it now #38569
No tickets were given away. Of course, if you can prove otherwise and back up your claim then I’ll gladly admit I’m wrong.

My brother works at Heinz and I can confirm that he and his family were all given free tickets to attend the Harlequins game. Indeed he confirmed that the whole of Heinz had free tickets given away to them.

    Hope that helps

in reply to: had it now #38565
You mean a couple of sponsors paid a nominal fee to sponsor the St Georges Day game and in return were allocated a few 1000 tickets apiece so technically they were purchased?

Or the thousands of tickets given away to players and their families for the Community Day and the sports clubs given tickets for the Leeds game?

After a couple of early season 12k crowds the club took it upon themselves to boost attendances and I’ve always given them credit for that but jumping through hoops to claim these are not giveaways isn’t fooling anyone.

The club know with so few fixtures they only need put a huge effort into 2 or 3 games and this will see the average jump from 12k-13k to 15k-16k.

    It’s a clever marketing tactic.

Expect a one line reply from our rugby friend in a minute which attempts to dismiss your argument without giving any relevant reasoning as to why

Almost! You started off like an intelligent adult but slid into strange and slow child. Keep trying.

Aw diddums. You disagreed with what I said and resorted to calling me a child. Now THAT is childish

I just did. Would you like to tell us all why it offends you?

in reply to: had it now #38544

A very good idea, let’s make no mistake about it the rugby are leagues ahead of Latics when it comes to advertising and marketing. Hopefully the new chief exec will sort it out.

I don’t blame other contributors on this thread for being cynical about it though because I’m sure if Latics had done this instead of the rugby, the rugby fans would be slagging off Latics saying it smacks of desperation.

Just like when Latics do ticket promotions yet when the rugby give away an entire stand it’s fantastic marketing

Can’t knock the rugby club for doing it though, it will “expose the brand” to yet more out of town fans. Maybe their entire support will come from Preston in a few years and then Maurice will move them in

Maybe football could follow rugby league’s example and play a match against France at Leigh Sports Village in front of barely 8000 people
