I have to admit that I couldn’t help but laugh at the section in the original post which praised Bobby for getting rid of the “deadwood” & then swfitly followed it by criticism of 4 specific players – 3 of whom were signed by Bobby & were drafted in to become replacements for this deadwood!!!
I take your point, but as we are not a club rolling in money, we are always going to have to take risks with unproven players. We can’t afford to sign Champions League standard players. We have to take a chance of players who we think can make the step up.
Gomez couldn’t really hack it in La Liga but was a star in the Championship. He has shown he’s not quick enough for the pace of the Premier League, but if he had adapted he could have been a good player.
Gary Caldwell was Celtic’s captain, but again he was a gamble as he was coming from a poorer standard of football in my opinion and his lack of pace has again found him out. His brother Stephen was a desperation free signing to beef up the squad.
And who was the other player? Figueroa? He hasn’t been the same player since Bruce left because he isn’t comfortable on the ball.
I think considering the turnover of players we have had and the fact that generally we have to build a new team every couple of years, two or three dud signings isn’t too bad. Look at the poor signings Wenger and Fergie have made recently.
In my opinion we do have good players, but we are missing that spark to bring it all together.
I mentioned earlier on in this thread about a Gomez replacement, someone to sit in the hole, be creative and score a few goals – with a bit more pace than Gomez.
I see this morning we are being heavily linked with Javi Marquez from Espanyol and he is the type of player I am talking about
One thing I do agree on is that we have some good players but that’s no good if the manager wont pick a system they can play. He has had 18 month’s and not changed tactic’s once so the tinkering your after wont happen. He is either to stupid or to pig headed. The other thing about loyalty don’t be fooled he would go to the highest bidder ask Swansea fan’s how loyal he is.
I agree he is maybe a bit too stubborn for his own good, but you can’t expect him to come into the best league in the world and completely change the way we play in 18 months and have us comfortably in midtable. It will take time – probably years to get it right.
I’ve read a couple of posts about the youth team being impressive and the fact they are playing the same style of football as the first team. What Bob is trying to do is change the footballing culture of the club from top to bottom. It is no different to what Spain started 20 years ago and look at them now or the blueprint that Klinnsman started with Germany which started to bring dividends at this summer’s World Cup.
The difference is, Bob is trying to do it with a poorly supported Premier League club who cannot compete with the big clubs in the division. So he is having to pick up young players or unknowns from other leagues in the hope they fit in with his footballing philosophies.
It may well be the case that we bring players in who cannot operate or adapt to our system. And if that is the case we need to keep trying so that we keep finding little gems who do, which I guess is what Bob refers to when he talks about needing a few transfer windows to get the team how he wants it.
The way I look at we can only improve. We have to, because if we don’t, we’re doooooon.I didn’t realise you were a Geordie Griff.
Well Paul Merson has tipped us to go down so we might as well all just give up. We all know what an ace tipster he is and how successful he was at gambling
Paul Daglish eh, if only he had been as good as his dad. I suppose he wouldn’t have ended up playing for us he had been  He scored in that 6-1 massacre of Sjoke a few years ago :D
One of my funniest Latics memories on an otherwise gutting evening, was when Scott Green got confronted by that fan on the pitch at Reading when we lost the play-off semi-final.
I also seem to recall Steve Bruce almost having a scrap with Martin Allen on the touchline during the same game. I mentioned that to ‘Mad Dog’ Martin Allen when I was a reporter covering Barnet and he was their manager. “Mad dog” is indeed an appropriate nickname for him.
But I liked Scott Green. He looked menacing especially as he had no teeth and a badly heed! If only we had a couple of “Premiership class” Scott Greens in our team now. We could do with a bit of no nonsense tackling tomorrow against Sjoke.
I’m all for a CL list of player opinions, maybe we could have a laminated card to take to the game in case of confusion.I think Di Santo has played ok in the games I saw him in, maybe I havent been to that many.
I can handle you having a go at Thomas, but not Figgy. Where, sorry WHERE did that come from !
I have to disagree. Thomas has been one of our better players this season, but I get very nervous when watching Figgy. In fact he looks very nervous when I see him play.
As i said i truly believe martinez is being used as a pawn in whelans master plan”
Loudmouth, what are you going on about? So you think Dave Whelan wants out so badly that he appointed a manager who he thought would take us down so that he could then get rid of the club?
Why would Whelan who has spent his hard earned money on our club and invested years in getting us to where we are want to get rid of the club in such a fashion and then, to top it all off, make sure he loses loads of money into the bargain.
If he wants out, he will sell the club when it is most valuable which is not in the fizzy pop league.
Whelan is sentimental as he showed by taking his hometown club into the Premiership in true Roy of the Rovers fashion. However he is also a businessman and has made sure we have balanced the books by selling players over the last two or three years.
He won’t sell the club for a pittence, he’ll look to get as much as he can for it.
Very slow. Reminds me a bit of both Caldwells if I’m honest. Put him in a race with a pacey forward and it looks like he’s treading water
All quiet on the Piscu saga. I would suggest that we will sign him in January and come to agree a compromise on the compensation fee with Depor. It sounds like far too complicated a deal to me.
But I’m sure I can find one more dodgy translation before this saga is concluded
I’ll keep you posted ;)
Putting a run together? I’d settle for a win on Saturday to start with and I don’t care how we do it.
I would however prefer it if Roberto got his players playing “sin miedo” for a change!
Gomez is good at winning free kicks, pity no one can take them !It sounded like Watson was woeful again last night when it came to corner and free kicks.
It’s a shame because with our lack of cutting edge, we should be trying to make the most of our dead ball situations
Griff, how many games are you going to give Roberto before you return to your views of earlier in the season?
I want Roberto to do well but following our meagre goals ratio and our “tame” displays I’m starting to feel like I did when Hutchings was in charge. Like I’m watching a sinking ship :o
He was probably just trying to be niceLike Arsene Wenger was before last night’s game when he described us as a tough test
I think that is a good shout as I was thinking something similar.
However, then I remembered what his nickname was in his playing days – “the crab”.
His sideways passing background should fit in with our style of play perfectly
i think your wrong on this one swindon -wilkins sideways passing would be a vast improvement – on the backwards stuff we witness now.[/quote]
Quite
